Léoville Barton 2018 is grandioos in proportie en compositie. De crescendo in de proefervaring overwelmt met stamina en majesteit, maar mondwaterende tannine, helderheid van fruit en fraîcheur houden het vlijtig. Een eerlijke prijs maakt hiervan een onweerstaanbaar aanbod… De kleur is diep purper tot inktzwart naarmate we het centrum van het glas bereiken. De neus goochelt met vlierbessen, truffels en kleine, wilde bosbessen. De attaque is zacht en intens; majesteit in tannine straalt van begin tot eind. Met réserve, présence et tension, rolt krokant zwart fruit over de tong met gepolijste indrukken van krijt, ceder en vanille. De belofte in de finale is schitterend. Damien en Mélanie Sartorius-Barton plaatsen 2018 op gelijke hoogte als 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2016. De pers gaat nog verder: dit is de hoogst scorende Léoville Barton ooit in primeur, met zelfs 96-99 in Wine Spectator. Barton kon alle uitdagingen van het wijnjaar naar zijn hand zetten. Rijpheid was er zowiezo maar het genie ligt in de fraîcheur. We verklaren dit met de 82% Cabernet Sauvignon die het assemblage aanvoert en het alcoholgehalte beperkt tot 14,03%vol. Deze jonge 2018 lijkt zéér toegankelijk maar Léoville Barton blijft zijn eigen zichzelf: de essentiële bewaarwijn. IN DE PERS 96 Antonio Galloni - vinous.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Léoville-Barton is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, menthol, licorice and cloves race out of the glass. The 2018 marries the natural opulence of the year with a pretty classic sense of structure, making for one of the more compelling wines of the year. I would give this a good decade in the cellar. Graphite, gravel, crème de cassis, mint, violet, spice and exotic spices are some of the many notes that infuse this stunningly beautiful unctuous Saint-Julien. In 2018 Léoville-Barton has an extra dimension of volume and resonance, yet it never loses its super-classic mid-weight structure and regal bearing. Full-bodied and muscular with so much intensity and density. Extremely muscular. You don't see all the mechanisms, but you know they are there. This is going to age exceptionally well, but there's a freshness and juiciness to the structure already that suggests it's going to be great fun to drink along the way. It has glass-staining extraction, with plenty of cassis, graphite and liquorice flavours - everything's turned up high. 60% new oak. Drinking Window 2027 - 2042 94+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (Maart 2021) Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Léoville Barton needs a little swirling to coax out delicate notions of fresh blackberries, mulberries and cassis, plus touches of pencil shavings, clove oil, charcoal and black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a great intensity of earth and mineral-laced black fruit flavors, supported by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. Give it a good 4-5 years in bottle and drink it over the next 20 years+. Drink 2025-2045. 94-96 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – roberparker.com (April 2019) Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Léoville Barton simply sings of crushed black cherries, blackcurrant cordial and wild blueberries with touches of violets, dark chocolate, allspice and cardamom with a waft of stewed tea. Full-bodied, rich and decadently fruited in the mouth, the generous fruit has a solid structure of firm, ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and layered. 96-99 James Molesworth – winespectator.com (April 2019) A stunner, showing a great degree of purity, with long flavors of cassis, plum and blackberry preserves, seamlessly integrated with the graphite structure. It’s a classic, structured, backward wine based on 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot that’s still resting in 60% new French oak. While never the most showy or opulent, this team always fashions a fresh, focused, incredibly age-worthy wine, and the 2018 follows suit, revealing a vivid purple color, notes of crème de cassis, crushed violets, salty minerality, and lead pencil shaving-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and incredibly elegant on the palate, it has building tannins, flawless balance, and integrated acidity, all making for a wine that’s going to demand upwards of a decade of bottle age yet keep for 40 years or more. The tannin quality here is exceptional and this is a wine you won’t regret having in the cellar. 94 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Maart 2021) The 2018 Léoville Barton has a classy bouquet, a little timid at first, that just requires a few swirls to unleash blackberry and blueberry fruit and hints of crushed violet and desiccated orange peel. It blossoms wonderfully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, wonderful depth and balance, and quite citric toward the finish, delivering plenty of energy. An excellent Léoville Barton whose sheer drinkability will please many, though I would afford it 4–6 years in bottle. Drink 2024-2045. 94-96 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Oktober 2019) The 2018 Léoville Barton was picked from 21 September until 6 October and then matured in 60% new oak. It has a ripe and generous bouquet with blackcurrants, blueberry, crushed violets that might cheekily be described as Langoa-plus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. This has firm grip, one of the most structured Léoville-Bartons that I have encountered with a slightly lactic finish. Where this succeeds is in the alcohol that is kept under control (14.03%) so that there is no warmth and delineation is upheld throughout. Superb. Superbly long and with great energy and loveliness this will be a long-lived style which will open incrementally as opposed to firing on all cylinders from the off. Dit is het Château in de Médoc die al het langst in handen is van één en dezelfde familie: de Bartons. De 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, heraangeplant in de jaren 1980, domineert van het assemblage en wordt aangevuld met 23% Merlot en 3% Cabernet Franc. De wijngaard van 51 hectare is aangeplant met een densiteit van 9.100 wijnstokken per hectare; ze zijn gemiddeld 38 jaar oud in 2018. Een ruime jaarlijkse productie van 20.000 kisten komt zijn populariteit ten goede. La Réserve de Léoville Barton is zijn voortreffelijke tweede wijn. BartonAnthony Barton was één van de meest gerespecteerde persoonlijkheden in de Médoc. Hij overleed in 2022 en was de achtste generatie van de familie achter Léoville Barton en Langoa Barton in Saint Julien en inmiddels ook Mauvesin Barton in Moulis en Médoc. De familie Barton is een Engelse familie die in Ierland aankwam in de XVIIde Eeuw. In 1722 kwam zeevaarder Thomas Barton zich vestigen in Bordeaux om er wijn te exporteren naar Ierland, toen een even grote afzetmarkt als Engeland. Zijn kleinzoon Hugh kocht in 1821 Langoa en in 1826 zelfs een kwart van het Château de Léoville van de Marquis de las Cases (oorspronkelijk vormden las Cases, Poyferré en Barton één geheel). De negende en tiende generaties tekenen nog altijd present met dochter Lilian en kleinzoon Damien. Hun lijfspreuk klinkt toepasselijk: “Fide et Fortitudine”. De familie is op vandaag de oudste familie van Château-eigenaars in de Médoc. |
