VOLGENS EBEN SADIE
Over the past number of years the Treinspoor has in many ways become one of our most rewarding wines, for it has gone through an incredible process of refinement. The biggest attraction with Tinta Barroca is the fact that it can also produce super elegant aromas and purity, but with much more layering of tannins and texture on the palate. It is generally the most serious of the Old Vine reds that we bottle and the 2018 is not any different. However, this is in many ways the most balanced and harmonious wine we have bottled from this vineyard. The yield, unfortunately, was very small.

The 2018 Treinspoor is pure Tinta Barocca from Swartland aged in old foudres. Its perfumed bouquet is much more floral than the Pofadder, with incense and pressed iris flower infusing the red berry fruit, and displays wonderful energy and precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a crisp, quite saline finish that lingers long in the mouth. I noticed it tightening up in the glass, and maybe this will shut down for a while, so drink soon or cellar for several years. Drink 2023-2045.

The 2018 Old Vine Series Treinspoor made form Tinta Barocca begins quietly brooding in the glass with a serious nose that is dark-fruited. On the palate, the wine has an unrelenting tannic edge with a firm mineral grip that grabs you by the gum line and doesn't let go. The tannic expression echoes of Nebbiolo from Northern Italy. Clearly it will take years to settle down, or you are going to need carpaccio. Full-bodied and tightly mineral on the finish, the wine is going to need five to seven years before you can properly enjoy this bottle by itself. Drink 2024-2038.

Swartland tinta barocca. Very small yield. Richer, darker, full aromas, quite complex already. Tannins big, but really well integrated and succulent. Lovely depth of fruit. 15% destemmed, in big old oak. Most attractively savoury. (I’ve grown to enjoy this wine more each year as the tannin management has improved; but maybe I was wrong to not much care for earlier vintages; I’m told they have matured very well.)
