Olifantsrivier. Old bushvine Chenin Blanc on decomposed sandstone soils. Dit jaar opnieuw een schitterende Skurfberg. Deze 100% Chenin Blanc, aangeplant tussen 1940 en 1955, is afkomstig van één van de beste terroirs van Zuid Afrika voor Chenin Blanc, nabij CItrusdal. Op de vrij toegankelijke neus met sinaasappelbloesem, citrus, kruid en gespleten keitjes volgt een mooi geconcentreerde sensatie op de tong en een rijkelijk evenwichtige finale doorspekt met ragfijne zuren. Volledig rijp geplukt en 14%vol. VOLGENS EBEN SADIE Skurfberg fruit came in fully ripe in 2017 and produced a very serious wine in the Chenin arena. The aromatics are very spicy, white pepper with some flinty tones that then cross over into again the stone fruit aromas of apples and pear skin. There is also a minerality that is running throughout the wine and not only on the aromatics, but it carries through to the palate. This wine needs a serious plate of food. IN DE PERS 96 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Augustus 2018) The 2017 Skurfberg is 100% Chenin Blanc from a 1.5-hectare parcel planted between 1940 and 1955 and was fermented and aged in old foudres. It has a very sophisticated bouquet of Japanese yuzu, mirabelle, a little honeysuckle and a light turpentine scent. The palate is beautifully balanced with perfect acidity, veins of stem ginger and a touch of curry leaf fanning out wonderfully on the finish along with hints of white peach and melon. This is one of the standouts from Eben this year. Drink 2020-2038. 94 Christian Eedes - winemag.co.za (November 2018) From Chenin Blanc planted between 1940 and 1955 in the Olifants River area. Quite a shy nose with a top note of hay before citrus and white peach plus some earthiness and a little leesy complexity. The palate shows impressive fruit concentration, coated acidity and a savoury finish. It’s intensely flavoured and seems rather more forceful than previous vintages – alcohol is 14%. Tim James – Platter’s This is an interesting vintage of this blend of three (properly ripe) vineyards from Citrusdal Mountain. More austere than usual, notably mineral. A grand wine, needing time to gain flesh. The dried apricotty, stonefruit character is there, but not (yet) deliciously so. Of all the wines, I suspect this most needs a period of grace.
