60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc en 6% Petit Verdot. Elevage in 45% nieuwe eik. Diep purper getint robijnrood. De directe neus is "in your face" als ik het zo mag zeggen, met mooi rood fruit (kersjes). Ceder, potlood, kruiden, peper, braambes en rood fruit volgen elkaar ritmisch op in vitaal geheel dat binnen de lijntjes wordt gehouden door ragfijne zuren. Gloria 2014 is een heerlijke, evenwichtige Saint Julien met structuur en een gulle persoonlijkheid. Dit wordt een prachtfles en... de prijs zit nog goed ook! Een grote aanrader dus.

The 2014 Gloria has a ripe and voluminous bouquet with plenty of blackberry, raspberry, pencil box and cedar aromas all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite focused and poised with very well integrated new oak. There is plenty of freshness here, a 2014 Saint Julien full of energy with a persistent graphite finish that is very satisfying. Like its sibling, the Saint-Pierre, there is great potential here. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drink 2022-2040.

The 2014 Gloria has a powerful bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry and cedar—forthright and demonstrative. The palate is structured and quite masculine, a light marine influence filtering through, but just missing a little complexity on the second half, where I would like to see more Cabernet expression. Perhaps this is one Saint Julien where I expected more. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Drink: 2018 – 2029.

The Château Gloria 2014 has a focused, straight-laced bouquet with strict redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit, tightly wound at first but opening with aeration, tobacco and even flint emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, dry tannin, a little chalkiness under those broody black fruit, the foundation of a classic, almost austere finish the nevertheless offers length and sustain. This actually harks back to the fine old Gloria's of the past, a little rustic perhaps, but a wine that I think will blossom in bottle. This will need to prove itself in bottle. Drink: 2019 – 2038.

The 2014 Gloria is a bold, powerful wine. Dark cherry, smoke, licorice, tobacco and underbrush effortlessly fill out its frame. Ample and richly textured, the 2014 offers remarkable depth, power and pure pedigree. Pomegranate, blood orange and iron add further complexity on the finish. This is a superb showing. Tasted two times. Drink 2024-2044.

The 2014 Gloria is ample, rich and beautifully resonant, with more than enough fruit to fill out its broad-shouldered frame. Red currant, blood orange, smoke, white pepper and iron build to the deeply satisfying finish. The combination of extroverted fruit, tannin and saline-inflected minerality dazzles from the very first taste. What a gorgeous wine this is.

Unclassified it may be, but Jean-Louis Triaud's property often produces some of the most profound and well-priced Saint Juliens. That's the case in 2014 on this inky hued, textured, graphite- and cedarwood-scented blend. The tannins are typically supple and well defined, folded into the texture of the wine.

Bright crimson. Refined salty-savoury nose. Aromatic and sweetly fresh. Racy and lightly grainy. Lots of freshness but no excess acidity. Light tannic charge on the end with a rich peacock's tail finish. Full of charm. Real drive to this wine. Drink 2020-2032.

Gloria

Gloria legt telkens de lat hoger. Vooral in de grote recente wijnjaren zoals 2009 en 2010, 2016 en 2018 komt Gloria op bijzonder imposante manier uit de hoek. Gloria werd niet geklasseerd in 1855 (en is ook geen Cru Bourgeois) daar het nog maar sinds 1942 bestaat onder impuls van Henri Martin. Hij was burgemeester van Saint Julien, tonnerlier en ooit régisseur van Latour. Hij bracht verschillende percelen samen in een entiteit van 44ha door ze aan te kopen van naburige Crus Classés zoals Gruaud Larose, Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton, Lagrange en Ducru Beaucaillou. Besluit: Gloria staat jaarlijks op het niveau van een Grand Cru Classé maar blijft blinken aan een vriendenprijs!... De (ondertussen) 50 hectare werden beplant tegen 10.000 wijnstokken per hectare op Graves gunziennes bovenop keien en zanderige klei. We vinden er 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 5% Petit Verdot. Gloria de meest aantrekkelijk geprijsde, grote Saint Julien met ampleur, richesse et vivacité.

Aujourd’hui, d’une superficie de 44 hectares, le vignoble du Château Gloria se répartit sur trois zones, au centre de Beychevelle, à l’ouest et au nord de l’appellation, à la limite de l’aire d’appellation Pauillac. Sur des terroirs de graves günziennes, parmi les meilleurs de l’appellation, au sous-sol de graves argilo-sabloneuses, l’encépagement est très classique avec 65 % de cabernet sauvignon, 25 % de merlot, 5 % de cabernet franc et 5 % de petit verdot. Gloria a d’ailleurs été l’un des premiers à croire au petit verdot, un très bon cépage probablement cultivé dans le Médoc longtemps avant le cabernet sauvignon. Il apporte aux assemblages sa couleur ainsi qu’un supplément de richesse aromatique, tannique et alcoolique. Avec des pieds de vigne âgés de 80 ans et d’autres de 30 ans, l’âge moyen de la vigne se situe autour de 45 ans. Sa situation est remarquable et soigneusement entretenue. Le vignoble est taillé en guyot double. Son rendement à l’hectare affiche une moyenne de 45 hectolitres pour une densité de plantation de 10 000 pieds à l’hectare.

Vandaag staan Françoise en Jean Louis Triaud en hun kinderen Vanessa en Jean aan het hoofd van Gloria en Saint Pierre. Als schoonzoon van Henri Martin, is Jean-Louis Triaud verantwoordelijk voor deze vermaarde Saint Juliens, maar was eerder ook betrokken (in betere tijden) bij de voetballers van “les Girondins de Bordeaux”! Ze zijn sportief...
