Wijnen

Sinds zijn eerste millésime 2009 wint Montlandrie gestaag aan complexiteit. Denis Durantou vertelde ons dat nu ook 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (aangeplant in 2009) opgenomen wordt, naast 75% Merlot en 20% Cabernet Franc. Voor de 2016 worden er 3.400 kisten geproduceerd die voorlopig hun élevage genieten in 60% nieuwe eik. Het wordt neuskrullen met die pruimpjes en zwarte kersen en een hint naar cacao. De tong zal extatisch zijn met die zachte, ronde tannine, het sappig rood en zwart fruit, chocolade en vanille. U leest het goed: Montlandrie 2016 is een fantastische wijn en opnieuw één van de grootste buitenkansjes van het jaar! Ten zeerste aanbevolen.

Hoort u het liever van een ander? Neal Martin vindt het “superb”, Galloni “ready to deliver maximum pleasure on release” en Jancis Robinson scoort 17/20, evenveel als Pavie, en een half punt minder dan het grote Eglise Clinet zelf. Als dit niet opmerkelijk is!

The 2016 Montlandrie is the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux from Denis Durantou. On the nose, it is the ripest of Durantou’s six offerings, offering mulberry, Dorset plum and hints of fresh fig, and more open than either La Chenade or Les Cruzelles, his two Lalande de Pomerols. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip on the entry. There is good volume and depth to this wine. The red fruit merges with more black fruit toward the finish, where hints of tobacco and cedar lend a slightly Left Bank feel. Very impressive. Drink 2021-2036.

The 2016 Montlandrie is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 3-17 October. It was picked at 40 hectoliters per hectare and raised in 60% new oak (although my sample was from a one-year-old barrel). It is the first vintage to include more than 80% of the vines that were planted by Denis Durantou after 2008. This has a more broody bouquet than the two Lalande-de-Pomerols, just a touch of leafiness originating from the Cabernet Sauvignon that enhances the complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure, more saline than the Les Cruzelles, backward at the moment, but the Cabernets impart some lovely graphite notes on the saline finish. Superb. Expect this to land towards the top of my banded score once in bottle. Drink: 2021-2036.

The 2016 Montlandrie is laced with the essence of inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice. Pliant and fruity, with striking depth, the 2016 is another gorgeous wine in this set of new releases from Denis Durantou. The 2016 is irresistibly beautiful, exotic and beguiling. It's as simple as that. Drink 2021-2031.

Although it has the same qualitative style as Les Cruzelles or La Chenade, the 2016 Montlandrie, offers aromas of flowers, plum, graphite and menthol, as well as a more chalky texture. It’s pure, clean, long and fleshy with powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. There’s no reason to wait. Drink 2023-2028.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Montlandrie opens with pretty rose hip, lavender and cinnamon stick notes over a core of baked plums and spice cake plus a touch of tilled soil. Medium-bodied, it has a chewy texture and oodles of freshness framing the youthful spiced plums flavors, finishing on a lingering savory note. Drink 2019-2031.

The classic Durantou Castillon. The aromatics are jumping right out of the glass, and gentle cappuccino curls round out the tight blackberry fruits. I love it, it's so elegant yet full of flavour. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon yielding 40hl/ha from 9ha, picked between 3rd and 17th October. Aged in 60% new oak. Drink: 2023-2038.

They bought the first bit of this property in 2008, then another bit in 2009. Same geological profile as Pavie and Tertre Roteboeuf. Now for the first time from the Église-Clinet vines that Durantou planted in 2009 and 2011. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Picked 3-17 October. 60% new oak. 3,400 cases. 15 ha of vines and the rest will be truffle oaks. Very deep crimson. Intense nose. Sweet start and very dramatic. This should be worth looking out for over the next few vintages. Real improvement this year! Drink: 2021-2029.

Fresh and engaging, with lovely raspberry and plum fruit, backed by a pronounced minerally edge. Shows a slightly firm spine through the spice-tinged finish.

Generally the most tannic of Denis Duranotu’s impressive range, this is the one where he says “thanks” to Cabernet Sauvignon for providing extra backbone and tannin. Dark fruits, some orange zest and considerable underlying structure make this a wine that will reward patience. 2025-32.

Dark ruby in color, with fresh herbs, dark cherry and floral notes in the perfume. Black cherry liqueur, licorice, tobacco and spice sensations work well with the ripe, elegant stylings found here. Freshness paired with dark chocolate, rich textures, ripe tannins and the structure to age. The wine is a blend of 75% Merlot , 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon , the wine reached 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.56.

Montlandrie

Denis Durantou kocht Montlandrie in maart 2009 omwille van de geologische gelijkenissen met Pavie en Tertre Roteboeuf. De combinatie van terroir, precieze vinificatie en een onberispelijk élevage resulteert in een overheerlijke prachtwijn. Deze 11 hectare in Castillon is beplant met 25 jaar oude Merlot en Cabernet Franc (2/3 + 1/3). Sinds 2016 wordt hieraan 5% Cabernet Sauvignon toegevoegd (aangeplant bij de aankoop).

Durantou is without doubt one of France's most talented winemakers, and Montlandrie has been owned by him since 2009... and this is one of the leading lights ... An accomplished, succulent wine.
