VOLGENS EBEN SADIE
Palladius 2017 displays the magnitude of layers that is to be expected from a blend of 11 varietals across 17 vineyards, but unlike the previous two vintages there are more fresh fruit flavours and the stone fruit and peach skin aromas almost suggest a cooler vintage… this is in part the result of us picking slightly earlier than usual to try and save plant reserves for the vines to deal with the drought. This wine normally has more tropical aromas, but this year there is none of that to be found. Some white cassis and green apple skin make up a very restrained version with salty, mineral and slight honey and lime undertones.

IN DE PERS

93 Neal Martin – vinous.com (November 2019)
The 2017 Palladius is matured in a mixture of concrete and clay. It gradually unfurls with brioche, praline and honeysuckle aromas, wonderfully focused and precise. The well-balanced palate delivers orange zest and tangerine on the entry. The acidity is very well judged and there is real brightness and tension toward the finish. Is it the most complex Palladius Sadie has ever made? Maybe not, but it is still a beautiful wine. Drink 2021-2040.

93+ Anthony Muelller – The Wine Advocate Issue # 245 – roberparker.com (Oktober 2019)
A gentle giant with a quiet nose that is shy yet possesses a pure minerality to the heart of its core, the 2017 Palladius has expressive and dusty citrus tones, with a wet river rock stoniness. The palate is balanced with a firm acidic edge and focus that is truly mindboggling. Medium-bodied with a long saline finish, the perplexing expression lingers with lemon oil, bee pollen and fine chalky powder. The acidity and balance in this wine are going to ensure that it possesses the ability to live on for decades in your cellar. Be patient. It's good now but it will get better in time. Drink 2019-2042.

Tim James – winemag.co.za (Juli 2019)
Palladius seems to me to have changed over the years perhaps even more than Columella, and its gains in freshness, lower alcohol and greater dryness perhaps culminate in the refined, fresh, delicate power, great balance and length of 2017 (picked a little earlier than previously):  “Just enough of everything, not too much of anything”, I concluded at this tasting. This vintage comes from 17 vineyards and 11 varieties; fermentation and initial maturation only in concrete and clay, then it’s blended into big oak casks, for settling.

Sadie

The Swartland Independent Producers veranderen Zuid Afrika als wijnland.
