A proposal you can’t refuse. Het is nochtans allerminst mafieus: krokant fruit, stralende tannine, precieze vinificatie en zelfs lengte en jaren bewaarpotentieel. Dit alles tegen een kleine prijs alsof het een fluitje van een cent was. Deze onweerstaanbare Saintem past in elk budget, en is nuttig op elke gelegenheid. Het is een no-brainer zoals Grand Village. Helemaal “Yummy!” Denis Durantou, de eigenaar van l’Eglise Clinet, maakt Saintem op een perceel van 9 hectare met 100% Merlot te Saint Etienne de Lisse. De oogst vond plaats tussen 29 september en 9 oktober. 14,50%vol. De élevage gebeurt in 30% nieuwe eik. It often needs quite a bit of time to emerge, as is the case with the 2018, which only shows its true potential with several hours of air. Time brings out attractive floral and spice accents to play off the dark red/purplish fruit. Saintayme is a wine of gravitas and power. A few more years should help the tannins soften. Drink 2026-2043. 89-92 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (April 2019) Denis Durantou's 2018 Saintayme is especially fine in 2018. Bright, floral and energetic, Saintayme really shines. In fact, I can't remember a recent vintage with this much finesse. The tannins need time to soften, but there is plenty of radiant fruit waiting to emerge. I won't be surprised if the finished wine is even better than this note suggests. Deep garnet-purple in color, it rocks up with ready-for-business scents of blackberry preserves, baked plums and boysenberries, plus touches of violets, camphor, charcoal and underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate offers expressive black fruit and earthy layers, supported by soft tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing savory. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts from the glass with plum preserves, crushed blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of lavender, unsmoked cigar and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals beautiful freshness and elegance with soft tannins and loads of mineral sparks on the finish. 89-92 James Molesworth – winespectator.com (April 2019) 90-92 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (April 2019) From the team of Denis Durantou, the 2018 Saintayme (100% Merlot brought up in 30% new oak) is a total charmer that savvy readers should snatch up. Offering full-bodied notes of black raspberries, kirsch, and spice box, it has silky tannins, a terrific sense of elegance and purity, and outstanding length. Drink it on release and over the following decade. 88-90 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Oktober 2019) The 2018 Saintayme was picked 29 September to 9 October, and matured in 30% new oak. It has a fragrant red cherry and crushed strawberry scented bouquet with light floral notes, peony and iris. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good substance and a cedar-tinged, pencil-lead finish. Very fine. De kleine productie van zijn Pomerol "extraordinaire" Eglise Clinet is wereldwijd gegeerd.Zijn talent bewees hij bovendien in de betaalbare wijnen die hij daarnaast maakte: van de achterdeur van l’Eglise Clinet zag Denis zijn wijngaarden van Les Cruzelles en La Chenade (Lalande de Pomerol). Verderop vinden we Saintayme (Saint Emilion) en Montlandrie (Castillon). Ze zijn allemaal heerlijk, geloofwaardig en overtuigend. Saintayme is een perceel van 35 jaar oude Merlots op klei en graves in Saint Etienne de Lisse binnen de appellatie Saint Emilion. In Lalande de Pomerol worden Les Cruzelles en La Chenade gemaakt naargelang de bodemsamenstelling en de ouderdom van de wijnstokken. De jonge wijnstokken van La Chenade (gelegen op graves) verleiden terwijl we de oudere wijnstokken van Les Cruzelles op klei en graves bodems kunnen vergelijken we goede Pomerols. Sinds de aankoop in 2000 zette Denis de wijngaard maniacaal naar zijn hand. Montlandrie in Castillon is de recentste aankoop: de 11 hectare klei en kalkgronden zijn beplant met 25 jaar oude wijnstokken (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc of 70%, 25% en 5% Cabernet Sauvignon vanaf 2016). Buiten de erkende appellaties om, behoren deze wijnen tot de beste van Bordeaux. De tweede wijn van Eglise Clinet, La Petite Eglise, is zeldzaam met een jaarlijks productie beperkt tot zo'n 7.000 flesjes. Het levenswerk van Denis Durantou wordt verdergezet door zijn drie dochters. « Je veux continuer à faire honneur au travail de mon père », zegt Noémie die al 4 jaar vinifieert samen met Olivier Gautrat, al 20 jaar maître de chai. « À Pomerol, Je suis chez moi. J’y ai grandi, j’allais à l’école du village, je jouais dans le chai et j’ai le souvenir des odeurs… ». Constance zorgt voor 400 olijfbomen en truffeleiken. Alix volgt vanuit Parijs en is gepassioneerd door kunst en Japanse cultuur. Hun mama, kunstenares Marie Reilhac neemt deel aan de assemblages. Zeventig jaar oude Cabernet Franc wijnstokken gedijen op het perfect gedraineerd terroir van argilo-graveleux. Eglise Clinet is één van de grootste wijnen die er zijn. Hun Les Cruzelles in Lalande-de-Pomerol en Montlandrie in Castillon zijn superwijnen en blijven héél toegankelijk. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
