Capbern 2016 is een duivels sexy plezierwijn met aplomb. Het wonderteam dat Calon Ségur de laatste jaren sublimeerde doet ook hier wonderen. Capbern is intens vanaf de eerste oogopslag met die diepdonkere kleur dat het glas tooit. We herkennen ceder en fris zwart fruit in de neus. In de mond is dit classic Saint Estèphe met toetsen van cassis, cacao, peper en wierook. Magische tannine, exuberant fruit, luxueuze volmondigheid en precieze rijpheid sont au rendez-vous. Het geheel blijft aanhouden tot in de verleidelijke finale. Capbern is ongetwijfeld één van de plezierigste wijnen van het jaar: een échte Médocain met allure. Oh ja, en Capbern is nog betaalbaar ook!
Na de regen tijdens het voorjaar, volgde een uiterst droge periode die wat stress veroorzaakte op het moment van de véraison. Dit is niet ongebruikelijk (en zelfs wenselijk) in grote wijnjaren. De grote temperatuurschommelingen tussen dag en nacht zorgden voor een trage evolutie naar de maturiteit en tegelijk het behoud van frisheid. De 30mm regen van half september vervolmaakte het rijpingsproces: suikergehalte, zuren, fenolische en aromatische rijpheid piekten tegelijk op het precieze moment van de oogst, met dit wonder als resultaat. Het rendement bedroeg 42hl/ha. Nog een weetje : Capbern werd twee dagen later geplukt dan Calon Ségur in 2016.
De wijngaard bestaat uit één enkele entiteit van 38 hectare op kalk- en kleibodems gelegen tussen Meyney en Phélan Ségur. Het werd beplant met 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot en 2% Petit Verdot.

The 2016 Capbern from the Calon-Ségur team, matured in 50-60% new oak, has a wonderful bouquet of blackberry, pencil lead and light floral aromas that leap out of the glass. The beautifully balanced palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, leading to a supple, smooth but complex graphite finish. This is a superb Capbern, easily the best ever made. Drink 2021-2040.

The 2016 Capbern (the erstwhile "Château Capbern-Gasqueton") is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, delivering around 14% alcohol with a total acidity of 3.5 grams per liter. It was cropped at 42 hectoliters per hectare and is being matured in 60% new French oak. It has a clean and precise bouquet with blackberry, mint and just a hint of boot polish. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin; this is a typical Saint-Estèphe in terms of a bold, almost Montrose-like tannic structure, gently grippy with more than enough freshness on the pert finish. There is a lovely touch of cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Give this three or four years in bottle as this is a fine Château Capbern. Drink: 2021-2040.

The 2016 Capbern is racy, bold and savory, with tons of energy from the Cabernet that drives the blend. Crushed rose petal, mint, dried herbs, licorice and lavender are some of the many notes that open up in the glass. Medium in body and gracious, this deceptively mid-weight Saint-Estèphe has a lot to offer. Time in barrel seems to have given the 2016 a bit more spine and tannic edge, which adds to an impression of freshness. What a gorgeous wine it is. Tasted three times. Drink 2021-2036.

One of the sleepers of the vintage, the 2016 Capbern is a gorgeous wine. Plump, juicy and expressive, with good aromatic nuance throughout, the Capbern is once again terrific. Sweet tobacco, grilled herbs, licorice and succulent red cherry infuse this racy, exquisitely beautiful Saint-Estèphe. The Cabernet Sauvignon is quite expressive today, while soft contours and silky tannins add to the wine's considerable appeal. The 2016 is without question the most complete of the mid-tier Saint-Estèphes. Don't miss it. Tasted three times.

This shows a great combination of deep, intense cassis and loganberry fruits and chalky, almost chewy, tannins. There is a slow creep of power, but with a sense of lightness in the touch. This is a reliable property, known as Capbern Gasqueton until 2013, that has delivered another hugely drinkable vintage - the IPT of 78 is similar to the 2014. The blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2%Petit Verdot spends 18 months in 60% new oak. 3.7pH. Drink: 2024-2038.

A little more angular than the famous 2009 but very easy to drink. Tannins quite marked at the moment. Very round tannins but they are there in such profusion that you will have to wait... GV. Drink: 2024-2032.

Calon SégurCalon Ségur is de meest Noordelijk gelegen Grand Cru Classé van de Médoc en één van de mooiste terroirs van Bordeaux. De wijngaard omvat 50 hectare uit één stuk, ten noordwesten van het gehucht Saint Estèphe. Er is een bovenlaag van Graves argilo-sableuses, die werd gedeponeerd door de Gironde, en een kleihoudende onderlaag. 45 hectare zijn beplant met 56% Cabernet Sauvignon 35% Merlot, aangevuld met Cabernet Franc en Petit Verdot. De Cabernet Sauvignon gedijt er prima en omvat dan ook doorgaans ¾ van het assemblage. Densiteit van aanplanting is voor hen primordiaal en ze mikken op 8.000 wijnstokken per hectare. De gemiddelde leeftijd van de wijngaard is slechts 22 jaar in 2017.
We kijken uit op de zilte monding van de Gironde… De ommuurde wijngaard is van gallo-romeinse oorsprong en één van de oudste van de Médoc. In de XVIII° siècle, was le Marquis de Ségur, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur (1697-1755), bijgenaamd "le Prince des Vignes", eigenaar van zowel Calon als Latour et Lafite. Ter herinnering aan zijn spreuk « Je fais du vin à Latour et Lafite mais mon cœur est à Calon » prijkt een hart op het wereldwijd herkend etiket van Calon Ségur. In 1855 werd Calon Ségur geklasseerd als Troisième Grand Cru Classé. In navolging van Hélène de Baritault de Carpia en de familie Capbern Gasqueton die er een eeuw lang de scepter zwaaide, is Suravenir Assurances, een filiaal van de verzekeringsgroep Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, vandaag de meerderheidsaandeelhouder naast de eigenaar van Petrus. Zij lanceerden sinds 2013 een grootschalige renovatie onder leiding van Laurent Dufau terwijl Vincent Millet, een “ancien” van Château Margaux, instaat voor de vinificatie, het vernieuwen van de wijngaard en het uitdrukken van dit historisch terroir. De bouwwerken in de cuvier werden afgewerkt in 2016 en in 2019 werd zelfs de gehele decoratie onder handen genomen. Calon Ségur bereikt vandaag het hoogtepunt van zijn kunnen.
