Riebeek. Cinsaut on slate. Deze 100% Cinsaut siert de westelijke, leistenen flank van de Kasteelberg in Swartland, al meer dan een halve eeuw lang. Volgens Eben Sadie gedijt Cinsaut perfect in Zuid Afrika; we geven hem geen ongelijk! Deze Pofadder brengt Pinot Noir in gedachten: even stevig als zacht met vibrante zuren. Na strenge selectie (28hl/ha) wordt er in een open vat gevinifieerd met pigeage tweemaal per dag. In 2019 weerstond Pofadder beter aan de droogte dan een jaar eerder. De wijngaard werd ook rijper geplukt. Het aromatisch palet is "zoveel meer dan fruitig” en de gebalanceerde tongval maakt hem toegankelijker. Gun deze Pofadder 2018 nog wat rust en vlieg er dan in. Veel plezier! VOLGENS EBEN SADIE In 2018 we picked the Cinsaut grapes in the Pofadder vineyard quite early on the account of the drought but in 2019 the vineyard looked much more buffered against the drought and we picked riper, closer to the ripening average we have come to in the past. The wine immediately responded by just having a more complex dynamic. The aromas of the 2019 Pofadder are some of the most perfumed to date and the aromatic design is more complex and not just running on a singular red fruit line. The mouthfeel is in greater equilibrium than ever before. The 2019 is quite open and will require less cellaring than 2018 and 2017. IN DE PERS 92 Neal Martin - vinous.com (April 2021) The 2019 Pofadder contains 80% whole-cluster Cinsault matured in used foudre. It has an extremely well-defined bouquet of pine cones and mint-infused red fruit. The palate is well balanced with good grip on the entry, a mixture of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit leading to an herbal finish that just needs a little more grip and density. Still, this is an excellent OVS from Sadie, though I would not put it at the top of the pile this year. Drink 2022-2036. Tim James - winemag.co.za (Augustus 2020) Riper, darker than the last few vintages (though red fruit still dominates), and more fragrant and complex, and altogether quite approachable. Richness combined with quite a forceful acidity; nice understated tannic tug. As always, one of the Cape’s most serious and eloquent cinsaults.
