Nieuwe eigenaars, een nieuw team en nieuwe installaties brachten méér selectie op het wonderlijk terroir van Montrose “het Latour van Saint Estèphe”. 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc en bijzonder véél, 11%, Petit Verdot in 2016. Het assemblage verschilt dus in grote mate van dit van de Grand Vin. Er is heel wat meer tweede wijn dan Grand Vin voor handen, maar laat dit geen euvel zijn: de kruidige en rokerige neus smeekt om een wals en vertoont dan prompt het fruit van pruimpjes en kersen in een minerale en frisse stijl. Deze typische Saint Estèphe is volmondig en rond op de tong met zijn heerlijke en klassevolle tannine en succulente fruittoetsen die herinneren aan knapperige cassis, peper en kersjes. Zo wordt de neus perfect verdergezet op de tong. Er is niet alleen precisie maar ook zoveel overheerlijke fraîcheur en lengte. La Dame de Montrose is een juist, klinkend voorbeeld van het succes van 2016: “C’est bon!” De fraîcheur is hemels, de alcohol onvoelbaar, de tannine overheerlijk en het geheel houdt aan tot in een lange finale. Vrij zuiver, gepolijst en volmaakt in een austère stijl. Een ware Médocain dus. Uiteindelijk “wint” dit stralend fruit, dat noch te koel of te solaire overkomt. Ten zeerste aanbevolen.

The 2016 La Dame de Montrose has a lovely bouquet of blackberry, tobacco, light black truffle notes and a touch of smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, quite sturdy for a second wine, and lightly spiced with a sprinkling of white pepper on the surprisingly persistent finish. Excellent. Drink 2022-2036.

The 2016 La Dame de Montrose is a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot. It is often a difficult Deuxième Vin to taste en primeur, and it often meliorates considerably during its élevage. Here, the aromatics took some time to coalesce in the glass: blackberry, graphite and a noticeable oyster shell aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, grainy in texture with very fine balance towards the finish where the quality of the vintage showed through. Doubtless those aromatics will improve and gain harmony by the time it is in bottle, and indeed, when I returned for a second visit I discerned a little more finesse and prettiness on the finish. This is a delightful La Dame. Tasted twice. Drink: 2021-2035.

A gorgeous second wine, the 2016 La Dame de Montrose is incredibly expressive today. Supple, radiant and inviting, La Dame has all the potential to be an overachiever in this vintage. Today, it is quite open, and, even more importantly, flat-out delicious. In some moments, La Dame is rather nuanced, while at other times it is a bit more potent. It will be interesting to see what aging in bottle brings, but one thing is certain; the 2016 La Dame is a stellar wine. Don't miss it. Drink 2022-2036.

The 2016 La Dame de Montrose is plump, juicy and seductive from the very first taste. Bright floral notes give the wine lovely aromatic expansiveness. Sweet red cherry, plum, pomegranate and sweet spice notes are all pushed forward. In many vintages, La Dame is a smaller-scale version of the Grand Vin, but in 2016 it is almost unusually polished and sensual, an impression that is enhanced by voluptuous, almost opulent fruit and ripe, silky tannins. In 2016, La Dame is also dominated by Merlot, which no doubt contributes to its personality. Tasted two times.

Not especially expressive on the nose but really deep and intense on the palate Very dense for a second wine but with a good raciness and energy. Rather elegant and flattering without resorting to sweetness. Quite cool on the end. Lighter and less dense than the grand vin. Drink: 2024-2039.

MontroseHet fenomenale terroir van Montrose is gekend als “het Latour van Saint Estèphe”. De wijnen zijn grandioos en vertonen een typische “austérité”. Hun parcours is vlekkeloos: vooral 2003 was een fenomenale wijn, en 1990, 2009 en 2010 zijn hun perfecte parkerscores waard. Vandaag staan de gebroeders Bouygues aan het roer van deze Deuxième Grand Cru Classé. Zij zijn bekend van de gelijknamige bouwfirma, telefonie en mediahuis TF1. De nieuwe directeur, Hervé Berland (ex Mouton), zet de doelstellingen duidelijk uit: na een jarenlange renovatie verkeren wijngaard en Château in prima conditie. Kortom, we verwachten nog vele prachtwijnen van Montrose in de komende jaren!
De wijngaard is één blok van 95 hectare op de oevers van de Gironde, aangelegd voor 1832. De naam “Mont-rose” verwijst naar de kleur van de boempjes en de heide die er vroeger stond. Het vormt met zijn Château, bijgebouwen en wijnbouwershuisjes bijna een klein dorp, waarvan de straatnamen verwijzen naar de namen van de voormalige eigenaars. Steek je neus op en je ademt onmiddellijk de zilte lucht van het maritiem klimaat die de wijngaard afkoelt in de zomer en vorst vermijdt in de winter. Bordeaux lijkt plots veraf… | |
