Jean-Charles Cazes zit tot over zijn oren in de bouwwerken. Tussendoor vond hij blijkbaar de tijd om een ambitieuze en intense Lynch Bages neer te poten. Deze Grand Vin is voorzien van grote, gebalde densiteit, kernachtig fruit, precieze zuiverheid met lengte. De tanninestructuur zit vrij strak en we hebben het graag wat speelser, maar dit is wel grote Pauillac en een succes van de bovenste plank tegen een bijzonder redelijke prijs. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc en 2% Petit Verdot met een élevage in 75% nieuwe eik. Jean-Charles plaatst de kwaliteit van 2017 tussen 2014 en 2015 en zelfs iets dichter bij deze laatste. De oogst vond plaats tussen 18 september en 5 oktober.

The 2017 Lynch-Bages is aged for 18 months in 75% new French oak. It has a very pure bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, freshly picked wild mint and a touch of iodine. It feels very primal compared to its peers and certainly requires plenty of bottle age. The palate is sweet and generous on the entry thanks to the supple tannin. Moderate acidity, quite opulent for Lynch-Bages but that is reined in towards the finish. I would have liked a little more complexity and delineation overall, but it should drink well for 15 to 20 years. Drink 2023-2040

The 2017 Lynch Bages was picked from 18 September with the young Merlot vines and finishing on 30 September. It was cropped at around 50hl/ha. It is aged in 75% new oak for 18 months. It offers good intensity on the nose, not as precise or as mineral-driven as the 2016 last year, with cedar and pencil shaving infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very refined, a touch of white pepper and cedar with impressive depth on the finish. This will be an approachable Lynch Bages, probably pre-destined to be overshadowed by the magnificent (if nascent) 2016 but it will certainly give 20 to 25 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted four times with consistent notes. Drink 2022-2042.

The 2017 Lynch-Bages is such a pretty and engaging wine; as always, it is a wine of pure and total seduction. Lush, open-knit and very pretty with ripe red and purplish fruit. There is a slight bit of edginess in the tannin that needs to be resolved, but cellaring should take care of that. Drink 2025-2047.

The 2017 Lynch-Bages is a wine of impeccable balance and class. Deep, fleshy and inviting, the 2017 should be ready to deliver pleasure with minimal cellaring. All of the Lynch-Bages signatures come through in a very pretty, deceptively medium-bodied wine loaded with personality. Lynch-Bages is never a huge wine, but like most of his colleagues, proprietor Jean-Michel Cazes opted for especially delicate extractions.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Lynch Bages sashays out of the glass with flamboyant scents of baked blackcurrants, blackberry preserves and mulberries plus touches of lavender, dark chocolate, star anise and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bags of class and finesse with firm, finely-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Drink 2022-2045.

They've had their foot on the extraction pedal here, but the extremely dark fruit has great finesse. It is broad-shouldered and savoury-edged, and each time I tasted this wine it seemed a little richer and more complete, over-delivering for the year. This is going to age extremely well. 2% Petit Verdot makes up the blend. 75% new oak.

The 2017 Lynch Bages is beautifully done and has an upfront, charming, yet concentrated style. Crème de cassis, graphite, crushed rocks, and plenty of spice characteristics give way to a medium to full-bodied Pauillac that has beautifully ripe tannin, solid mid-palate depth, and notable purity of fruit. It’s not massive but just sings for its purity, balance, and expansive texture.

Lynch BagesLynch Bages hoeft geen inleiding. Het is één van die wijnen die jaarlijks uw aankoop waard zijn.
Dit illuster Château bevindt zich ten Westen dan de Route du Vin (D2), onder het saai stadje Pauillac, op het toepasselijk genaamd “Plateau de Bages”. De wijngaard ligt halverwege tussen Lafite en Mouton in het Noorden, en tussen Latour en de twee Pichons in het Zuiden. Lynch Bages is een oud domein, waarvan de geschiedenis teruggaat tot de XVIde Eeuw. Het Château draagt de naam van Thomas Lynch en zijn Ierse familie die het Château bezat in de XVIIde XVIIIde Eeuw. In 1855 werd Lynch Bages gecatalogeerd als Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, terwijl het vandaag eerder aanzien worden als Deuxième of Troisième Grand Cru Classé.
In 1939 kwam deze wijngaard van 100ha in de handen van Jean-Charles Cazes, de overgrootvader van de gelijknamige, actuele directeur. De familie is tot vandaag ook eigenaar van Les Ormes de Pez in Saint Estèphe. Jean-Michel Cazes deed het gehucht van Bages herleven met Café Lavinal en le Comptoir d'Andréa die de namen van zijn twee grootmoeders dragen. Deze hyper moderne “productie-faciliteit” is van de hand van Didi Pei wiens vader de pyramide du Louvre bouwde. Glas en beton imponeren en zijn "le prolongement du geste technique, où la fonctionnalité et l’aisance au travail priment".
Als essentiële Pauillac levert Lynch Bages zeer consistente kwaliteit over de wijnjaren heen en een typische expressie van Cabernet Sauvignon met zwart fruit, potlood en leder. Grote successen werden geboekt in 1952, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961, 1962 en 1966. Sinds de jaren tachtig floreerde Lynch Bages opnieuw met 1989, 1990, 2000, 2009 en 2010 bijvoorbeeld. Sindsdien bevestigt Jean-Charles: The best is yet to come...
CazesJean-Michel Cazes is een bijzonder aimabel man die gestudeerd heeft in de Verenigde Staten en een carrière wist uit te bouwen bij IBM, voor hij naar de Médoc terugkeerde.
