VOLGENS EBEN SADIE
For no other reason than the higher altitude, the 2018 Soldaat actually held up quite well in comparison with many other vineyards. This year the fruit is extremely restrained and bright: almost like barely ripe pomegranates and cherry flavours. The bright red fruit is very much underplayed with an earthy and meaty mouth feel and it is clearly one of those vintages that, in time, will develop forest floor characters. Currently this wine is very restrained.

IN DE PERS

95 Neal Martin – vinous.com (November 2019)
The 2018 Soldaat is pure Grenache Noir from Piekenierskloof. It offers earthy red berry fruit on the nose, touches of wild heather and fynbos emerging with time and lending wonderful complexity. The palate is well balanced with a fleshy opening. There are layers of vibrant red cherry and strawberry fruit laced with white pepper and sage toward the persistent finish. Yet there is an approachability to this Soldaat that means it will be difficult to resist in its youth. Drink 2021-2042.

89+ Anthony Muelller – The Wine Advocate Issue # 245 – roberparker.com (Oktober 2019)
An unwooded expression of Grenache, the 2018 Old Vine Series Soldaat begins with a light floral nose with a dusty red-fruited core. Immediately on the palate, there's a tight mineral grip, that almost robs the elegance and enjoyment away from the fruit. Fresh and firm, the mineral backbone drives through the mid-palate ending with a long and pure expression that is medium-bodied, with slightly chalky tannins, leaving me wanting just a bit less rigidity. This will mellow in time. Drink 2021-2035.

Tim James – winemag.co.za (Juli 2019)
Piekenierskloof grenache. Picked at usual ripeness but a small crop.  Only concrete maturation.  Subtle dark, spiced perfume. Bright red fruit. Very decent acidity. Depth of flavour. Very precise, clean. Fresh. Young and tight, touch of rawness, but already delectable. Slightly austere purity.
