Grand Village, de ancestrale thuisbasis van de familie Guinaudeau sinds 1650, dient als laboratorium voor experimenten met “sélection massale” vanuit het mythische Lafleur in Pomerol. Deze venerabele Merlot en Bouchet (een oude variant van Cabernet Franc) leveren onwaarschijnlijk fijne Bordeaux Supérieur. De geboden kwaliteit is ongezien op dergelijk prijsniveau zowel in Bordeaux als daarbuiten. 2015 en zeker 2016 zijn fenomenaal lekker en ook in 2018 lijkt de compositie volmaakt. 12 hectare. 78% Merlot geplukt tussen 24 en 28 september en 12% Bouchet geplukt op 5 en 6 oktober. Elevage op 30% nieuwe eik en de rest op barriques van Lafleur en Pensées de Lafleur. 2018 Grand Village is een ware buitenkans voor elke wijnliefhebber. Geniet! Inky red berry fruit, spice, licorice, mocha and dried flowers all meld together in this effortless, juicy Bordeaux Supérieur from the Guinaudeau family. Cabernet Franc signatures are quite prominent in the wine's aromatic profile and structural feel. The 2018 is a jewel of a wine that could very well surprise somewhere down the line. I loved it. Medium in body, gracious and wonderfully nuanced, Grand Village is fabulous in 2018. Sweet floral notes and a burst of Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) savoriness punctuate the finish. Once again, Grand Village is a fabulous wine in its peer group, and frankly, beyond. A reduction of the vineyard from 15 hectares to 12, done to focus on just the best parcels, is starting to pay handsome dividends. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it comes galloping out of the glass with powerful notes of baked plums, mulberries and stewed black cherries, plus hints of tar, licorice, garrigue and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate explodes with bombastic black fruits and an exciting burst of freshness, framed by ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long and earthy. Drink 2023-2038. 90-93 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (April 2019) The 2018 Grand Village is composed of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc; the Merlot was harvested September 24-28 and the Cabernet Franc was harvested October 5-6. Deep garnet-purple colored, it struts out of the glass with gregarious scents of wild blueberries, baked plums and warm blackcurrants with hints of chocolate-covered cherries, dusty soil, garrigue and charcuterie. Full-bodied and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate features tons of black and blue fruit flavors with a firm, chewy frame and earthy finish. 90 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Grand Village has undergone a small reorganization in terms of its grape varieties (see my tasting note from barrel). It has a refined bouquet that opens over the course of a couple of hours, the Cabernet Franc expressive, lending subtle peppery scents to aromatics that convey a sense of classicism, something old-school, which I do not write pejoratively. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and peppery in style, the crunchy black fruit now laced with a little tobacco. There’s a lovely tang of cracked black pepper on the finish that lingers for 30 seconds. A superb Grand Village that should give up to a decade’s drinking pleasure. Drink 2022-2032. 89-91 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Oktober 2019) The 2018 Grand Village comes from what is now a 12- instead of 15-hectare vineyard, since three hectares of Merlot have been uprooted and will be regrafted to sélection massale Cabernet Franc. The tightly focused, quite masculine bouquet feels curiously like an old-school Right Bank with a dab of Malbec in it. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannin and quite peppery in style; hints of black tar emerge toward the structured finish. Full of freshness and showing a less rustic texture than previous vintages, this is an excellent Grand Village. “A new opening,” said Baptiste Guinaudeau. I would agree. In the family for centuries, it’s only been since 2000 that first Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau and now son Baptiste and daughter-in-law Julie have been in charge of the winemaking, employing their legendary attention to detail, with viticulture adapted not just to each plot but each plant. They also have their grapevine nursery for massal selction of vines up here. The red is a Bordeaux Supérieur, although the grapes are almost in Fronsac (located in the tiny village of Mouillac), and in most vintages is a blend of more than 90% Merlot with the rest Cabernet Franc, vinified in cement with around 30% new oak barrels (some from Château Lafleur, or used here before heading over to Lafleur). Plummy rich fruits, well balanced, more than punches above its weight price wise. The white wines Grand Village Blanc and especially Les Champs Libre (although this last one may be creeping above my price ceiling for this list) are also seriously stunning.
