Swartland. Tinta Barocca planted in 1974, 4km to the West of Malmesbury. Deze wijngaard werd aangeplant in 1974 nabij een oude spoorweg ten Westen van Malmesbury, op de weg naar Darling. Historisch gezien gedijde Tinta Barocca (of Tinta Das Baroccas zoals het vroeger heette) in Swartland. De bodem is rijk aan graniet en zandgesteente (of "Table Mountain Sandstone"). Zijn diepe kleur en stevige aciditeit zorgde voor een dankbare toevoeging aan menig assemblage. Nu een rijpere leeftijd bereikt is, verdient deze Tinta Barocca een eigen botteling. Dit is zoveel meer beklijvend dan de varianten uit de Douro en vertoont bovendien intrigerende gelijkenissen met Barolo. Van Douro tot Barolo zegt u? Het lijkt een stretch, maar alles wordt duidelijk wanneer de kurk eraf gaat. Wanneer mag dit gebeuren? Blijf er nog enige tijd op zitten, desondanks de vlijtige charme van deze verschijning. VOLGENS EBEN SADIE It is no secret that we have a very high regard for the Tinta Barocca grape and that is with good reason. Year after year it is one of the mono-varietals that seriously translates “terroir” in the Swartland. We needed a few years to learn to read the extraction points and grape growing patterns of the varietal and the vineyards are in better equilibrium now. Any fan of Piedmont wines will have a greater attraction to this wine for the 2019 Treinspoor is a dark horse that needs time in the bottle and the benefit of patience. The fruit on this vintage is pretty and it is a more drinkable early version, but I urge buyers to give it the benefit of time. IN DE PERS 93 Neal Martin - vinous.com (April 2021) The 2019 Treinspoor, 80% whole-cluster Tinta Barocca matured in old foudre, presents a crisp, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, briar and wild fennel scents, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Taut and crisp, almost pixelated in style, leading to a sensual, mulberry-tinged finish. Very elegant and refined. Drink 2022-2038. Tim James - winemag.co.za (Augustus 2020) As I say each year (and always believe it), this Swartland Tinta Barocca continually improves, notably in terms of the integration of its (ever less extreme) tannin structure with the freshness and the fruit. (But I’m also frequently told how splendidly the very tannic earlier vintages matured; this one should do at lest as well, I reckon.) This year the balance seems to me very good, though it still needs more time than the other reds in the range. It’s full of subtle, deep and suggestive character, with restrained charm.
