Piekenierskloof. “Old skool” Grenache on granite.

Deze verbluffende, ongeënte Grenache van Piekenierskloof, haast rosé in zijn tinten, vertoont lengte en precisie van het allerhoogste niveau. Soldaat is een onwezenlijk mooie wijn in alle aspecten van zijn verschijning en dit al van op een jonge leeftijd. In feite vertel je het beter niet verder… Prachtwijn!

If there is one wine that keeps us on our toes, it is this one. The light pigmentation of the berries, the big stalks and the slow annual fermentation make this one of the more difficult and challenging wines in the cellar. It is the most nerve-wrecking member in the collection of old vineyard wines, but therefore also the most rewarding. The 2015 is elegant and complex; and is already showing very well. It has less acidity than the previous two bottlings and is more approachable as well. This wine has already opened up and is drinking beautifully, whereas many of the higher acidity wines require more time.

94/100 Neal Martin – The Wine Advocate Issue #230 – robertparker.com (April 2017) - The 2015 Old Vine Series Soldaat is one of the few labels from Eben that is still 100% whole bunch, aged in concrete only. It has a brambly red berry fruit, a slight granitic note overlayed by wilted rose petal. The palate is very fresh and vibrant on the entry, perhaps a little more body and density than previous vintages that I have tasted, with immense purity and varietal expression on the finish. This is excellent and a very strong follow-up to the 2014. Drink 2018-2030.

From ungrafted and unirrigated old bush vine Grenache in Piekenierskloof. A billowing nose of red and even some black berries, olive, fynbos and fresh herbs. The palate is super-flavourful with snappy acidity and prickly tannins – lots of whole-bunch fermentation character in evidence. It’s a particular take on the variety, winemaker Eben Sadie having apparently pulled out all the stops in this vintage.
