Pauline Vauthier van Ausone is een bijzonder getalenteerd wijnmaker. Ook de betaalbare Fonbel bewijst het. Mildiou herleidde nochtans de potentiële oogst met 30%. Maakt dit de resulterende wijn nog intenser? Fonbel is diep robijnrood gekleurd met peperige, florale toetsen in de neus, en heerlijke fruitigheid die nu eens rood (kersjes), dan weer zwart (bosbessen) getint is. De vriendelijke tannines weten zich te gedragen. De finale houdt aan… Dit is lekker en je voelt dat haar goede naam op het spel staat! Het assemblage is opvallend met 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon en zowaar 10% zeldzame Carmenere. Château de Fonbel strekt zich uit over 16 hectare ten Zuiden van Saint Emilion. De vinificatie gebeurt voor 30% op barrique en voor de overige 70% op inox cuve. Dit is de vriendenprijs in de Ausone-stal. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, new leather and licorice all come together in an understated, open-knit Saint-Émilion that offers tons of immediacy and pleasure. Drink 2022-2033. 89-92 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (April 2019) The 2015 de Fonbel is a gorgeous entry-level wine in the Vauthier family's range. Plush, succulent and inviting, the 2018 radiates with striking fruit density. Soft curves and silky tannins give the wine's its pure appeal. Sweet floral and spiced notes add complexity, but more than anything else, Fonbel stands out for its glorious fruit and allure. Exotic spice and black pepper notes from the Carmenère are laced into the finish I loved it. 91-92 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (April 2019) A juicy and rich young wine with lots of fruit and density. The medium-bodied palate is delicately styled, with a lively line of freshness and chewy tannins to support the fresh red and black fruit flavors, finishing with an herbal lift. Drink 2022-2032. 91-93 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (April 2019) Made up of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Carménère, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Fonbel gives up spicy notes of Sichuan pepper, cinnamon stick, cloves and fenugreek with a core of warm red and black cherries, mulberries and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has wonderful freshness and a soft, creamy texture supporting the vibrant red and black fruit preserves flavors, finishing with a peppery lift. 92-94 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (April 2019) A blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Carménère, the 2018 Château De Fonbel is a juicy, medium to full-bodied, elegant Saint-Émilion that has seriously good notes of black cherries, black raspberries, violets, and spice. It shows the ripe, sexy style of the vintage, but its purity of fruit and polished tannins set it apart. De wijngaard omvat 16 hectare op een perceel dat er 19 telt ten Zuiden van Saint Emilion onder Ausone en Moulin Saint Georges nabij Monbousquet. Het terroir bestaat uit zanderige klei, graves en zand die gemiddeld zo’n 25 jaar geleden werd aangeplant met 70% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot en -zowaar- 7% Carmenère. Dit laatste curiosum wordt binnenkort misschien hergrift. VauthierAlle krediet voor de heropstanding van het grandioze terroir van Ausone komt toe aan Alain Vauthier. Er zijn geen externe consulenten op Ausone: de assemblages worden gedaan door Pauline Vauthier en Phillippe Baillarguet, de keldermeester sinds 1996. De familie Vauthier bezit 80 hectare in Saint Emilion.
