We deden dit jaar een nieuwe ontdekking. Niets bijzonders denkt u: dit is waarschijnlijk een obscure garagewijn waar we duizend keer voor de deur passeerden zonder het op te merken? Helemaal niet: het is een Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé van zomaar eventjes 58 hectare in Saint Christophe des Bardes op een van de hoogste punten van Saint Emilion. Hoe keken we ernaast? Château Laroque bleef jarenlang lang onder de radar. Zopas stelde de Familie Beaumartin een nieuwe régisseur aan: David Suire, bekend van Larcis Ducasse en Beauséjour Duffau Lagarosse. En dat is nieuw. Zijn eerste wapenfeit is een schot in de roos. Laroque 2018 is floraal en kruidig. Kalkbodems verlenen hem een frisse mineraliteit. De wijngaard strekt zich inderdaad uit over 58 hectare. Hij is gemiddeld meer dan 50 jaar oud en werd aangeplant op een densiteit van 7.400 wijnstokken per hectare. Sinds 2018 is hij gecertifieerd als Haute Valeur Environnementale Niveau 3. Lutte raisonnée, bio en biodynamische werkwijzen worden toegepast. We vonden er een plateau, oostelijk gerichte terrassen en westelijke gerichte hellingen, allen op kalk en gefossillieseerde schelpen bedekt met een fijne laag rode en kastanjekleurige klei. 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc en 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. De oogst vond plaats tussen 28 september en 12 oktober voor de Merlot en op 16 oktober voor de Cabernet Franc. Het rendement bedraagt 46hl/ha. De vinificatie gebeurt in kleine, rechthoekige betonnen cuves en de malo-lactische fermentatie in barriques van o.a. Taransaud, Ana Selection, Stockinger en Boutes. Elevage in barriques en foudres. 50% nieuwe eik. 14,5%vol. Er waarden 140.000 flessen gebotteld waarvan 41% Grand Vin. Dit is nieuw, opmerkelijk en aangenaam geprijsd. Silky, polished and refined, the 2018 marks a major step forward for the château. Lavender, spice, blueberry, cedar and mint all grace a Saint-Émilion built more on finesse than power. The long, persistent finish, with its saline accents, adds to the wine's pedigree. The 2018 is beautifully done. The blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Technical Director David Suire gave the 2018 lots 26-29 days on the skins fermented in cement, with manual pump-overs and punch-downs. New oak is 55%. Drink 2026-2043. 91-94 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (April 2019) The 2018 Laroque is a very pretty, pliant Saint-Émilion. Bright red raspberry, blood orange, mint and sweet floral notes give the 2018 striking energy to play off a core of radiant, supple fruit. Medium in body and gracious, Laroque has so much to offer in 2018. Although Laroque is not one of the most concentrated or structured Saint-Émilions, it is a wine of superb drinkability and pure pleasure. The blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Technical Director David Suire gave the 2018 lots 26-29 days on the skins fermented in cement, with manual pumpovers and punchdowns. New oak is 55%. Suire, best known for his work alongside Nicolas Thienpont, is doing great things at Laroque. Tasted four times. 93-94 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (April 2019) This is really delicious with so much dark-berry and stone character. Full to medium body and super, integrated tannins. Bright and generous. One of the best from here. We will see if it is better than 2016 and 2015. 93-95 Jane Anson – decanter.com (April 2019) Beautifully measured, elegant and restrained, this has juiciness and hidden power. It's definitely less exuberant than some, giving tight black fruits and fine tannins alongside a limestone grip and a slate crawl across the palate, slowing you down and forcing you to pay attention as the floral character comes slowly winding out of the glass. 95 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Laroque is composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new barriques. The alcohol is 14.5% and the pH is 3.48. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts from the glass with flamboyant notes of stewed black plums, Black Forest cake and boysenberries, plus hints of candied violets, star anise and unsmoked cigars with a playful waft of sassafras. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with juicy black fruits, supported by plush tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Drink 2025-2045. 95-97 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (April 2019) Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Laroque is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal fragrant black cherries, wild blueberries and blackberry preserves scents with hints of crushed rocks, underbrush and violets plus a waft of Marmite toast. Full-bodied and jam-packed with bright, crunchy black and blue fruits, it has a firm line of ripe, fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing very long and layered. Impressive! Being aged in oak barriques, 50% new, the blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. 92-95 James Molesworth – winespectator.com (April 2019) Well-proportioned, featuring cassis and blackberry fruit, balanced by brambly grip, juicy acidity and lively anise and black tea details. Very nicely put together. 96 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (2021) 95-97 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (April 2019) A blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc representing just 41% of the total production, the 2018 Château Laroque is still resting in barrels and oak tanks. Its deep purple color is followed by a classy bouquet of ripe black cherries, cassis, graphite, licorice, and crushed rocks. Deep, medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful mid-palate and ripe, silky tannins, it's an incredible success for the estate, which is firing on all cylinders today thanks to the talented David Suire! 92 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Laroque fulfills the promise it showed from barrel last year. It has an irresistible bouquet of layered black cherry and blueberry fruit, fresh and lively with beautifully integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and a spicy, black-pepper-tinged finish that feels ever so slightly attenuated. Give this 3–4 years in bottle if you can. Drink 2024-2040. 91-93 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Oktober 2019) The 2018 Laroque has a rich and creamy bouquet with upfront blueberry and cassis fruit, modern in style but managing to retain delineation and avoid excess. The palate is smooth and rounded with quite noticeable vanillary oak, although there is plenty of fruit underneath. The tannins feel quite fine and there is a sense of harmony and persistent on the plush finish. Whilst not a profound Saint-Émilion, it does make for a seductively gorgeous wine. Drink 2022-2042. 94-95 Bettane & Desseauve (April 2019) David Suire a bien maîtrisé le millésime où le côté calcaire du terroir apporte la fraîcheur de constitution, avec une ampleur du millésime bien corsetée. Un tournant dans l’histoire du cru. 95-96 Matthieu Doumenge - Terre des Vins (April 2019) Laroque s’impose comme une valeur montante parmi les crus classés. Nez capiteux, camphré, musc, épices, avec un côté “force tranquille”. La bouche est signée par un merlot (95%) élancé, vibrant, aromatique, avec un côté traçant issu du terroir calcaire. C’est un vin plein d’énergie et de sève, à la texture pure, aux tanins élégants et à la finale saline. 94 Jean-Marc Quarin – quarin.com (April 2019) Ma meilleure note donnée à ce cru en primeur. Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez fruité, mûr, suave et épicé. Minutieux dès l'attaque, puis suave et parfumé en milieu de bouche, le vin évolue ascendant, juteux, profond et noble, avec du goût dans la persistance, une nuance sanguine et épicée et des tannins très fins. Assemblage : 97 % merlot, 3 % cabernet franc. Degré d'alcool : 14°5 (moyenne plus) - pH: 3,48 (moyenne). Rendement : 46 hl/ha. 2018 est le quatrième millésime complet de David Suire sur cette propriété. Pour mémoire, il vinifie aussi Larcis Ducasse et Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse. En 2018, le terroir de Laroque (75 % sur le plateau calcaire, avec des zones plus argileuses, puis en coteaux) sert positivement l'expression du vin. Vous noterez que cet assemblage audacieux est quasiment un 100 % merlot redessiné par l'énergie du terroir. 2028 - 2045. 93-95 Yohann Castaign – anthocyanes.fr (April 2019) Très beau nez fumé, fruits noirs “al dente”, un peu fleurs. Menthol et plus floral à l’aération. Bouche dense et charnue, très beau jus, des tanins fins et délicats tout en étant suaves. Grosse densité d’ensemble sans être opulent. Finale fraiche, fruitée et aérienne pour un Laroque 2018 plein d’énergie, de chair et de précision calcaire. Un millésime qui fera date pour cette propriété en pleine évolution qualitative. 18,5/20 Tjark Witzgall – WeinWisser (April 2019) 93-95 Chris Kissack – thewinedoctor.com (April 2019) We were talking at Château Laroque, where David has fashioned what has to be the best wine I have ever tasted at this estate. The blend is 97% Merlot, picked between September 28th and October 12th, and 3% Cabernet Franc, picked October 16th. The alcohol is 14.5%, the pH 3.48. The nose seems pure and pretty, floral and perfumed, with fragrant rose petal notes, as well as a little sweet red cherry and pepper, and a light minty freshness. There is a nice density here, but it is controlled, supple, fresh, lightly creamed, and rich in spiced red plum and red cherries. The structure comes from a bed of supple and tightly grained tannins, coursing through the middle and finish of the palate. This is so much better than the Laroque of old, with texture and substance, and a long life ahead of it. A real vin de garde with some subtle, savoury, saline and salty edges. 94 Jacques Perrin – vinifera (April 2019) Belle finesse d'expression.Très fruits noirs, réglisse, avec de fines notes boisées et épicées. Belle entrée en bouche, savoureuse. Il évolue continu sur une trame très fine.Très belle fraîcheur sur ce vin qui finit sur un tannin savoureux, légèrement granuleux. Une propriété à suivre avec attention. Jeremy Williams – winewordsandvideotape.com (April 2019) Next up was my first visit to Château Laroque with winemaker David Suire. This is a fascinating property not far from Château Tertre Roteboeuf and Château Troplong Mondot, set in wonderfully commanding limestone and clay terroir. At 61 hectares it is big for St Emilion [though it was bigger historically]. The château itself is wonderfully grand. Clearly this is a property undergoing a quiet renaissance. David Suire also works with the Thienponts at Château Larcis Ducasse and Château Beauséjour [HdL]. He’s been here at Laroque since 2015 and I reckon you can see his growing influence in the wines. The 2018 looks to be an outstanding effort. The fruit is beautifully pure and enticing with excellent texture. Château Laroque is certainly a property to watch and one which, at least for the moment, should prove affordable in this vintage. 93 Markus del Monego (April 2019) Deep purple red colour with violet hue. Expressive nose, slightly oak dominated, roasting aroma, coffee, blackberries and ripe plums. On the palate opulent with ripe tannins, good structure and length with aromatic finish. Les Echos Spécial Vin (April 2019) Une propriété longtemps oubliée, cachée dans les combes de Saint-Emilion et plantée sur des terroirs magnifiques. Elle retrouve tout son lustre. Avec son éclat de fruits noirs et ses tanins délicats, ce vin oscille entre tension calcaire et densité des argiles. Excellent rapport qualité - prix. Daniel Sériot – Journal d’un passionné de la rive droite (April 2019) L'olfaction est intense et séduisante, avec des parfums de cerises, de mûres sauvages, de fines épices, de violettes et d'élevage distingué en arrière-plan. La bouche offre une texture très veloutée à soyeuse, les tannins fins, mûrs, enrobés par une chair bien formée, se trament dans un corps sphérique, dense et très fruité. La finale est longue, fraîche, d'un bon maintien, dotée d'une texture fine et veloutée, très expressive (pureté aromatique) et persistante. 93-95 Jeff Leve – winecellarinsider.com (April 2019) Inky in hue, the wine looks like a dark gemstone with purple around the edge. With just one swirl, you get black and blue fruits, flowers, incense, licorice, dark chocolate and smoke. Powerful, full-bodied, concentrated, and intense, this vintage is at an entirely new level for Laroque. The wine manages to remain balanced between its opulent nature, incredible level of density, silky palate feel and length. The wine was made with 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.5 alcohol with a pH of 3.48. This is your hot tip of the day: Chateau Laroque is a diamond in the rough and the wine sells for a pittance despite the high level of quality. This will change as the wine gets discovered so buy it now if this reads like your style of wine.
