Sinds enkele jaren is Capbern één van de meest intrigerende en toch betaalbare wijnen van Bordeaux. Velen weten het nog niet! Deze rijpe, fijne en exquise bewaarwijn uit Saint Estèphe kan je het best omschrijven als een stunt van Laurent Duffau en Vincent Millet en het team van Calon Ségur. De tranen in het glas, de hyper neus, de heerlijke intro, de succulente tannine, wijzen allemaal in dezelfde richting: dit is heerlijk lekker… en de prijs blijft - zoals ik nog eens onderlijn - uiterst betaalbaar. De tanninestructuur van Capbern 2017 waarborgt zeker 15 jaar + plezier. Haast u dus niet. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc en 3% Petit Verdot op 13.3% vol. De élevage zal 18 maand in beslag nemen, in 60% nieuwe eik. De wijngaard van Capbern is 38 hectare groot (waarvan 29 in productie) en bevindt zicht tussen Phélan Ségur en Meyney.

The 2017 Capbern was bottled at the end April 2019. The wine has a perfumed bouquet with black fruit and light marine aromas, and a touch of brine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin, very classic in style and quintessentially Saint-Estèphe. Moderate in length, there is a slight rawness on the finish. Drink 2020-2028.

The 2017 Capbern was cropped at 43.5hl/ha and matured in 60% new oak. It has a fresh, lively cranberry and blackcurrant-scented bouquet, a little savory in style with hints of Japanese nori (seaweed). The palate is nicely structured with a keen thread of acidity. There is a little compactness on the entry but it gently unfolds towards the finish that exerts subtle grip. It is the precision rather than the power that defines this Capbern and if released at similar prices to previous vintages, could be one of the must-buys of 2017. Drink 2021-2032.

The 2017 Capbern is a very pretty wine to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry, red plum, blood orange, mocha and floral notes are nicely pushed forward in this supple, racy Saint-Estèphe. Dried herbs and a range of floral Cabernet Sauvignon inflections add character. Tasted two times. Drink 2020-2029.

The 2017 Capbern is soft, pliant and inviting. This pretty, gracious Saint-Estèphe has plenty to offer, especially over the near and medium term. Floral notes give lift to the bright red cherry fruit. Soft contours and mid-weight structure add to the wine's immediacy. Tasted two times.

The Merlots and Cabernet Francs suffered a little from the rains of September, but the early season and lack of frost damage helped overcome this, with a normal yield of 43.5hl/ha. Capbern has an ample mid-palate with savoury but fleshy blueberry and blackberry fruits, and mint-edged charcoal - it's well put together. 3% Petit Verdot makes up the blend given here. Ageing for 18 months in 60% new oak. 3.8pH. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036

The 2017 Capbern is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with aromas of baked blackberries, Morello cherries, cassis, fertile loam, unsmoked cigars and sautéed herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and grainy with a good black fruit core and red fruit sparks on the finish. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The final blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Drink 2021-2033.

Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives exuberant red cherries, blackberries and black raspberries on the nose with touches of bay leaves and dusty soil. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and fresh with chewy tannins and an earthy finish.

This large estate has turned out a classic wine in 2017 that just screams of Saint-Estèphe. Checking in as a rough blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it will spend 18 months in 60% new French oak. Textbook Saint Estèphe dark fruits, damp earth, and tobacco leaf all flow to a medium-bodied, rounded, nicely textured wine that has the cooler, perfumed, aromatics style of the vintage, good mid-palate depth, and gorgeous purity of fruit. Classic Bordeaux lovers will dig this.

Calon SégurCalon Ségur is de meest Noordelijk gelegen Grand Cru Classé van de Médoc en één van de mooiste terroirs van Bordeaux. De wijngaard omvat 50 hectare uit één stuk, ten noordwesten van het gehucht Saint Estèphe. Er is een bovenlaag van Graves argilo-sableuses, die werd gedeponeerd door de Gironde, en een kleihoudende onderlaag. 45 hectare zijn beplant met 56% Cabernet Sauvignon 35% Merlot, aangevuld met Cabernet Franc en Petit Verdot. De Cabernet Sauvignon gedijt er prima en omvat dan ook doorgaans ¾ van het assemblage. Densiteit van aanplanting is voor hen primordiaal en ze mikken op 8.000 wijnstokken per hectare. De gemiddelde leeftijd van de wijngaard is slechts 22 jaar in 2017.
We kijken uit op de zilte monding van de Gironde… De ommuurde wijngaard is van gallo-romeinse oorsprong en één van de oudste van de Médoc. In de XVIII° siècle, was le Marquis de Ségur, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur (1697-1755), bijgenaamd "le Prince des Vignes", eigenaar van zowel Calon als Latour et Lafite. Ter herinnering aan zijn spreuk « Je fais du vin à Latour et Lafite mais mon cœur est à Calon » prijkt een hart op het wereldwijd herkend etiket van Calon Ségur. In 1855 werd Calon Ségur geklasseerd als Troisième Grand Cru Classé. In navolging van Hélène de Baritault de Carpia en de familie Capbern Gasqueton die er een eeuw lang de scepter zwaaide, is Suravenir Assurances, een filiaal van de verzekeringsgroep Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, vandaag de meerderheidsaandeelhouder naast de eigenaar van Petrus. Zij lanceerden sinds 2013 een grootschalige renovatie onder leiding van Laurent Dufau terwijl Vincent Millet, een “ancien” van Château Margaux, instaat voor de vinificatie, het vernieuwen van de wijngaard en het uitdrukken van dit historisch terroir. De bouwwerken in de cuvier werden afgewerkt in 2016 en in 2019 werd zelfs de gehele decoratie onder handen genomen. Calon Ségur bereikt vandaag het hoogtepunt van zijn kunnen.
