Aanvankelijk krabbelde ik slordig weg “TTB” of "très très bon"… Mijn excuses: ik was net ervoor van mijn sokken geblazen door één van de wijnen van het jaar: Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Maar toch: Phélan staat er en hoeft niet te schamen... We herbeginnen: briljant robijnrood, een frisse neus van zwarte bessen en ceder. Dit is een genereuze wijn met mooie tannine-structuur, ondersteund door intense volmondigheid, en simpelweg een heerlijke Médocain! Een knapperig, compact palet met accenten als ceder, menthol en frisse, zwarte vruchten doet de rest. De heerlijke finale is peperig, kruidig en voorzien van heerlijke fraîcheur. Kortom : Phélan Ségur 2019 lijkt de vorige excellente wijnjaren 2009, 2010, 2014, 2016 en 2018 te overtreffen. Véronique Dausse is geïnspireerd! Assemblage: 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot en 2% Cabernet Franc. Dit vleugje Cabernet Franc, aangeplant in 2013, maakt vandaag zijn entrée in het assemblage. De oogst verliep tussen 24 september en 10 oktober. 14,5% vol. Elevage in 55% nieuwe eik. Philippe Van de Vyvere is eigenaar van Phélan Ségur, een wijngaard van 70 hectare tussen Montrose en Calon Ségur in. Hij is aangeplant met 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 1,5% Cabernet Franc en 1,5 % Petit Verdot. Directeur Véronique Dausse, de zonnige en enthousiaste persoonlijkheid die het project van de eigenaar uitvoert was droevig dat Corona elk bezoek had verhinderd « alors que nous écrivons l’une des belles pages de son histoire ! ». Ondertussen vervolmaken interieurarchitect en antiquair Axel Vervoordt en landschaparchitect Tom Stuart Smith hun werkzaamheden; veel aandacht ging naar de Irish Room met een collectie XIXde eeuwse « porcelaines de Gien » voorzien van het monogram van Phélan. Witte zwanen sieren opnieuw de vijver en een tiental bomen werden aangeplant. Phélan Ségur is niet alleen goed bezig in de wijngaard. Maar het is wat u drinken zal, dat ons boeit... IN DE PERS 95 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Phélan Ségur has a very impressive nose of ample blackberry and boysenberry fruit, plus touches of graphite, sous-bois and light minty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, harmonious and poised, with substantial tannins and very good weight. There is a sense of completeness to this Saint-Estèphe that urges you back for another sip. The best Phélan-Ségur in a long time. Drink 2025-2050. 93-95 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Juni 2020) The 2019 Phélan Ségur has a very composed bouquet with detailed blackberry and briary scents, a touch of melted tar and cracked black pepper coming through with aeration. The palate is very cohesive with fine tannins, gentle grip, quite saline in the mouth with impressive density and harmony towards the finish. Quintessentially Saint-Estèphe, this is a superb Phélan Ségur that should not be under-estimated. Tasted twice. Drink 2025 - 2050. 93+ Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Phélan Ségur is a rich, heady wine. A burst of super-ripe dark fruit, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice, smoke, incense and spice races across the palate. As good as the 2019 is, I liked it more en primeur. I find the bottled wine not quite as expressive, especially on the mid palate. Tasted two times. Drink 2025-2039. 93-95 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Juni 2020) The 2019 Phélan Ségur is marvelous. In fact, it is one of the best vintages I can remember tasting. Graphite, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice, crème de cassis and lavender are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. Wonderfully nuanced and layered, the 2019 Phélan Ségur is a wine of unreal depth and vivid intensity. In a word: impressive. 92-94 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – robertparker.com (Juni 2020) Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Phélan Ségur prances out of the glass with bold notions of blackcurrant pastilles, baked plums and boysenberries, plus hints of chargrilled meats, lavender, tilled soil and cracked black pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is like a tightly coiled spring, featuring loads of condensed black fruit and fragrant layers, framed by firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with bags of energy. 94 Jane Anson – decanter.com (Juni 2020) Another impressive vintage at this estate, one that is regularly turning out wines to sit up and take notice of. A touch more austerity than was seen at this stage in the 2018, but the same level of intensity and concentration and just sheer confidence without trying too hard. Undertow of crushed granite and liquorice root, with real precision in the cassis fruits, and a wall of tannins that manage to be both present and unobtrusive. Great winemaking going on here. 56% new oak, 3.8pH, 1PT81. Could go higher when retasting in bottle. Tasted twice two weeks apart. Drink 2026-2042. 17/20 James Lawther MW – jancisrobinson.com (Juni 2020) 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Barrel sample. Fragrant nose with a floral, dark-fruit edge. Ripe and smooth but lifted, the tannins compact and very refined. Layers of fruit then a long, firm, persistent finish. In short, an elegant interpretation of St-Estèphe. Drink 2027 – 2040. 96-95 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (Juni 2020) The complexity and depth is fantastic in this beautifully crafted, refined red. Such poise, finesse and length. Goes on and on. We will see if this is better than the outstanding 2018. 92-94 Yohan Castaign – anthocyanes.com (Juni 2020) 91 Jean-Marc Quarin – quarin.com (Juni 2020) 93-95 Jeff Leve – winecellarinsider.com (Juni 2020) The nose grabs you with its cedar chest, forest floor, earth, herb, tobacco, spice, cigar box, and smoke aromas coupled with a load of just-picked blackberries. Round and smooth, with finesse, a big juicy blast of fruit and roasted coffee beans, this could be the best vintage of Phelan Segur yet. 96 Terre de Vins – terredesvins.com (Juni 2020) IN DE WOORDEN VAN VERONIQUE DAUSSE Le millésime est assemblé et il tient ses promesses. Sa robe est d’un rouge profond aux reflets violacés. Au nez, les arômes de fruits murs (cerise noire, cassis, mûre…) sont complexifiés par des notes toastées et réglissées. En bouche, la matière remarquable en attaque se poursuit par un fruit charnu et croquant. Réunissant les qualités de concentration, de puissance tannique, de structure, de maturité et de longueur, 2019 est aussi doté de la fraîcheur nécessaire à l’équilibre des grands vins bordelais.
