Wijnen

In 2002, maar ook in 2013, werd op deze kleine wijngaard van 4,5 hectare geen wijn aangeboden. Compromissen worden hier niet gemaakt: de eigenaars verkiezen kwaliteit boven alles... Maar dit jaar is Hosanna “back with a vengeance”: na het aanschouwen van brioche en bosbessen in de neus, verschijnt het gebruikelijk rijp en intens karakter in de attaque. In de mond is deze Pomerol sappig en zuiver. Hij is gelaagd en precies omlijnd en zijn intensiteit imponeert, zij het met iets meer gravitas dan anders. Zoals het een grote wijn past, verloopt de smaakervaring crescendo tot in een majestueuze finale. De som is eenvoudig te maken: evenwicht + finesse + rijpheid = Hosanna. Dit is een grote Pomerol, voorzien van 30% Cabernet Franc. In 2014 was dit cépage bijzonder succesvol.

The 2014 Hosanna followed the 2014 Latour-à-Pomerol at my tasting at J-P Moueix. To be frank, it did not quite possess the same breeding and precision as that wine, veering more towards red rather than black fruit, crushed strawberry and mulberry, tinged with clove and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and impressive fruit concentration. Here is the real quality: a structured and quite masculine Hosanna, albeit with genuine complexity, allspice and clove intermixed with dusky black fruit and freshly cracked black pepper. It finishes with a sense of confidence and style. Hopefully the aromatics can improve during bottle age; I strongly suspect that they will. Drink: 2020 – 2040.

The Château Hosanna 2014, back after a year's absence, makes up for lost time with a winning tobacco and gravel themed bouquet, plenty of black dusky fruit following behind. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. It is less exuberant and voluptuous in style compared to recent vintage, but there is more weight and presence than say, the Certan-de-May, with quite long, lightly spiced, structured finish. Perhaps this Hosanna is atypically "serious" in style, but it should offer 15 to 20 years' drinking pleasure. Drink: 2018 – 2034.

Scented and alluring. Some lovely fresh Cabernet Franc aromas and a silky texture. Very winning indeed in a medium register. Lots of refreshment (only just not too much acidity). Will always be relatively light but should offer great pleasure. Drink 2024-2040.

Hosanna

Hosanna werd op korte tijd een ikoon. Het ontstond in 1999 uit het beste perceel van 4,5 hectare van het voormalige Certan Guiraud, waarvan 3,5 in productie in 2022. De ligging, hoog op het plateau van Pomerol, is spectaculair: ten Noorden ligt Lafleur, ten Oosten Petrus en ten Zuiden Vieux Château Certan. Hosanna wordt gemeenzaam omschreven als "de Cheval Blanc van Pomerol" omwille van de 30% Cabernet Franc in de wijngaard. Het trackrecord is nu al "fameux": zo werd het ondermaats bevonden 2002 nooit te koop aangeboden en benadert de 2009 de perfectie. De lat ligt hoog…

Moueix

Christian Moueix is net zoals zijn legendarische vader, Jean-Pierre Moueix, vereenzelvigd met Pomerol. Na zijn studies aan UC Davis eind de jaren 1960, vervoegde hij de Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix waarvan hij de leiding nam. Zijn zoon Edouard staat nu aan zijn zijde. Hij bestuurt een indrukwekkend imperium dat ondermeer La Fleur Pétrus, Trotanoy en Hosanna omvat in Pomerol, Bélair Monange in Saint Emilion en Dominus in Napa Valley. In 2008 werd hij “Decanter Man of the Year”.
