Mev. Kirsten is de oudste en meest venerabele Chenin Blanc van Zuid Afrika. Hij werd aangeplant in 1905 in Stellenbosch aan de voet van de Botmanskop. Mev Kirsten 2017 is een wijn als een monument die behoort tot de allergrootste wijnen van de wereld en vergeleken mag worden met de grootsten in de Oude Wereld. Neal Martin (en alle andere proevers) vindt dit één van de beste wijnen die Eben Sadie ooit maakte, en we kennen ondertussen zijn carrière… 10 jaar wachten of flink vooraf decanteren. Dit is waarschijnlijk zijn nieuwe benchmark en de meest opvallende wijn van de line-up dit jaar? Laten we misschien tien jaartjes wachten; flink vooraf decanteren is alvast noodzakelijk. Een college schreef terecht: “It’s powerful with regal refinement, persistence and a long, long finish. An almost old-world nose leads to chalky tannins with texture and fresh focus. A wine of great stature that sits amongst the great wines of the world.” VOLGENS EBEN SADIE The first impression on the nose of the Mev. Kirsten is always a sensation of almost stepping back into time and this 2017 truly lives up to the expectation. The aromatics in this vintage are very diverse and stretch from ripe Granny Smith apples all the way through to heavier, dried apricot characters. The wine is in a tug-of-war between ripe and barely ripe fruit and this tension and diverse character make for a most amazing wine for food pairings. This Mev. Kirsten is in almost two worlds in one. The wine has massive tannins and texture and can stand its ground in any space, but the very bright acidity and finesse in the end make for a soft landing. This vintage requires some years of cellaring prior to opening. IN DE PERS 97 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Augustus 2018) The 2017 Mev. Kirsten is pure Chenin Blanc from the oldest Chenin Blanc in South Africa, planted in 1905. It has a very intense bouquet of yellow stone fruit, chamomile and touches of orange blossom. The harmonious, beautifully defined palate offers perfect acidity and flavors of orange peel, ginger, fynbos, white peach and, again, a hint of chamomile that lingers beautifully in the mouth. This is another stunning white from Eben Sadie, one of the best wines he’s ever made - and he’s made a lot. A billowing nose of potpourri, citrus, stone fruit, earth, ginger and other spice plus a hint of leesy complexity. The palate is super-rich but equally super-fresh, thick-textured yet simultaneously vibrant and so very complex. Utterly compelling. Alcohol: 13%. Tim James – Platter’s A splendid and elegant vintage of this Stellenbosch chenin, from mostly very old vines. There’s richness and mineral finesse, there’s charm and sheer loveliness, and an extraordinary quality of early complexity. Adds to any reason I might want to be alive in ten years’ time – provided I still have a bottle of this to drink.
