Capbern brengt de meest klassieke Saint Estèphe tegen een onweerstaanbaar prijsje en wordt gemaakt door Calon Ségur. De wijngaard van 38 hectare bestaat uit één blok tussen Phélan Ségur en Meyney is aangeplant met 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot en 2% Petit Verdot. De 2019 is intens purper gekleurd en voorzien van een exotische neus van cassis en zwarte bes. Rijkelijk zwart fruit rolt over de tong in een opulente, fruitige stijl met zijdezachte tannine met een gechocolateerd accentje. De tannine is present en wordt tijdens de 18 maand élevage op 60% nieuwe eik versmolten. 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot en 1% Petit Verdot. Dit is 10% Cabernet Sauvignon méér dan gebruikelijk. Het rendement evenaart dit van 2018 met 40hl/ha. Dit wordt vroeg genietbaar en een ware crowdpleaser. We zien niets anders dan voordelen. Schrik niet van het alcholgehalte (15,1%vol), gebruikelijk voor Capbern. Hij compenseert dit ruimschoots met fruitigheid! IN DE PERS ? Neal Martin – vinous.com (Juni 2020) The 2019 Capbern (formerly Capbern-Gasqueton from the Calon-Ségur stable) comes across a little over-ripe on the nose. It is sweet and quite forward on the palate with plush blueberry and cassis fruit and powerful on the finish. I have tasted some great wines from this Saint-Estèphe in recent years but I will reserve judgement based on this sample for now. 89-91 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Juni 2020) Capbern is bold and exuberant in 2019. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice are kicked up a few notches here. Exuberant and racy to the core, Capbern is a total knock-out in this vintage. At 15.1% alcohol, this is an especially unctuous, rich and ripe style, but it works well in this vintage for this cru. 89-91 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – robertparker.com (Juni 2020) Very deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Capbern explodes from the glass with notes of prunes, baked black cherries and fruitcake plus suggestions of mocha, Chinese five spice, tobacco leaf and cedar chest with a touch of peppercorns. Full-bodied, rich and voluptuous (15.1% alcohol!), the palate has a firm, chewy backbone and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. 92 Jane Anson – decanter.com (Juni 2020) Powerful and impactful, and the alcohol although well balanced by fruit does have an impact on the texture and mouthfeel of this wine, which is gourmet and full of chocolate, damson and tar. Barrel sample. Deep colour to the rim. Powerful, even burly with added muscle this year. Dense fruit with a raisined edge to the aroma. Palate rich, broad and packed with tannin. Hope the fruit will hold. Dry, firm finish. 15.1%. Drink 2027–2034. 93-96 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (Juni 2020) This is a gorgeous young sample with wonderful blue fruit and spices, as well as a nice overlay of pretty wood. Medium to full body and firm, silky tannins. Hints of minerals. On the palate, the wine is lush, round and opulently textured, with length and purity in the fruits. Clearly, this is a new level for Capbern. The wine is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, reaching 15.1% alcohol. 93 Terre de Vins – terredesvins.com (Juni 2020) IN DE WOORDEN VAN VINCENT MILLET Ce millésime offre une nouvelle fois une palette aromatique complexe, florale et fruitée, avec une fraîcheur qui accompagne des tanins soyeux, fins et élégants. Un nouveau millésime qui rivalise avec les 2016 et 2018… Calon SégurCalon Ségur is de meest Noordelijk gelegen Grand Cru Classé van de Médoc en één van de mooiste terroirs van Bordeaux. De wijngaard omvat 50 hectare uit één stuk, ten noordwesten van het gehucht Saint Estèphe. Er is een bovenlaag van Graves argilo-sableuses, die werd gedeponeerd door de Gironde, en een kleihoudende onderlaag. 45 hectare zijn beplant met 56% Cabernet Sauvignon 35% Merlot, aangevuld met Cabernet Franc en Petit Verdot. De Cabernet Sauvignon gedijt er prima en omvat dan ook doorgaans ¾ van het assemblage. Densiteit van aanplanting is voor hen primordiaal en ze mikken op 8.000 wijnstokken per hectare. De gemiddelde leeftijd van de wijngaard is slechts 22 jaar in 2017. |
