Mev. Kirsten is de oudste en meest venerabele Chenin Blanc van Zuid Afrika. De wijngaard werd aangeplant in 1905 in Stellenbosch aan de voet van de Botmanskop. Het is een monumentale wijn die zonder meer behoort tot de allergrootste witte wijnen ter wereld. Deze primus inter pares is vorstelijk verfijnd tot in zijn eeuwiglijkende finale. De Oude Wereld-neus en krijtige textuur geeft het geheel statige richting en vorstelijke dimensie. Tien jaar wachten is uw pijnlijke plicht en dan nog is flink decanteren een noodzaak. VOLGENS EBEN SADIE Over the past 3 years we have invested in this vineyard on a big scale and it is starting to show on so many levels - not only in the vines and in the chemistry of the grapes, but in every aspect. The wine has gained elegance, carried by immense texture, density and power. Having produced this wine over the past 14 years the only thing to be said is that this vintage may very well rival 2015 and may possibly be the best bottling to date. Buying this wine is but one aspect of the transaction. The greatest requirement here is patience. Please give this wine time. IN DE PERS 96 Neal Martin - vinous.com (April 2021) The 2019 Mev. Kirsten, which is pure Stellenbosch Chenin, is taut and precise on the nose, displaying a similar marine influence as the Kokerboom, plus touches of fern and lanolin. The saline, slightly nutty palate is supremely well balanced with a killer line of acidity and touches of sour lemon on the aftertaste. This deserves 4–5 years in bottle, as it has huge potential. A quite brilliant wine from guru Sadie. Drink 2024-2042. Tim James - winemag.co.za (Augustus 2020) A lot of work in this old Stellenbosch vineyard is making this, the forerunner of the Ouwingerdreeks, more reliably excellent (though I’ve always loved it), and this is a truly brilliant wine. A more refined, filigree expression of chenin than Skurfberg, but no less penetrating and intense. It is both delicate and powerful – that intricate filigree tracery is of steel (though stone is the other element). The most expensive of the Ouwingerdreeks and, to justify the cost, it is worth, as always, paying attention to Eben Sadie when he suggests that buyers also have responsibilities: “Buying this wine is but one aspect of the transaction. The greatest requirement here is patience.” It will be well rewarded.
