De historische Cru Brunate is gelegen in La Morra, ten Zuiden van Barolo, op een bodem van kalkachtig klei. De wijnstokken zijn 43 jaar oud en worden geleid in Gouyot. De druiven worden zachtjes gekneusd en de most vergist op cuve gedurende 23 dagen op 30-32°C met dagelijkse remontage in open lucht en pigeage. De malo-lactische gisting gebeurt op eik en voor de élevage wordt 32 maand voorzien op Franse barrique en Sloveense foudres. De 2012 Brunate schittert in intens robijnrood. Roald Dahl zou zeggen: het is een ware GVR (or BFG in English) met brede schouders. Hij is gul, harmonieus en evenwichtig maar verschuilt zich haast op timiede wijze achter een ontzaglijke fluwelen textuur. Klassiek gestileerd, immens in zijn rijp rood fruit, grenzeloos rijkelijk, oh zo elegant en een zéér lange finale. Kruiden, rozen, viooltjes, pruimpjes en teer; kortom de bellissimo Brunate! With time and a good bit of air, the Brunate becomes a bit more precise and nuanced, yet it remains a bit monolithic next to the other wines in the range. A host of savory herbs, licorice, tobacco and dark fruits meld into the huge, explosive finish. There is no shortage of depth or character. This is an uneven vintage across the appellation, but Vietti has managed to harness the very best side of the grape during this growing season. The wine is densely concentrated and rich with black cherry, cassis and spice. It shows firm structure at the back with elegantly polished and fine-tuned tannins. The wine is almost approachable now (in another five years), but is more suitable for longer bottle aging.
