IN DE PERS 96 Neal Martin - vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Haut-Bailly, matured in 50% new oak and bottled in April 2021, has a stunning, classy and sophisticated bouquet of blackberry, melted tar, Earl Grey and light minerally scents. This is extremely focused, almost pixelated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, but there is real backbone and structure to this wine. Deep, intense, classy and classic in style, delivering an immense amount of sapidity on the enormously persistent finish. As I mentioned previously, this is a less flamboyant Haut-Bailly, but more intellectual. Drink 2024-2059. 96 Antonio Galloni - vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Haut-Bailly is a huge, powerful wine. There is plenty of the richness of this warm vintage, but a ton of tannin too. In most warmer years, Haut-Bailly can be a real charmer upfront, but in 2019 it's all about somber dark fruit, tannin and structure. A wine of breadth and power, Haut-Bailly will need many years in the cellar to truly blossom. It's unquestionably a big wine with a brilliant future. Bright aromatics lend freshness as the 2019 continues to open with air. Drink 2029-2059. 96+ William Kelley - robertparker.com (April 2022) The 2019 Haut-Bailly unwinds in the glass with complex aromas of dark berries, bay leaf, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, velvety and elegantly muscular, it's powerful and concentrated, with lively acids and an abundance of ripe but youthfully assertive structuring tannin that will demand some patience. Drink 2029-2065. Haut-Bailly now boasts one of Bordeaux's grander new wineries, but the 2019 vintage at this address reminds us that the old facilities were more than capable of delivering excellence too! Winemaking here is rather gentle, with comparatively cool fermentation temperatures and a modest 50% new oak, yet the 2019s are rather structured, serious wines that will demand a bit of patience, reflecting a more classically proportioned, elegant style than the more flamboyant 2018. As usual, Cabernet Sauvignon represents slightly over half of the blend, including a block of ancient, more than 100-year-old vines in front of the château itself. Haut BaillyHaut Bailly is een “essentiële” Pessac Léognan. Zijn wijnen markeren de proever volgens “l’esthétique à la française” die door dichter André Gide beschreven wordt als “rien de trop”. Omwille van dit classicisme herinnert Haut Bailly meer aan Haut Brion of La Mission dan aan Pape Clément of Smith Haut Lafitte. De wijngaard is een homogeen geheel van 30 hectare te Léognan, tien kilometer ten Zuiden van Bordeaux. Hij is beplant met 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot en 6% Cabernet Franc. Jaarlijks worden er zo’n 160.000 flessen geproduceerd. Voorgaande eigenaars waren Firmin le Bailly, Laurent de Lafaurie, baron de Monbadon, Alcide Bellot des Minières en Jean Sanders. Haut Bailly was Belgisch tussen 1955 en 1998. Sindsdien behoort het toe aan Robert G. Wilmers die de M&T Bank dirigeert in Buffalo, New York. Zijn echtgenote Elisabeth is een française. In de recentere wijnjaren 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 en 2010, herkennen we de gebruikelijke elegantie, finesse en aromatische complexiteit maar het gebalder en intenser karakter is nieuw. We danken deze “tour de force” aan een meer beheerst rendement en het plukken op optimale rijpheid. Reeds sinds 1967 is er een tweede wijn, la Parde de Haut Bailly, en sinds 1987 zelfs een derde, een generieke Pessac Léognan. Die strengere selectie maakt van La Parde een even elegante en complexe wijn als de Haut Bailly van twintig jaar terug. SandersRobert G. Wilmers bracht de kwaliteitswijnen van Haut Bailly op een hoger echelon. Véronique Sanders van Beek, de kleindochter van de vorige eigenaar, is hier in grote mate voor verantwoordelijk samen met de getalenteerde Gabriël Vialard. |
