Geen vorst op Gloria. Het assemblage van 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 8% Petit Verdot brengt de essentie van Saint Julien in de neus met frisse zwarte bessen en ceder. Massa’s gul fruit rollen over de tong terwijl de kern ondersteund wordt door schitterende fraîcheur. Deze gebalde Gloria is bijzonder geslaagd met mooie intensiteit die verderzet in de mooie finale. Gloria gaat jong teogankelijk zijn en mooi evolueren over de jaren. Een mooie Gloria!

The 2017 Gloria was cropped at 48hl/ha and the Grand Vin comprises 65% of the total production. It has a generous bouquet with red berry fruit, warm bricks and light tobacco aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, a pretty and understated Gloria. A classic tobacco and bay leaf finish does not quite kick on like other recent vintages. Nevertheless, this is a delicious Saint-Julien that will give 20 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2022-2042.

The 2017 Gloria, tasted from a new barrel though the final blend will include 50% new oak and the remainder one-year old, has a straightforward but pure bouquet with blackberry, briary and cedar aromas accompanied by a distant whiff off the estuary. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, crisp acidity, a little “brittle” in the mouth, but quite precise towards the finish. It actually ends much better than it begins so I will expand my banded score to indicate potential upgrade in quality. Let’s see.

The 2017 Gloria is superb. At once deep and fleshy, but also beautifully delineated, the 2017 is incredibly satisfying. Succulent red and blue fruit, cedar, tobacco, anise and leather are some of the many notes that develop in the glass in an explosive, potent Saint-Julien that delivers the goods, and then some. Best of all, Gloria remains one of the most compelling values in all of Bordeaux. Don't miss it. Tasted three times.

Tight but plentiful fruit extraction. The expression is a little less full than in 2016, but there is both finesse and grip to the fine, firmly held tannins as they travel through the palate, accompanying cassis, fern, rosemary, heather and cigar box notes. Enjoyable stuff. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2017 Gloria is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with a nose of warm blackcurrants, baked blackberries and plums with cedar, earth and herbs hints. The palate is medium-bodied, juicy, soft and easy-breezy. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 14 months in French oak, 40% new. About 65% of the production was produced as grand vin. Drink 2020-2030.

From another estate that’s on an upward trajectory, the 2017 Château Gloria boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sensational bouquet of sweet crème de cassis, crushed violets, spicy oak, and graphite. It’s medium-bodied, has a rounded, opulent texture, ripe tannin, and more mid-palate density and depth than most in the vintage. It’s already hard to resist yet should cruise for 12-15 years. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, all brought up in 40% new wood.

GloriaGloria legt telkens de lat hoger. Vooral in de grote recente wijnjaren zoals 2009 en 2010, 2016 en 2018 komt Gloria op bijzonder imposante manier uit de hoek. Gloria werd niet geklasseerd in 1855 (en is ook geen Cru Bourgeois) daar het nog maar sinds 1942 bestaat onder impuls van Henri Martin. Hij was burgemeester van Saint Julien, tonnerlier en ooit régisseur van Latour. Hij bracht verschillende percelen samen in een entiteit van 44ha door ze aan te kopen van naburige Crus Classés zoals Gruaud Larose, Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton, Lagrange en Ducru Beaucaillou. Besluit: Gloria staat jaarlijks op het niveau van een Grand Cru Classé maar blijft blinken aan een vriendenprijs!... De (ondertussen) 50 hectare werden beplant tegen 10.000 wijnstokken per hectare op Graves gunziennes bovenop keien en zanderige klei. We vinden er 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 5% Petit Verdot. Gloria de meest aantrekkelijk geprijsde, grote Saint Julien met ampleur, richesse et vivacité.
Aujourd’hui, d’une superficie de 44 hectares, le vignoble du Château Gloria se répartit sur trois zones, au centre de Beychevelle, à l’ouest et au nord de l’appellation, à la limite de l’aire d’appellation Pauillac. Sur des terroirs de graves günziennes, parmi les meilleurs de l’appellation, au sous-sol de graves argilo-sabloneuses, l’encépagement est très classique avec 65 % de cabernet sauvignon, 25 % de merlot, 5 % de cabernet franc et 5 % de petit verdot. Gloria a d’ailleurs été l’un des premiers à croire au petit verdot, un très bon cépage probablement cultivé dans le Médoc longtemps avant le cabernet sauvignon. Il apporte aux assemblages sa couleur ainsi qu’un supplément de richesse aromatique, tannique et alcoolique. Avec des pieds de vigne âgés de 80 ans et d’autres de 30 ans, l’âge moyen de la vigne se situe autour de 45 ans. Sa situation est remarquable et soigneusement entretenue. Le vignoble est taillé en guyot double. Son rendement à l’hectare affiche une moyenne de 45 hectolitres pour une densité de plantation de 10 000 pieds à l’hectare.

Als schoonzoon van Henri Martin, is Jean-Louis Triaud verantwoordelijk voor deze vermaarde Saint Juliens, maar was eerder ook betrokken (in betere tijden) bij de voetballers van “les Girondins de Bordeaux”! Ze zijn sportief...
