Dit noemen we volmondig en rijp! 2016 Château de Fonbel is een heerlijke Saint Emilion met allure en panache. Als u hemelse tannine en perfect evenwicht zoekt, bent u hier al gearriveerd. Voor de rest: stralende framboosjes en pruimpjes agrementeren de neus, terwijl de proefervaring in de mond zijdezacht en soepel overkomt met die zuivere aroma’s van rode bessen (en dat vleugje fumé). Ook al lijkt deze charmeur nu al vrij toegankelijk, toch kan u uitgesteld plezier verwachten. Sade zou zingen: “a smooth operator”… De élevage gebeurt voor 30% op eik en voor de rest op cuve. Met een productie van zo’n 100.000 flessen kan de 2016 vele dorstigen lessen, maar de klanten van Vyncke-Daels eerst!

Fonbel ligt hiermee in de lijn van de andere volbloeden in de stal, het zo mooie Moulin Saint Georges en het legendarische Ausone, maar dan wel tegen een vriendenprijs. Bravo aan Pauline Vauthier en haar team!

The 2016 de Fonbel, ostensibly the entry label to the Vauthier portfolio, has an attractive bouquet of blackberry and briar aromas that develop a light estuarine scent with time. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, black fruit and a saline note toward the finish. Enjoy over the next six to eight years. Drink 2020-2026.

The 2016 Fonbel is a blend of 70% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 7% Carmenere picked from 29 September until 18 October at 50 hectoliters per hectare. It has a pretty cranberry and blackcurrant-scented bouquet, quite transparent and terroir-driven with nicely integrated oak (30% aged in new oak). The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a lively and breezy Saint Emilion, not the most complex you will find but full of personality. The freshness suggests that this will drink early, and that Carmenere just gives it something different (although Pauline Vauthier mentioned that she will regraft some of those vines). Drink: 2019-2028.

The 2016 de Fonbel is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry and plum fruit is nicely pushed forward in this succulent, easygoing Saint-Émilion from the Vauthier family. Drink 2018-2024.

The 2016 de Fonbel is soft, supple and quite pretty. Sweet, floral aromatics and gently lilting small red fruits give the 2016 its delicate, gracious personality. A model of understatement and class, the 2016 should drink well pretty much right out of the gate. Today, the 2016 is a touch compact. It will be interesting to see if it fleshes out a bit more during its aging.

Composed of 70% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 7% Carménère, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Fonbel has a classic nose of warm red plums, cigar box and black plums with nuances of redcurrants, Sichuan pepper and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a lot of mid-palate fruit with lovely plush tannins and a long refreshing finish. Drink 2019-2032.

Rich autumnal hedgerow packed with ripe blackberry fruits and overlaid with a fresh, herbal, spicy edge that pulls the mid-palate inwards and allows it to expand on the finish. Expertly done and very enjoyable. 70% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 7% Carmenere. From the Vauthier stable.

De familie Vauthier van Ausone bezit ook Château de Fonbel dat een charmante en vrij intense Saint Emilion levert tegen een vriendenprijs. De wijngaard omvat 16 hectare op een perceel dat er 19 telt ten Zuiden van Saint Emilion onder Ausone en Moulin Saint Georges nabij Monbousquet. Het terroir bestaat uit zanderige klei, graves en zand die gemiddeld zo’n 25 jaar geleden werd aangeplant met 70% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot en -zowaar- 7% Carmenère. Dit laatste curiosum wordt binnenkort misschien hergrift.

Vauthier

Alle krediet voor de heropstanding van het grandioze terroir van Ausone komt toe aan Alain Vauthier. Er zijn geen externe consulenten op Ausone: de assemblages worden gedaan door Pauline Vauthier en Phillippe Baillarguet, de keldermeester sinds 1996. De familie Vauthier bezit 80 hectare in Saint Emilion. Naast Ausone zitten ook de Fonbel, Haut Simard, Simard, Moulin Saint Georges en La Clotte in hun portefeuille.
