Wijnen

Het woord « Sizie » vindt zijn oorsprong in naam van de XIIIde Eeuwse eigenaar, Renaud de Sessie, die looierijen had in Beaune. De wijngaard omvat 1,62 hectare op een kleihoudende bodem aan de voet van de helling. Verwacht een gulle plezierwijn met al snel, toegankelijk fruit. Hij zal vroeg zijn potentieel laten ervaren. U kan met andere woorden vandaag genieten of verrast worden door bewaring tot zo’n 15 jaar.
Ook al is de Côte de Beaune geschikt voor de wijnbouw van beide bourgondische druivesoorten (zowel de witte Chardonnay als de rode Pinot Noir), toch lijkt Beaune een voorkeur te hebben voor rode wijnen (363ha Pinot Noir waarvan 281ha in Premier Cru op een totaal van 410ha aangeplant). In het begin van de XXste Eeuw waren de wijnen van Beaune even gewaardeerd als deze van Volnay, Pommard of Corton.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru les Sizies is one-third whole cluster fruit matured in 15% new oak. It has a perfumed, floral bouquet with dried rose petal scents littered over the red cherry and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, tart red cherries mixed with strawberry and a hint of spice towards the vibrant finish. An excellent wine from de Montille. Drink 2018-2030.

Bottled in April of this year; 15% new oak: Good dark red. Subtle black cherry and spice aromas are enlivened by an impression of sound acidity (this fruit was picked very early, on September 3). Silky for Beaune wine and not at all rustic, with its plum and blackcurrant flavors complicated by spicy and saline qualities. Finishes ripely tannic and long. This wine from mostly younger vines has turned out very well.

(one-third vendange entier and 20% new oak; not yet racked): Bright dark red. Lovely floral lift to the black cherry aroma, with added energy from a positive peppery note. At once juicy and dense, offering a distinctly sappy, savory quality to its fresh, pure black cherry fruit. Finishes firmly tannic and a bit medicinal but also sweeter and longer than the Nuits-Saint-Georges. Much of this vineyard, planted on clay-based soil, is young. Sieve noted that this wine could also be labeled Les Avaux, as Domaine de Montille's holdings are in the section of Les Sizies that's surrounded on three sides by Les Avaux.

We had a warm growing season but we were helped by 50mm of rain on 10 August and 40mm on 18-20 August. In the end the disease pressure was a non-issue. There was a level phenolic ripeness that extended down to vines that are just 15 years old. In fact, it was only the oldest vines that did not flower so well. In terms of concentration of red fruit, they have a very good tannin profile and superb acidity. It will one of those vintages that is top notch. I like the profile better than the 2005 or 2009s and I just love the bright acidity. Without wishing to take anything away, there is a level of red fruit that was lost in those vintages. The whites were picked early on 26 August to hold on to the acid profile. I think they will speak more about the vignerons as much as anything else.

Domaine de Montille

Sinds 1730 kenden 9 generaties de Montille een bewogen geschiedenis. De twee jongste generaties breidden het Domaine weer uit tot 37 hectare (20 rood en 17 wit). De eigenzinnige bewaarwijnen van vader Hubert de Montille werden altijd al gesmaakt. Tegelijk bottelde deze advocaat, overleden in 2014, au Domaine zoals DRC, Roumier of Rousseau en hielp hij de grenzen van Grand Cru en Premier Cru uittekenen. Zoon Etienne innoveerde als eerste met biodynamie. Geïnspireerd door Alix en Jean-Marc Roulot, zijn zus en schoonbroer, bezorgde hij zijn witte wijnen fijnere zuren, lengte en precisie. De rode wijnen werden vlijtiger met meer vinificatie en grappe entière en minder koude pre-fermentatie en pigeage. Na vinificatie op vat verlengden ook de élevages. Vastberaden in zijn zoektocht naar karakter, stijl en structuur, sublimeert wijnmaker Brian Sieve de terroirs de Bourgogne.
