Elf cépages (Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Sémillon Gris, Sémillon Blanc, Colombard en Palomino) afkomstig van 17 verschillende percelen. Voor het eerst blijft het alcoholgehalte onder 13,5%vol. De neus is beloftevol met pitvruchten, kruiden en een zin voor rustige concentratie. Er is focus op het jong, bijzonder complex palet. Fijn besnaard Swartland fruit waarbij de zonnige Viognier en Marsanne ingetoomd worden door etherische Palomino en Clairette. Zij geven meer breedte en finesse aan de complexiteit van het geheel. Deze cerebrale witte wijn laat alle puzzelstukjes in elkaar vallen tot één van de fijnste witte wijnen van Zuid Afrika. VOLGENS EBEN SADIE This 2016 vintage of Palladius has the simplicity of minimalistic design with nothing that shouts out and every one of the 11 varietals that drive this wine just seems to be in perfect synchronization. The aromas are a journey of more tropical, ripe fruit aspects going all the way to a very saline and mineral texture. The most exciting aspect of this 2016 vintage is simply the length and the persistence of the tannin on the palate. This wine spends its first year of ageing in clay amphorae and in concrete eggs and then an additional year of ageing of the final blend in big oak casks. The result is incredible stability and the wine leaves one with the clear impression that the Palladius is on the very same level as the Columella and they can truly run together as Signatures. IN DE PERS 93 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Augustus 2018) The 2016 Palladius comes from 17 different vineyards and was fermented in clay amphora and concrete egg and aged for first year, then racked and aged for additional year in old foudres prior to bottling. It has a well defined bouquet, quite neutral in style but blossoming with aeration to reveal hints of lanolin and melted candle wax. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, touches of curry leaf and spice and orange peel. A long tail on the finish of white pepper and sage completes this wonderful Palladius. Drink 2020-2035. 94 Christian Eedes - winemag.co.za (Augustus 2018) Palladius 2016, the white blend from Swartland cellar Sadie Family Wines, seems hard-wrought perhaps on account of the drought that had now set in, but still a riveting wine. A blend of Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Semillon, Semillon Gris, Viognier, Clairette Blanche, Roussanne, Verdelho, Colombard and Palomino, it spends a year in clay amphorae and concrete eggs and then another year in oak casks. A hugely complex and compelling nose with top notes of potpourri and hay before lemon, naartjie, orange, peach, talcum powder, yellow earth and spice. The palate is super-concentrated with driving, quite hard acidity while there is a little phenolic tug on the finish. Currently, it’s amazingly well defined but not exactly charming – you need to be prepared to wait a good few years to get the best out of this.
