Opgelet: dit is prachtwijn! Onze klanten herinneren zich de fantastische 2005 nog levendig en zullen in de wolken zijn met deze 2015: onder de hoede van Monsieur Viaud, een medewerker van oenoloog Michel Rolland, worden de tannines beheerst en lijkt Côte de Baleau een nog meer flamboyante weg te zijn ingeslaan. Eigenaar Mathieu Cuvelier (van Clos Fourtet en Poujeaux) bewijst nog maar eens dat hij van wanten weet. De wijngaard is slechts 15 hectare groot en er wordt ook een tweede wijn gemaakt. Selectie maakt nu eenmaal wel het verschil. De proefnotities van Neal Martin en Antonio Galloni liegen niet.

The 2015 Cote de Baleau has a fresh, red cherry and crushed strawberry-scented bouquet, candied but pure and appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, velvety smooth with good depth, mocha-tinged black fruit taking over the steering wheel toward the finish. This should be an approachable Saint-Émilion that will offer several years of drinking pleasure, probably more. Anticipated maturity: 2020 - 2030.

The 2015 Côte de Baleau has a refined and intense bouquet with precise black and red fruit, seamlessly integrated oak and a sense of terroir coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity and plenty of finesse and poise towards the finish. This is such a pretty Saint Emilion that you almost overlook its length and persistence. It is one of the best wines that I have tasted from the estate. Drink: 2019-2038.

Just as it was en primeur, the 2015 Côte de Baleau is pure class. Silky tannins, lifted aromatics and soft, caressing fruit meld together to inform a super-polished, elegant Saint-Émilion that speaks with a hushed, sensual voice. Readers who appreciate the more restrained side of Bordeaux will find much to admire. Drink 2020-2035.

The Cuvelier family's 2015 Côte du Baleau is a very pretty wine. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, herbs, smoke and earthy notes are pushed forward. The tannins here have always been tough to domesticate, but in 2015, the wine possesses lovely richness and overall pliancy. This is an attractive, mid-weight Saint-Émilion that should drink well with minimal cellaring. This is one of the more restrained wines of the year (in relative terms) in Saint-Émilion.

Cuvelier

Philippe Cuvelier kocht het befaamde Clos Fourtet in 2001. Samen met zijn zoon Matthieu kocht hij ondertussen Poujeaux in Moulis, maar ook Grandes Murailles en Côte de Baleau in Saint Emilion. Ze bezitten in minderheidsaandeel in Clos Saint Martin.
