2019 Montrose proeven in situ was een belevenis op zich. Enkel critici gevestigd in Bordeaux hadden tot dan toe Montrose 2019 kunnen proeven, want het Château verstuurde geen stalen tijdens de lockdown. Onze tocht naar Saint Estèphe eind juni 2020 gaf ons het "Dr. Livingstone, I presume"-gevoel. U weet wel: Stanley vond Livingstone terug op diens zoektocht naar de bronnen van de Nijl. We schrijven 1871, het jaar van de oprichting van onze wijnhandel. En wat bleek? "Understated elegance" houdt de puissance zuiver, soepel en vatbaar. Die densiteit, geënt op fraîcheur, verschilt van deze van de 2016, maar stille zelfzekerheid maakt de kwaliteit van Montrose 2019 oorverdovend evident. Sappige jeugdigheid, een elegante snit en die flirtende fraîcheur zijn hem eigen. Het potentieel van deze nog kolkende massa is groot, maar Terra Incognita is het niet meer, omdat de kenmerkende florale fraîcheur van het wijnjaar 2019 de proefervaring richting geeft. We vonden Livingstone en keerden terug naar Bordeaux en de beschaving, weer eens in admiratie voor dit gezegend terroir op de zilte oevers van de Gironde. "Vaut le voyage", zou de Michelin gids zeggen. De oogst vond plaats tussen 19 september en 8 oktober. Na een klein rendement in 2018 (toen slechts 24hl/ha) stelde 2019 gerust met 42hl/ha. De wijngaard werd verdeeld in 26 percelen of “climats". Daarbinnen werd nog eens « un ramassage intraparcellaire » gedaan, die een homogeen rijpe oogst opbracht. Maître de chai Vincent Ducup werkte nauw samen met oenoloog Éric Boissenot tijdens het assemblage van de 300 barriques vin de presse en de 80 loten vin de goutte van deze 26 climats. De Merlots waren zo uitmuntend dat ze uiteindelijk 30% van het assemblage zouden uitmaken zoals in het prachtige 2009. Het werd dus: 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 1% Petit Verdot. Elevage gedurende 18 à 20 maand in 60% nieuwe eik. Hervé Berland maakte in 2019 zijn eerste, volledig biologische Montrose. Het behalen van het label beoogt hij voorlopig niet. Hoe lovenswaardig deze werkwijze ook is, het maritime klimaat laat het niet per se en altijd toe. De tot nu toe gepubliceerde scores zijn uniform hoog. Twijfel is er niet. De prijs is "a killer" in vergelijking met deze van de beschikbare wijnjaren in onze kelders. De primeurprijs is EUR 7,00 lager dan de 2014 (97 bij Antonio Galloni en de wijn van dit wijnjaar) en EUR 48,00 lager dan 2016 (99 bij Neal Martin). We spreken exclusief BTW... IN DE PERS 99 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Februari 2023) The 2020 Montrose was bottled in July 2022. The alcohol is 13.4%, a whole degree less than the previous year but with the same concentration (IPT is 80). It has a fabulous bouquet that delivers on all that promise from when I finally tasted the wine around a year earlier from barrel, a cornucopia of blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, Indian ink and loamy/undergrowth scents. Very mercurial in the glass, it seems to shapeshift with every minute. The palate is medium-bodied with such a precise entry. This is far more detailed than either the 2019 or 2018, a symmetrical Montrose with unerring detail and mineralité, its silky texture belying the power underneath. This is unequivocally a brilliant wine and a benchmark in recent years. Contender for wine of the vintage. Drink 2025-2065. 97 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Montrose was bottled in July 2021, and though I did not taste it en primeur, I did sample it just prior to bottling and then after, in September 2021. It was picked from September 19 to October 8, with a similar percentage of Merlot to the 2009 (30% compared to around 25% due to the ripeness). At 14.4% alcohol, it has lower alcohol than the 2018 (14.8%). The Merlot guides the nose, which is a little more flamboyant than usual for Montrose, and very pure, offering small black cherries, black currant, wild mint and just a hint of camphor. The palate is medium-bodied, spicy and vibrant, with a silky-smooth texture and a touch of peppercorn on the entry. There is wonderful tension throughout this Montrose, and gentle grip on the finish. Will this vintage be more approachable than the 2018? Drink 2027-2060. 99 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Februari 2023) The 2020 Montrose is epic. Dark, rich and brooding, the 2020 possesses remarkable intensity, and, yet it is somehow not excessively heavy. Time in the glass brings our the wine's more elegant sophisticated side. All the elements are so well-balanced. Red/purplish fruit, lavender rose petal, gravel and spice are all accented by veins of intense minerality that lend shape and energy. The 2020 is a modern-day classic for Montrose and one of the great wines of the Left Bank. Drink 2030-2070. 100 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Montrose is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Rich, inky and towering in concentration, the 2019 possesses off the charts intensity and tons of structure to back it up. Succulent black cherry, plum, tobacco, gravel and licorice infuse the 2019 with striking depth. The 2019 is not quite as opulent as some recent vintages, and that's a good thing. Readers will find a regal wine that marries elegance with power. Unforgettable. Tasted two times. Drink 2034-2069. 97 William Kelley - robertparker.com (April 2022) The 2019 Montrose has turned out very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with a dramatic, perfumed bouquet of wild berries and cassis mingled with notions of lilac, violets, pencil shavings and warm spices, framed by nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep and multidimensional, with lively acids, beautifully refined tannins and a long, resonant finish. Checking in at 14.4% alcohol (rather higher than, for example, the brilliant 2009's 13.7% or the 2016's 13.3%), this is an undeniably powerful, ripe Montrose, but for now everything appears to be kept in check. Drink 2029-2065. This large estate overlooking the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe produces some of Bordeaux's greatest and longest-lived wines, and the last 15 or so years have seen it benefit from sustained investment. There's a brand-new winery and cellars, of course, but there's a lot of work going on in the vineyards too. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Château Montrose from the Charmolüe family in 2006, the estate included fully 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century, and a massale selection program has since identified 80 viable individuals, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, for use when replanting (the same efforts are currently being lavished on Merlot, drawing on a block behind the château acquired from Phélan-Ségur). Now cover crops are being trialed, and the soils are being cultivated more superficially to avoid disrupting the microbiome. Winemaking is rather classical, with three-week macerations and maturation in some 60% new oak. 99 Jane Anson – janeanson.com (Februari 2022) 98 Jane Anson – decanter.com (Juni 2020) Oh this is good, it steals up on you with real depth of flavour, stately and concentrated in a way that reminds me of a 1996 or a 2016. Extremely measured, very clear that this is going to age effortlessly, it is extremely discreet and yet packed with persistent flavours. A masterclass in the flavours and aromatics that you expect in a great Médoc wine - slate, crushed stones, savoury blackcurrant, liquorice, hints of smoke and cold ash. After five minutes in the glass the sweeter berry fruit comes out, and the whole thing is sappy and mouthwatering, and makes you smile. 12% press wine, 3.77pH. A yield of 47hl/ha. 60% new oak. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Drinking Window: 2029 - 2050. 18+/20 James Lawther MW – jancisrobinson.com (Juni 2020) 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Barrel sample. Deep purple-black hue. Slightly shy and reserved but clearly has plenty of depth. Elegant, dark-fruit fragrance as the wine opens. Clean and direct on attack with a marked note of salinity. Plenty of power but really refined tannins assisted by a bright, juicy quality to the fruit. Incredible length on the finish. Cette année, les bonnes conditions climatiques associées à nos pratiques culturales « vertes » nous ont permis d’obtenir une très belle récolte associant qualité et quantité. Un beau millésime en « 9 » qui s’inscrit dans une année parmi les plus chaudes de la décennie. Les premières dégustations laissent présager un millésime très proche du 2016 avec une belle matière aux tanins mûrs, précis et concentrés qui le classe parmi les grands millésimes de Montrose. MONTROSE Second Grand Cru Classé Montrose staat synoniem voor majesteit. Sinds de familie Bouygues eigenaar werd, blijft Montrose zeker in goede doen. Hervé Berland kwam over van Mouton Rothschild om erover te waken, nadat ook Nicolas Glumineau en Jean-Bernard Delmas er schitterend werk leverden. Als we dit, de “groene” insteek en de imposante verbouwingswerken buiten beschouwing laten, kunnen we nagenieten van de fenomenale wijnen aldaar werden geproduceerd in de wijnjaren 2009, 2010, 2016 en 2018 alsook van de wijn van het millésime 2014. Onderschat dus zeker ook deze laatste niet. MontroseHet fenomenale terroir van Montrose is gekend als “het Latour van Saint Estèphe”. De wijnen zijn grandioos en vertonen een typische “austérité”. Hun parcours is vlekkeloos: vooral 2003 was een fenomenale wijn, en 1990, 2009 en 2010 zijn hun perfecte parkerscores waard. Vandaag staan de gebroeders Bouygues aan het roer van deze Deuxième Grand Cru Classé. Zij zijn bekend van de gelijknamige bouwfirma, telefonie en mediahuis TF1. De nieuwe directeur, Hervé Berland (ex Mouton), zet de doelstellingen duidelijk uit: na een jarenlange renovatie verkeren wijngaard en Château in prima conditie. Kortom, we verwachten nog vele prachtwijnen van Montrose in de komende jaren! De wijngaard is één blok van 95 hectare op de oevers van de Gironde, aangelegd voor 1832. De naam “Mont-rose” verwijst naar de kleur van de boempjes en de heide die er vroeger stond. Het vormt met zijn Château, bijgebouwen en wijnbouwershuisjes bijna een klein dorp, waarvan de straatnamen verwijzen naar de namen van de voormalige eigenaars. Steek je neus op en je ademt onmiddellijk de zilte lucht van het maritiem klimaat die de wijngaard afkoelt in de zomer en vorst vermijdt in de winter. Bordeaux lijkt plots veraf… |
