Als je Gloria kent, herken je hem in een oogwenk: tegelijk gourmand en verfijnd. We trappen een open deur in als we zeggen dat hij de “glorie” van Saint Julien biedt. De 2018 is een wijn die om een goed gesprek vraagt. De kleur is diep donker en de zachte tongval vertoont présence. Ceder, kruiden, potloodschilfers, cassis verraden de meerderheid aan Cabernet Sauvignon in het assemblage (60%). De getoaste eiktoetsen zijn al mooi versmolten. Soepel fruit bouwt gestaag op, met rijpe en zijdezachte tannine die sappige kersjes en pruimpjes omgeven. Deze succulente, opulente Gloria hoort thuis in elke goede wijnkelder. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot en 3% Cabernet Franc op een rendement van 46hl/ha en 40hl/ha na selectie en saignée. Ze voorzien een élevage van 14 maand op 40% nieuwe eik van tien tonneliers. 65% van de 225.000 te bottelen flessen worden Grand Vin. 14,1%vol. Eric Boissenot is er consulent. IN DE PERS 93 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Gloria has a wonderful, harmonious bouquet of copious blackberry, briary, cedar and tobacco notes that just feels so... effortless. The very harmonious palate offers pure black fruit laced with graphite. Displaying moderate weight and fine acidity, and quite linear and focused on the finish, this is a very classy Gloria that may warrant a higher score down the line. Drink 2024-2050. 92-94 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Oktober 2019) The 2018 Gloria is tight at first but soon finds its voice with attractive blackberry, raspberry and light cedar/tobacco aromas. The oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is fresh and focused on the entry, classic in style with tobacco and cedar quite vocal towards the fresh and linear finish. This is a stylish, cerebral Gloria that I suspect will age with style and grace. Excellent. Drink 2024-2050. 93 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Gloria has turned out beautifully. Medium in body, with terrific balance and tons of class, Gloria will especially appeal to readers in search of a wine that is not super-exuberant, as so many 2018s are. Bright floral notes, blood orange and red berry fruit all run through this wonderfully expressive Saint-Julien. Give the tannins at least a few years to soften. The 2018 is a bit more linear than other recent vintages (such as the 2016) but it nevertheless has a lot to offer. Bright red cherry, cedar, tobacco, spice and floral notes pulse with tremendous energy. The tannins need a few years in bottle to unwind, but there is so much to look forward to. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Framed and focused. 93 Jane Anson – decanter.com (April 2019) Gloria is fast becoming one of the most exciting insider wines of the entire Bordeaux region, and that rare species of a non-classified St-Julien. The fruit here is brambly, textured and autumnal, and again the alcohol seems generous but balanced, with plenty of St-Julien finesse. It has a feeling of not needing to go too far to convince anyone. This is some austerity here but there's a bounce to the tannins through the mid-palate, while the alcohol is clearly there but not dominant, helped I would expect by relatively generous yields of 46hl/ha. Very good quality. 5% Cabernet Franc makes up the blend. 50% new oak. Drinking Window 2027 - 2040. 92 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Gloria is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged for approximately 14 months in oak barriques, 40% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it sashays out of the glass with flamboyant notes of kirsch, black raspberries and cassis, plus hints of potpourri, unsmoked cigars and star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a good amount of juicy black and red fruit flavors, backed up by slightly chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing spicy. Drink 2022-2040. 92-94 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (April 2019) The 2018 Gloria is deep garnet-purple colored and gives up expressive notions of warm red and black currants, black cherries and boysenberries with hints of spice cake, cedar chest, pencil lead and menthol. Full-bodied with a firm texture of ripe, grainy tannins, it has a lively line cutting through the dense, savory layers, finishing on a lingering spicy note. The blend is currently 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated aging is for 14 months in oak barriques, 40% new. 93-96 James Molesworth – winespectator.com (April 2019) There's lots here, with raspberry, blackberry, currant and blueberry fruit all playing a role, along with lively briar and licorice snap notes. An apple wood frame keeps the elements in line. 94 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (Maart 2021) 92-94 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (April 2019) Readers looking for an estate on the uptick need to check out the 2018 Château Gloria, which is up with the finest vintages I’ve tasted from this Saint-Julien estate. Deeply colored with terrific cassis and blackberry fruits as well as ample leafy herbs and sappy flower notes, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, has polished, elegant tannins, and a great finish. It’s a juicy, fruit-forward effort with good concentration and lots of class. Drink it over the coming 25 years or more. The blend is currently 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, from a selection of 65% of the total production, that’s currently resting in 40% new French oak. GloriaGloria legt telkens de lat hoger. Vooral in de grote recente wijnjaren zoals 2009 en 2010, 2016 en 2018 komt Gloria op bijzonder imposante manier uit de hoek. Gloria werd niet geklasseerd in 1855 (en is ook geen Cru Bourgeois) daar het nog maar sinds 1942 bestaat onder impuls van Henri Martin. Hij was burgemeester van Saint Julien, tonnerlier en ooit régisseur van Latour. Hij bracht verschillende percelen samen in een entiteit van 44ha door ze aan te kopen van naburige Crus Classés zoals Gruaud Larose, Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton, Lagrange en Ducru Beaucaillou. Besluit: Gloria staat jaarlijks op het niveau van een Grand Cru Classé maar blijft blinken aan een vriendenprijs!... De (ondertussen) 50 hectare werden beplant tegen 10.000 wijnstokken per hectare op Graves gunziennes bovenop keien en zanderige klei. We vinden er 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 5% Petit Verdot. Gloria de meest aantrekkelijk geprijsde, grote Saint Julien met ampleur, richesse et vivacité. Aujourd’hui, d’une superficie de 44 hectares, le vignoble du Château Gloria se répartit sur trois zones, au centre de Beychevelle, à l’ouest et au nord de l’appellation, à la limite de l’aire d’appellation Pauillac. Sur des terroirs de graves günziennes, parmi les meilleurs de l’appellation, au sous-sol de graves argilo-sabloneuses, l’encépagement est très classique avec 65 % de cabernet sauvignon, 25 % de merlot, 5 % de cabernet franc et 5 % de petit verdot. Gloria a d’ailleurs été l’un des premiers à croire au petit verdot, un très bon cépage probablement cultivé dans le Médoc longtemps avant le cabernet sauvignon. Il apporte aux assemblages sa couleur ainsi qu’un supplément de richesse aromatique, tannique et alcoolique. Avec des pieds de vigne âgés de 80 ans et d’autres de 30 ans, l’âge moyen de la vigne se situe autour de 45 ans. Sa situation est remarquable et soigneusement entretenue. Le vignoble est taillé en guyot double. Son rendement à l’hectare affiche une moyenne de 45 hectolitres pour une densité de plantation de 10 000 pieds à l’hectare. Als schoonzoon van Henri Martin, is Jean-Louis Triaud verantwoordelijk voor deze vermaarde Saint Juliens, maar was eerder ook betrokken (in betere tijden) bij de voetballers van “les Girondins de Bordeaux”!
