Léoville Barton is altijd een grote, ambitieuze bewaarwijn. In kleine jaren troeft hij de competitie genadeloos af, eens hij op dronk komt. In een immens groot jaar voor Saint Julien als 2016 plant deze behemoth een mijlpaal in de geschiedenis van het Château. En hier kan geschiedenis tellen want Léoville Barton is het Château van de Médoc dat al het langst in familiale handen is. De lijfspreuk van de familie Barton, « Forte et Fortitudine », wordt hier letterlijk in wijn omgezet. Diepdonker gekleurd. Indrukwekkend in kracht en precisie. Deze powerhouse van een jonge wijn, gemaakt ter ere van de grote Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) en van Graves médocaines. De fraîcheur siert hem zo, dat wij wel moeten concluderen : dit is een grote, zéér grote Léoville Barton. De rauwe, ontstuimige kracht lijkt nu nog vrij ontzagwekkend: deze reus van een wijn is gebouwd voor de lange termijn, verafschuwt compromis en neemt geen gevangenen. « Bravo! » zullen de geduldigen uitroepen. 86% Cabernet Sauvignon en 14% Merlot.
De pers in een notedop : deze « stand-out » (Jancis Robinson 18/20) Léoville Barton is « a total triumph » (Jane Anson 96) met « nobility and pedigree » (Antionio Galloni 93-96) en « serious punch and drive » (Wine Spectator 96-99).
Deze wijn werd ondertussen uitgeroepen tot wijn van het jaar 2019 door Wine Spectator: "For its long family tradition, for its excellent quality in a superb vintage, for its relative value, the Leoville Barton St Julien 2016 is Wine Spectator’s wine of the year for 2019.”

This is so vivid as it brims with pastis-soaked plum, blackberry, black currant and blueberry paste flavors, all carried by a perfectly integrated brambly spine. Tar and ganache notes give the finish an extra kick while everything stays within the mouthwatering roasted apple wood frame. Both regal and rambunctious, this is Saint Julien to a T. The 2016 Léoville Barton has a beautiful bouquet of blackberry, gravel and hints of black truffle and pencil shavings, blossoming with aeration yet remaining classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with gorgeous ripe tannins that exert gentle grip. Lightly spiced and wonderfully focused, leaving the tongue tingling with glee long after the wine has departed. This is one of the finest wines from the estate in recent years. Drink 2022-2040.

The 2016 Leoville-Barton is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot picked from 29 September until 13 October, matured in 60% new oak and delivering 13% alcohol. It has a more intense bouquet compared to the Langoa-Barton, plenty of intense blackberry and raspberry fruit, minerals, cedar and a hint of licorice. The palate is a little chewy on the entry with good grip in the mouth. This demonstrates the backbone of the finish, just the right amount of spiciness with excellent salinity on the long finish. It is not a once-in-a-lifetime Leoville Barton, but (as usual) it just seems to do everything right. Maybe it's not quite up there with the stellar 2015 Léoville Barton, which I re-tasted at the time, but it is not far off. Drink: 2026-2055.

The 2016 Léoville-Barton is fabulous. A wine of breadth and power, the 2016 has so much to offer. The black cherry, chocolate, gravel, smoke and licorice flavors are all boldly sketched. A host of expressive savory and mineral notes develop into the substantial finish. Drink 2026-2046.

The 2016 Léoville-Barton is superb. Precision, nuance and delineation are the signatures in a wine that speaks to class above all else. Eloquent and nuanced to the core, the 2016 is simply magnificent. There is a fair bit of tannin, but the grain is very, very fine. The 2016 is not a huge Léoville-Barton, but it is a wine of nobility and pedigree. Tasted two times.

Dark blackish purple. Less obviously aromatic than Langoa. Tea-leaf notes. Round texture with gloriously ripe tannins. Really a standout Barton. So unusually supple! Yet with masses of tannins underneath. This will surely be one of the vintage's longer-living wines. Glorious texture and flavour. Utterly minerally dry, but not drying. Very good freshness – much fresher than many of its peers. Real energy. Drink: 2027-2047.

Léoville BartonLeoville Barton is een vaste waarde voor elke Bordeauxdrinker en is een jaarlijkse aankoop waard. Als traditionele bewaarwijn en 2ème Grand Cru Classé Saint Julien behoort hij steevast tot de beste wijnen in elk millésime. Die mooie kwaliteit haalt hij met een schijnbaar gemak, terwijl zijn prijs altijd de vergelijking met gelijken doorstaat. Dit is het Château in de Médoc die al het langst in handen is van één en dezelfde familie: de Bartons. De 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, heraangeplant in de jaren 1980, domineert van het assemblage en wordt aangevuld met 23% Merlot en 3% Cabernet Franc. De wijngaard van 51 hectare is aangeplant met een densiteit van 9.100 wijnstokken per hectare; ze zijn gemiddeld 38 jaar oud in 2018. Een ruime jaarlijkse productie van 20.000 kisten komt zijn populariteit ten goede. La Réserve de Léoville Barton is zijn voortreffelijke tweede wijn.
BartonAnthony Barton was één van de meest gerespecteerde persoonlijkheden in de Médoc. Hij overleed in 2022 en was de achtste generatie van de familie achter Léoville Barton en Langoa Barton in Saint Julien en inmiddels ook Mauvesin Barton in Moulis en Médoc.
De familie Barton is een Engelse familie die in Ierland aankwam in de XVIIde Eeuw. In 1722 kwam zeevaarder Thomas Barton zich vestigen in Bordeaux om er wijn te exporteren naar Ierland, toen een even grote afzetmarkt als Engeland. Zijn kleinzoon Hugh kocht in 1821 Langoa en in 1826 zelfs een kwart van het Château de Léoville van de Marquis de las Cases (oorspronkelijk vormden las Cases, Poyferré en Barton één geheel). De negende en tiende generaties tekenen nog altijd present met dochter Lilian en kleinzoon Damien. Hun lijfspreuk klinkt toepasselijk: “Fide et Fortitudine”. De familie is op vandaag de oudste familie van Château-eigenaars in de Médoc.
