Piekenierskloof. "Old Skool" Grenache on granite.

VOLGENS EBEN SADIE
The 2017 vintage in the Olifantsrivier region was also a challenge, but the advantage is the altitude at which this vineyard grows which brings a bit of a reduction of moisture stress. This vintage is an exhibition of bright red fruit like almost under-ripe cherries and strawberry flavours with even aspects of plums picked early. The tannins are softer and more integrated at this early stage in comparison to those of other years and the wine is extremely approachable - all indications are that it will vaporize out of cellars from the word go.

92+ Neal Martin – vinous.com (Augustus 2018)
The 2017 Soldaat is pure Grenache from high-altitude sandstone soils at 708 meters, one of the highest elevations for reds in the Cape. It is fermented in concrete, whole-bunch except for 10% to 15% to get the fermentation going. It has a very pure bouquet of voluminous red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, plus a touch of patisserie in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin, cranberry and light earthy notes that are expressed on the finish. Very fine, though there is some reduction, so don’t hesitate to give this a decant. Drink 2019-2030.

From Piekenierskloof Grenache. An absolutely thrilling nose of cherry, pomegranate, lavender, fynbos, earth and spice. The palate is light but so flavourful – really exquisite fruit definition, zippy acidity and super-fine tannins, the finish very, very long. Provides so much pleasure. Alcohol: 13.5%.

Tim James – Platter’s
“Grenache can be many things”, as Eben pointed out. His is always one of the more serious examples. The wine was rather reduced, but had a lovely perfume, not simple, and with earthy undertones to the red fruit. Very bright overall, with hints of a darker complexity. Notably dry, with balanced firm tannins. Less fruit concentration than usual, I thought, suggesting an earlier-drinking deliciousness (not without an austere element), though I’m sure it will develop well for a few years.

Gezien de lage opbrengsten is deze wijn voortaan enkel verkrijgbaar bij aankoop van evenveel Palladius of Columella.
