VOLGENS EBEN SADIE
The Skurfberg up in the Clanwilliam mountains was definitely the area most affected by the drought. Not only did these vineyards receive less rain, but with half the normal rainfall and the extremely well-drained, decomposed Table Mountain sandstone soils the combination was just suicidal. We only managed to pick 30% of the grapeswe collect in a normal year. The wine is unbelievably harmonious and poised and it actually does not show much of the drought other than a slightly lower alcohol level and a higher acidity than normal – we picked earlier to try and save as much of the vine reserves as we could. Drinking this wine is the closest we’ll probably get to walking on crystal.

The 2018 Skurfberg, Sadie’s Chenin Blanc from Olifantsrivier, has a very neutral, pressed flower bouquet that is much more backward than the other crus. The well-balanced palate presents veins of marmalade and orange peel, wonderful tension and superb precision on the finish. Though backward at the moment, this will certainly repay cellaring. Drink 2022-2045.

Now coming from Olifant's River, the 2018 Old Vine Series Skurfberg is Chenin Blanc at its finest. The nose opens with the precision and focus to be one of South Africa's greatest bottles of Chenin Blanc, showcasing pineapple with a rocky minerality, that is tightly wrapped with citrus and tropical fruits aromas. The palate is just ripe, with golden apples and freshly squeezed lemon peel with an undercurrent of pleasing waxy bitterness. This wine has length, is well-balanced with high complexity and I felt myself do a double take, eagerly going back for a second sip. The medium-bodied wine ends with a long dusty, thought-provoking finish. Drink 2019-2035.

Tim James – winemag.co.za (Juli 2019)
These Clanwilliam vineyards were hardest hit – 30-40% of normal vintage. Picked early. More forward Chenin nose – dried peach, thatch. Yet some good substance, all fresh, yet lightness of texture and fruit. Nice grip. Lovely flavours though. More charming in youth than Skerpioen.
