Na de oogst van 2020 zal de familie Cuvelier een eeuw aan het hoofd van Léoville Poyferré vieren. Wie houdt niet van hun wijnen? Maar vandaag proeven we 2019. Sara Lecompte Cuvelier: « Pour la deuxième année consécutive, les conditions climatiques nous ont laissé le temps d’attendre, pour vendanger chaque parcelle à maturité optimale. Nous avons commencé par les grands terroirs, laissant aux autres parcelles le temps d’arriver à pleine maturité. » Onze neus duikt in het purperen glas en ontdekt cassis, blauwe vijg en zoete vanille. De opulente tongval is consistent met vlot, gepolijst fruit die Poyferré zijn typische onctueuze ronding geeft. Fijnbesnaarde en versmolten tannine laten een gloed van intense cassis en blauwe bessen schemeren doorheen getoaste eiktoetsen, kaneel, nootmuskaat en ceder, als een werk van Anish Kapoor. Een breed spectrum aan beklijvende impressies openbaart geleidelijk zijn ware dimensie. We steken onze nek uit: deze spectaculaire 2019 overklast de concurrentie en is dit jaar koploper in het Saint Julien-peleton. Hij eist een trui op die zo geel is als zijn etiket. Nu heerlijk, altijd heerlijk. Onderstaande scores spreken voor zich. Ik scoor nog hoger. IN DE PERS 97 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré has the quintessential "LP" bouquet of perfumed blackberry, black plum, perhaps less tobacco than last year but still those hints of desiccated orange peel. It opens beautifully in the glass. The palate has a satin-like texture, a fine bead of acidity and fine pixelation. It is perhaps less luxuriant than I found this last year from barrel and has become slightly more linear, displaying a touch more breeding and precision. It fans out wonderfully on the finish, completing a fabulous Saint-Julien with huge potential. 14.18% alcohol. Drink 2026-2065. 96-98 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Juni 2020) The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré has a typically seductive bouquet with layers of ripe black fruit laced with tobacco, sous-bois, touches of marmalade and dried orange peel. Give it another hour and more blue fruit begins to emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with lavish, luxuriant black fruit and a creamy texture that is instantly seductive. It is a more opulent Saint-Julien than the Barton with a satin-like texture on the finish. If you love the style of Léoville-Poyferré then you will adore this. Drink 2026 - 2065. 97 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is creamy, racy and voluptuous to the core. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and menthol fill out the layers with effortless grace. In some tastings, the 2019 has come across as quite powerful, while in other moments it shows greater finesse. Either way, the 2019 is positively stunning. I very much admire its energy and persistence. Tasted three times. Drink 2029-2049. 95-97 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Juni 2020) The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is magnificent. Inky, dark and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2019 possesses off-the-charts richness allied to tremendous breadth that grows over time. Crème de cassis, chocolate, licorice, sweet spice and menthol wrap around the palate as this dense, potent Saint-Julien shows off its alluring personality. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2019 for some years, as it is a wine of raw power. 96 William Kelley - robertparker.com (April 2022) The 2019 Léoville Poyferré is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of crème de cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of licorice, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and smoke. Full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's broad and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Invariably the most sumptuous of the three Léovilles, featuring some 35% Merlot, the 2019 is a terrific effort that will offer a wide drinking window. Drink 2027-2057. With some 80 hectares under vine, Léoville Poyferré's parcels are inter-fingered with those belonging to the Delon and Barton families by the river and on the plateau of Saint-Julien. The soils are cultivated less frequently and less deeply these days, and conversion to organic methods is gradually being rolled out, parcel by parcel, some being easier to farm this way than others. Winemaking features a five- to eight-day cold soak, followed by comparatively long macerations, and maturation is in 80% new oak, with lots destined for new barrels completing their malolactic fermentation in barrel. Combined with an elevated percentage of Merlot in the vineyards (though the tendency here, as elsewhere, is to replant with more Cabernet Sauvignon), this delivers the richest, fleshiest, most flamboyant of the three Léoville estates, but while it's generally the most open out of the gates of the three, that hasn't come at the expense of longevity. The 2019 vintage is a great success at this address. 93-95+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown - robertparker.com (Juli 2020) Casting a deep garnet-purple color, the 2019 Léoville Poyferré charges out of the gate with alluring notes of chocolate-covered cherries, blueberry pie, dried mulberries and blackcurrant cordial plus suggestions of camphor, espresso, spice cake and oolong tea. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals bags of freshness and a suitably approachable texture, supporting the decadent blackberry preserves and exotic spice layers, finishing on a stewed tea note. An already incredibly impressive wine, I imagine by the end of barrel aging the tannins will be fully brought into line here and the fruit will emerge singing of even more nuances. Drink 2026-2055. 97 Jane Anson – janeanson.com (Februari 2022) 96 Jane Anson – decanter.com (Juni 2020) A rich and highly charged Poyferré, with creamy damson and vanilla pod spice expanding through the mid palate. Hugely impressive, with velvety tannins and plenty of charcoal, grilled sarments and slate impact. Higher tension through the core would take the score up even further. 4% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the estate under the ownership of the Cuvelier family. Drinking Window: 2027 - 2042. 18/20 James Lawther MW – jancisrobinson.com (Juni 2020) 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. Barrel sample. Deep purple hue. Rich but reserved with great purity of fruit. Cassis and spice aromas. Powerful tannic frame but folded in layers of unctuous fruit. Mouth-filling and flexing a little muscle. A big wine with plenty of matière. Long finish. One for the cellar. Chocolate and walnuts to the blue fruit. It’s full-bodied. Plenty of fruit at the end. Léoville PoyferréLéoville Poyferré is sinds 1920 eigendom van de familie Cuvelier. Didier Cuvelier kwam aan het hoofd van het domein in 1978 en wordt sinds 1994 bijgestaan door de befaamde oenoloog uit Pomerol, Michel Rolland. Dit heeft zo zijn gevolgen: de wijnen lijken "gladder", volmondiger en vroeger genietbaar dan die van las Cases of Barton. De 80 hectare (60,386 hectare voor de Grand Vin) zijn aangeplant met 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot en 4% Cabernet Franc tegen een densiteit van 8.700 wijnstokken per hectare. De bodem bestaat uit Graves garonnaises en sables eoliens. De gemiddelde leeftijd is 37 jaar. Zou Léoville Poyferré meer Merlot prefereren dan andere Saint Juliens? Wat er ook van zij, Poyferré charmeert met “aisance”. What is there not to like? Monsieur Poyferré was één van de drie die er de hand wist te leggen op een deel van het grote Château de Léoville bij een openbare verkoop in de nasleep van de Franse Revolutie. De Cuveliers investeerden: strengere selectie, invoering van een tweede wijn en intenser gebruik van nieuwe eik brachten resultaat. De familie blijft in zijn goede naam investeren, ook met de op til zijnde generatiewissel van Didier Cuvelier naar Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. Léoville Poyferré bereikt het hoogste echelon met 1990, 2000, 2009, 2010, 2016 en 2018 als voorlopige hoogtepunten. Het zijn schitterende, diepe en rijkelijke wijnen. Léoville Poyferré is altijd een slimme primeurreservatie. |
