Als La Chenade met zijn graves Catwoman is, dan is Les Cruzelles met zijn betere kleigronden Batman. Waarschijnlijk houdt de belezen en gecultiveerde Denis Durantou minder van deze vergelijking. Desalniettemin schakelt de Batmobile hier naar een hogere versnelling! Mes excuses mon cher Monsieur. Neem van mij aan dat deze Lalande de Pomerol (90% Merlot en 10% Cabernet Franc) "beter en goedkoper" is dan vele wijnen in Pomerol. In 2016 worden 2.200 kistjes geproduceerd, al lijkt "geschonken" een beter woord. De wijn geniet nu van een élevage in 50% nieuwe eik.
Het complex boeket van bramen, zwarte kersen en zoethoud komt hartelijk uit de hoek. Het palet sublimeert de fruitige en kruidige kern met exotische tonaliteiten van anijs, koffie en cacao. Het geheel wordt in zachtheid omlijst en met fraîcheur gepresenteerd. Ook deze onweerstaanbare Les Cruzelles lijkt onmisbaar in uw selectie anno 2016. Ten zeerste aanbevolen. The 2016 Les Cruzelles, Denis Durantou’s other Lalande de Pomerol after La Chenade, was bottled around the same time, at the end of May 2018. It has a slightly more savory bouquet than the La Chenade, featuring scents of black cherry and lavender plus light notes of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grippy tannin. There is a symmetry and tension about this Les Cruzelles that I love. It’s a tad closed at the moment, but it will open in its own time. "Give it a chance to mellow," says Durantou. Sage advice. The 2016 Les Cruzelles, Denis Durantou's second estate in Lalande-de-Pomerol, is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked 22-29 September and on 6 October, respectively. The yield is 40 hectoliters per hectare, and it is matured in 50% new oak. It has a very fragrant bouquet with perfumed red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit infused with minerals, like the La Chenade, very harmonious and detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, crisp acidity, a little spicier than the La Chenade and perhaps with a touch more persistence on the finish. Cellar space should be made for this sensual and engaging wine, and if prices follow their trend as in previous years, it could be one of the Right Bank's outstanding values. Drink: 2020-2035.

The 2016 Les Cruzelles is every bit as captivating from bottle as it was from barrel. Dense, pliant and inviting, the 2016 has so much to offer. Black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, new leather and lavender all run through this super-expressive, pliant Lalande de Pomerol from Denis Durantou. The 2016 offers a striking combination of fruit intensity and structure. I loved it. Drink 2021-2031.

The 2016 Les Cruzelles is a more serious, structured wine than the Chenade. Beams of tannin give the wine its sense of energy and drive. Blue and purplish hued stone fruits, licorice, lavender, menthol and graphite are nicely delineated. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2016 will need a year or two in bottle to be at its best. I was not at all surprised when Denis Durantou told me he planned to give the 2016 an extra month or two in barrel. The wine will probably need all of that added time in barrel to fully come together.

Another success from Denis Durantou. How many times does this man need to prove that he can deliver in every vintage? His wines are just so utterly drinkable, that's the key to Durantou. This was a little tighter and more serious, then we changed samples to a younger one which is more expressive, and you feel the juice catching the tannins in that wonderful way where there are two tracks happening - the top frame of fruits and wet stones, and then the juice bubbling underneath, filling out the mid-palate. Love this. 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on gravel-clay soils yielding 40hl/ha, aged in 50% new oak. The Merlot was picked between 22nd and 29th September while the Cab Franc was picked on 6th October. Drink: 2022-2038.

Les CruzellesLes Cruzelles ligt op 1 km van het befaamde plateau van Pomerol, in de appellatie Lalande de Pomerol. Je ziet de wijngaard al van aan de achterdeur van l’Eglise Clinet. De eigenaar van deze mythische Pomerol, Denis Durantou, kocht deze wijngaard in 2000 herplantte hem naar zijn veeleisende verlangens. Les Cruzelles is steeds een sappige Pomerol-lookalike, ook al zorgt de bescheidener herkomst voor lagere prijzen. Deze hoge kwaliteit en lage prijs maakt hem tot een kleine l’Eglise Clinet voor beginners... Een grote aanrader dus!
100% Merlot in 50% nieuwe eik. Met de jongste wijnstokken maakt hij La Chenade. DurantouDenis Durantou was een geniale wijnmaker en één van de allergrootste in Bordeaux. De kleine productie van zijn Pomerol "extraordinaire" Eglise Clinet is wereldwijd gegeerd.
Zijn talent bewees hij bovendien in de betaalbare wijnen die hij daarnaast maakte: van de achterdeur van l’Eglise Clinet zag Denis zijn wijngaarden van Les Cruzelles en La Chenade (Lalande de Pomerol). Verderop vinden we Saintayme (Saint Emilion) en Montlandrie (Castillon). Ze zijn allemaal heerlijk, geloofwaardig en overtuigend. Saintayme is een perceel van 35 jaar oude Merlots op klei en graves in Saint Etienne de Lisse binnen de appellatie Saint Emilion. In Lalande de Pomerol worden Les Cruzelles en La Chenade gemaakt naargelang de bodemsamenstelling en de ouderdom van de wijnstokken. De jonge wijnstokken van La Chenade (gelegen op graves) verleiden terwijl we de oudere wijnstokken van Les Cruzelles op klei en graves bodems kunnen vergelijken we goede Pomerols. Sinds de aankoop in 2000 zette Denis de wijngaard maniacaal naar zijn hand. Montlandrie in Castillon is de recentste aankoop: de 11 hectare klei en kalkgronden zijn beplant met 25 jaar oude wijnstokken (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc of 70%, 25% en 5% Cabernet Sauvignon vanaf 2016). Buiten de erkende appellaties om, behoren deze wijnen tot de beste van Bordeaux. De tweede wijn van Eglise Clinet, La Petite Eglise, is zeldzaam met een jaarlijks productie beperkt tot zo'n 7.000 flesjes.
Het levenswerk van Denis Durantou wordt verdergezet door zijn drie dochters. « Je veux continuer à faire honneur au travail de mon père », zegt Noémie die al 4 jaar vinifieert samen met Olivier Gautrat, al 20 jaar maître de chai. « À Pomerol, Je suis chez moi. J’y ai grandi, j’allais à l’école du village, je jouais dans le chai et j’ai le souvenir des odeurs… ». Constance zorgt voor 400 olijfbomen en truffeleiken. Alix volgt vanuit Parijs en is gepassioneerd door kunst en Japanse cultuur. Hun mama, kunstenares Marie Reilhac neemt deel aan de assemblages. Zeventig jaar oude Cabernet Franc wijnstokken gedijen op het perfect gedraineerd terroir van argilo-graveleux. Eglise Clinet is één van de grootste wijnen die er zijn. Hun Les Cruzelles in Lalande-de-Pomerol en Montlandrie in Castillon zijn superwijnen en blijven héél toegankelijk. | |
