The 2014 Haut-Bailly has a sophisticated bouquet with cedar and gravel-infused red berry fruit, gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannins that manage to form a firm frame that should see this repay cellaring. There is plenty of attractive, lightly spice red and black fruit, segueing into clove and black olive notes towards the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drink 2021-2045.

The 2014 Haut Bailly has a charming, quite intense bouquet with layers of blackberry, raspberry coulis, black olive and melted tar scents that soar from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, harmonious and focused with superb density and precision towards the finish. This is a classy number and alongside Domaine de Chevalier, it is one of the standouts from the appellation in this vintage. Drink 2020-2045.

The Château Haut-Bailly 2014 is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Merlot picked between 24 September and 15 October. Véronique Sanders explained that it represents a much higher percentage of Cabernet because of its quality, the Merlot undergoing some saignée due to the size of berries. Matured in 50% new oak and including 8% vin de presse, it has a lovely bouquet with superb delineation, touches of undergrowth and tobacco infusing the pure black fruit, stirrings of black tea emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy, crisp tannin on the entry and good acidity (ph 3.7), perhaps more than say, the 2012. There is a fine sense of energy here and at dovetails into a lightly spiced, slightly saline finish. This is a slightly less ostentatious than recent vintages, a little more restrained but the terroir really shows through. Excellent. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score.

Ample and resonant on the palate, with striking depth, the 2014 possesses exceptional balance and class. Hints of smoke, tobacco and licorice infuse the deep, creamy finish. Drinking window: 2020 - 2039

95 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (Februari 2017) - A very well-made, modern wine with ripe cherry and cassis notes but rather discrete oak. The bright fruit and lively acidity balance the moderately dry tannins very well, and the finish is long and quite complex. Compacted. Needs time to open. Beautiful.

Loads of tobacco and tar details join in on the finish, while the fruit easily keeps pace. Rock-solid. Best from 2020 through 2035. 6,665 cases made.

Ici, les cabernets sauvignons trament le millésime avec des tanins particulièrement élégants. Il est finement fumé sur des notes de tabac blond, signe d'une prise de bois très juste. C'est la délicatesse mélée à la puissance d'une année que Haut-Bailly a maîtrisée savamment.

Haut Bailly

Haut Bailly is een “essentiële” Pessac Léognan. Zijn wijnen markeren de proever volgens “l’esthétique à la française” die door dichter André Gide beschreven wordt als “rien de trop”. Omwille van dit classicisme herinnert Haut Bailly meer aan Haut Brion of La Mission dan aan Pape Clément of Smith Haut Lafitte. De wijngaard is een homogeen geheel van 30 hectare te Léognan, tien kilometer ten Zuiden van Bordeaux. Hij is beplant met 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot en 6% Cabernet Franc. Jaarlijks worden er zo’n 160.000 flessen geproduceerd.

Voorgaande eigenaars waren Firmin le Bailly, Laurent de Lafaurie, baron de Monbadon, Alcide Bellot des Minières en Jean Sanders. Haut Bailly was Belgisch tussen 1955 en 1998. Sindsdien behoort het toe aan Robert G. Wilmers die de M&T Bank dirigeert in Buffalo, New York. Zijn echtgenote Elisabeth is een française.

In de recentere wijnjaren 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 en 2010, herkennen we de gebruikelijke elegantie, finesse en aromatische complexiteit maar het gebalder en intenser karakter is nieuw. We danken deze “tour de force” aan een meer beheerst rendement en het plukken op optimale rijpheid. Reeds sinds 1967 is er een tweede wijn, la Parde de Haut Bailly, en sinds 1987 zelfs een derde, een generieke Pessac Léognan. Die strengere selectie maakt van La Parde een even elegante en complexe wijn als de Haut Bailly van twintig jaar terug.

Sanders

Robert G. Wilmers bracht de kwaliteitswijnen van Haut Bailly op een hoger echelon. Véronique Sanders van Beek, de kleindochter van de vorige eigenaar, is hier in grote mate voor verantwoordelijk samen met de getalenteerde Gabriël Vialard.
