Fonplégade 2018 is excellent. Ik noteerde het vier maal op mijn proefnotitie. Uitvoeriger omschreven is dit fijn, precies, intens, volmaakt en evenwichtig. Dit werkt op 90% Merlot en 10% Cabernet Franc. De oogst vond plaats tussen 21 september en 2 oktober. Het élevage gebeurt op 50% nieuwe eik, 30% barriques van een jaar, 10% op cement en 10% in amforen. Fonplégade is geliefd in België, al haalde het vroeger nooit zo’n hoge kwaliteit als vandaag. Some of the youthful exuberance the 2018 showed from barrel has naturally subsided, revealing a Saint-Émilion of real finesse and nuance. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, blood orange and cinnamon are all beautifully layered. Even so, the 2018 was a bit more impressive en primeur. Hopefully, it is just closed post-bottling. We will see. Drink 2026-2043. 92-95 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (April 2019) Fonplégade is rich, layered and sumptuous, to a degree it has not been before. Raspberry jam, mocha, espresso and licorice all burst out of the glass. Sensual and alluring, Fonplégade is absolutely gorgeous in 2018. The oak is just a bit pronounced at this stage, but the wine appears to have all of the natural depth to handle it. Proprietors Denise and Stephen Adams, along with consulting winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team, continue to take Fonplégade to new heights. The 2018 is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, from yields of just 27 hectoliters per hectare, down from the more typical 35 or so. Tasted two times. 93-94 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (April 2019) 94 Jane Anson – decanter.com (April 2019) 95 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (Maart 2021) Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Fonplegade needs no convincing, charging out of the gate with bold notions of black cherry preserves, mulberries and ripe, juicy black plums, leading to suggestions of Indian spices, dried roses and smoked meats plus a touch of tar. The medium to full-bodied palate is beautifully crafted, dripping with poise and sophistication, draped in plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering black cherry note. A very polished showing! Drink 2023-2043. 93-95 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (April 2019) Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Fonplegade strides confidently out of the glass with bold black cherries, warm plums and black raspberry scents plus hints of cedar chest, pencil shavings, lavender, garrigue and camphor. Full-bodied, rich and packed with expressive black fruits, it has a firm, velvety texture and just enough freshness, finishing long. 93-96 James Molesworth – winespectator.com (April 2019) 92 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Fonplégade has gained some composure since I tasted it from barrel. Raspberry, wild strawberry and light orange pith aromas unfurl in the glass, though it is not the most complex Saint-Émilion that I encountered during my tastings. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very refined and focused, delivering a mélange of red and black fruit laced with white pepper, clove and minerals. This actually surpasses its showing from barrel, hence the higher score. Excellent. Drink 2022-2040. 88-90 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Oktober 2019) The 2018 Fonplégade has a ripe confit-like bouquet with cherry liqueur and blueberry aromas, heady and opulent. The palate is sweet and chewy with dense black fruit laced with tar and graphite. It has a vanillary veneer of new oak on the finish with intense black fruit underneath. It is overtly heady in style but I wonder exactly how much I could drink before falling over? Notes florales, d’orange sanguine et de cassis. Attaque puissante, soyeuse et fraiche. Les tannins sont élégants et le final est saline et crayeuse. FonplégadeHet Amerikaans koppel Denise en Stephen Adams zijn hier de residerende Chatelains. Deze bijzonder charmante mensen steunen op een geweldig team met Eloi Jacob als régisseur en Corine Comme, Stéphane Derenoncourt en Michel Rolland als consulenten. Fonplégade omvat 18,5 hectare verdeeld over het plateau calcaire en een helling van klei en kalk. Het management is bio-gecertifieerd sinds 2013 en biodynamisch sinds 2017. |
