Wijnen

72% Merlot en 28% Cabernet Franc. Het rendement is relatief laag met 36 hl/ha. Elevage gedurende 18 maand in 70% nieuwe eik. De kleur is licht robijnrood. De neus vertoont heerlijke florale accenten en tonaliteiten van rijpe kersjes. De smaakervaring is precies en zuiver, de textuur succulent en het evenwicht indrukwekkend. Het rood fruit proeft heerlijk en de tannine is zijdezacht. Het geheel is fris, gelaagd en perfect omlijnd. Fluwelen afdronk met rode kersjes, pruimpjes en zoete vanilla. Kortom: Canon 2014 straalt elegantie uit van begin tot eind en is daarmee de epitomie van grote Saint Emilion. Deze onweerstaanbare wijn is ongetwijfeld één van de wijnen van het jaar. Canon  krijgt dan ook veel lof in de pers: The Wine Advocate scoort hem hoger dan Angélus en evenhoog als Ausone, ook al is hun prijs een veelvoud van die van Canon. “Super-classy” wijn en een must in onze selectie.

The 2014 Canon has an intense bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, briary and light tobacco scents, gradually gaining more precision with aeration yet remaining classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and poised with a structured yet precise finish that is pure class. Perhaps you might argue that it lacks some charm at this early stage but at the same time, I am fascinated to see how it will age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drink 2022-2050.

The 2014 Canon has a very well-defined, precise bouquet with ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry scents infused with minerals. The aromatics here are utterly captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and very well-judged acidity. There is tension and poise to this Saint Emilion, gently fanning out with a delicate spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth. Though surely destined to be over-shadowed by the extraordinary 2015, this Canon deserves a berth in your cellar. Drink: 2020 – 2050.

The Château Canon 2014 is a blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the estate moving towards the latter in terms of its new plantings, which will possibly see 40% in 15 or 20 years time. It was picked from 22 September until 6 October for the Merlot and three days later for the Cabernet Franc, matured in around 80% new oak. It has a glorious bouquet with great purity and delineation: raspberry, wild strawberry and small red cherries, very pure and harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with sensual ripe, filigree tannin, just the right amount of salinity, precise and mineral-rich towards the exquisite, pure and “classic” finish. This is outstanding for the vintage – a sublime Château Canon that might dare rank alongside the 2009 and 2010. If this represents the valedictory Canon from John Kolasa, then what a way to bow out. Drink: 2018 – 2038.

Mid to deep crimson. Full, opulent nose. Sweet start and then a little pinched on the end - there isn't the broad sweep of fruit on the palate that was suggested by the nose. Correct but very introvert. One of the more youthful St-Émilions. Drink 2024-2032.

The 2014 Canon is delicate, polished and restrained, with striking aromatic presence, silky tannins and exceptional length, all of which reinforce an impression of total finesse. Not an obvious wine, the 2014 will need time to fully come together and perhaps flesh out a little more. Even so, it is quite pretty and expressive in the early going. This is the last vintage overseen by John Kolasa, who, among other things, laid a foundation at Canon that sets the property up brilliantly for the future. Tasted three times.

Canon

Canon is een Saint Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé die zijn sporen verdiende in een ver verleden. De aankomst in 1996 van de broers Wertheimer werd een kantelmoment. De eigenaars van Chanel pasten Haute Couture toe: vandaag is een typische Canon extreem elegant, fijn en complex. De wijngaard werd gaandeweg uitgebreid van 20,5 tot 34 hectare (31 in productie), na de aankoop van Curé Bon la Madeleine (plateau, argilo-calcaire) en Matras (de zuid-zuidwestelijke helling en pied de côte ten Zuiden). John Kolasa en nu Nicolas Audebert zetten orde op zaken. Twintig jaar “volstond” om Canon er weer helemaal te doen “staan”. Canon is vandaag the talk of town (in Bordeaux en tot ver daarbuiten) zeker sinds de legendarische 2015, 2016 en 2018. Er werd 70% Merlot en 30% Cabernet Franc aangeplant op een densiteit tussen 6.500 en 7.200 wijnstokken per hectare. De gemiddelde leeftijd van de wijngaard was 30 jaar in 2018. De bodem bestaat uit kalk onder een dunne laag klei op het plateau en zandering klei op de helling.

Kolasa

De Schot John Kolasa is directeur van Rauzan Ségla sinds 1994 en van Canon sinds 1996. Rauzan Ségla is een Margaux Deuxième Grand Cru Classé 1855 en Canon is Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion. Voordien bestuurde hij Château Latour. Hij is bovendien één van de meest directe bordelezen in de omgang; stel hem een duidelijke vraag en je krijgt een duidelijk antwoord. Volgens hem is elk millésime als een geboorte; hij is altijd ongerust! Hij doet het vandaag rustiger aan, en wordt opgevolgd door Nicolas Audebert (ex Cheval des Andes).
