Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. 13,7%vol. VOLGENS EBEN SADIE Our Signature Red, the Columella, is aged for 1 year longer in cask and tank prior to bottling, thus being a 2016 vintage and a wine with immense promise. This Columella has a much deeper colour and concentration and is still very compact and in need of obvious ageing, but it is already showing great complexity in that the aromatics are not a singular line, but the coming together of many aspects. The aromas are a combination of bright fresh red fruits which then pass over to the riper black stone fruit. The wine is also very earthy and seems to live on a bed of freshly ploughed earth - and then there is the appearance of much darker graphite aromatics as well. The texture is still super compact and needs time: it is the result of 12 months ageing in barrels (8% new) and thereafter an additional 12 months in old, big oval casks. We bottle directly from the cask and the philosophy is to have minimum impact on the character of the grapes and rather just have the fruit express itself. IN DE PERS 93 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Augustus 2018) The 2016 Columella was matured for 12 months in 10% new oak and then 12 months in old foudres. There is something warm and comforting about the nose: blueberry, crushed violet, a touch of burning embers, almost a damp clay scent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, the Syrah not as pronounced as previous vintages (a policy pursued by Eben as he increased Grenache), and delivering gentle grip toward the slightly peppered finish and long, black-pepper-tinged aftertaste. Very impressive. Drink 2020-2035. 93+ Anthony Muelller – The Wine Advocate Issue # 245 – roberparker.com (Oktober 2019) On the nose, the 2016 Columella reminds me of sitting on the beach eating a bowl of blackberries and dark cherries. The nose has a structural rigidity with a firm mineral presence, which I typically get from the Northern Rhône. Once on the palate, the wine expands in the mouth, unfolding its layers, showing great complexity with a tightly structured grip. Medium-bodied, the complexity continues on to the finish, continually expressing new sensations, ending with fresh cherry skins with a long, taught finish. Very few wines show this elegance and mineral tension, alongside with the dusty freshness and vibrancy. Columella has always had a special place in my heart, and this is a fine example. You'll want to lay this down in your cellar for some time. I have the notion that it is going to age like a king. Impressive! Drink 2020-2040. 94 Christian Eedes - winemag.co.za (Augustus 2018) Columella 2016, as made by Eben Sadie and Paul Jordaan, has the lowest level yet of Syrah, this variety down to 48% and the rest of the blend consisting of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault, Tinta Barocca and Carignan, Sadie saying of Syrah that he increasingly considers it a variety that lacks some depth and complexity. “It makes wines which are either peppery and spicy or spicy and peppery,” he quips. Aromatically, the 2016 has more base than top notes – dark fruit, black olive, scrub, earth and spice. It makes a massive impression in the mouth – great depth of fruit, driving acidity and firm but fine tannins combine to quite stark effect. It’s, not a weighty wine, however, the alcohol at 13.7% the lowest since the maiden vintage 2000. It’s a pretty hardcore drinking experience right now and should probably only really be broached five or so years down the line.
