Swartland. Tinta Barocca planted in 1930 in the West of Malmesbury.

VOLGENS EBEN SADIE
We had a very strong release in 2016 with this vineyard, but in our opinion the 2017 is even better and a big contender for being the wine of the vintage, simply in view of its overall complexity. The purity and the focus of the Tinta Barocca grape place it in many ways above more fashionable varieties in terms of ultra-quality wine. The general aromatics are still closed up and the wine needs time to unfold, but the general brightness of the fruit and some serious black stone fruit aromatics suggest that much more is to come from this wine - it is currently but revealing only a fraction of its true personality. The lower alcohol, lifted tannin and acidity make for a very savoury finish and a wine that can truly age.

93 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Augustus 2018)
The 2017 Treinspoor is pure Tinta Barocca, which Eben opined is the most exciting grape at the moment, matured for one year in foudres. It has a very well defined bouquet, almost Barolo-like, with touches of dried flowers and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and wonderfully balanced, creating real tension from start to finish and featuring touches of bay leaf and tea leaf toward the poised but sustained finish. Superb. Drink 2019-2032.

From Swartland Tinta Barocca planted in 1974. A very attractive nose with notes of herbs and flowers plus a certain twiginess before cranberry and mulberry while pure fruit, fresh acidity and grippy tannins on the palate make for a super-sexy drop. Alcohol: 13%.

Tim James – Platter’s
Some people always greatly admire this tinta barocca, and Eben has always been especially enthusiastic about it as expressive of Swartland terroir. I never have, though I’ve liked it more each year as it has (in my opinion) gained in finesse and its implacable tannin has been better and better managed. This vintage I do admire, with its dark, brooding quality, its intensity, promising complexity to come. I still think that there’s probably more skeleton than flesh, and a touch of unnecessary sweetness, but maybe ten years in bottle will prove me wrong.

Gezien de lage opbrengsten is deze wijn voortaan enkel verkrijgbaar bij aankoop van evenveel Palladius of Columella.
