Olifantsrivier. Old bushvine Chenin Blanc planted between 1940 en 1955 on decomposed sandstone soils. Skurfberg is één van de beste terroirs van Zuid Afrika voor Chenin Blanc. We aanschouwen drie percelen op de hellingen van de Skurfberg in Citrusdal tussen Clanwilliam en Lamberts Bay: het eerste brengt immense aromatische concentratie, het tweede mineraliteit en een aards karakter, en het derde perceel, hoger en dichter bij de Atlantische Oceaan, fraîcheur en aciditeit. Het geheel vertolkt zich in onwezenlijke complexiteit. Na parcellaire vinificatie volgt marriage na 12 maand en botteling 6 maand nadien. De neus is toegankelijk met oranjebloesem, citrus, kruid en mineraliteit van gespleten keitjes en krijttoetsen. Zuren houden de rijkelijke sensatie in evenwicht. De finale is even rijkelijk als strak. De zuiverheid van dit concentraat van Chenin Blanc is weergaloos en... excellent! Eben Sadie This 2020 vintage of Skurfberg was again bottled in very limited numbers as yields dwindled down again. The drought in the Cederberg Mountains continued and we opted to reduce the yield in order to save reserves. This vintage is an incredibly compact and a viscous expression of Chenin Blanc. The stonefruit and peach skin aromas are followed up by a very mineral expression and some tropical aromas in the background. The tannins are smooth and the acidity is perfectly nestled in between the fruit and the tannin. Please give the wine time in the bottle. IN DE PERS 95 Neal Martin - vinous.com (Augustus 2022) The 2020 Skurfberg is the Chenin Blanc and Palomino blend grown on limestone soils close to the coast that is matured in foudres with 10-11 months on the lees. It has a well-defined bouquet with iodine and saline notes on the nose that is slightly more neutral in style compared to Sadie's other whites. The palate is very well balanced, again, quite neutral in style, very saline with shades of nutmeg and lemon thyme, a saline tang sufacing towards the persistent finish. Uncompromising... in a postive sense of the word. Medium-bodied, the wine unpacks across the mid-palate, offering mind-boggling, bright acidity that will remain food-friendly for more than two decades.
