Op l’Eglise Clinet proefde ik Saintem met Noëmie Durantou. Ik ervaarde er één van de mooiste neuzen van 2020. Niet die van Noëmie, maar van de eerste wijn in haar formidabele line-up van bijzonder goed gemaakte (en uiterst betaalbare) wijnen: Saintem. Op die fenomenaal essentiële bordelese neus, rolt wondermooie tannine getooid in heerlijke kersjes over de tong. Dit briljant vatstaal is “dropdead gorgeous” als u het mij vraagt. Mijn enthousiasme verraste. Normaal want La Chenade, Les Cruzelles, Montlandrie, La Petite Eglise en natuurlijk l’Eglise Clinet moesten nog volgen. Saintem is pas hun instap en de prijs van deze whizzkid is minuscuul te noemen. Deze Saint Emilion Grand Cru is 100% Merlot, geplukt tussen 28 en 30 september, de laatste loodjes van het wijnjaar eigenlijk. Ondertussen geniet de wijn een élevage op 30% nieuwe eik. 14,5%vol. Saintem is een “indecent proposal” van het beste soort en verdient het uw nieuwe huiswijn te worden. Ik viel niet alleen voor zoveel charme: James Suckling scoorde een spetterende 94-95 (!). Een gouden tip zowaar! IN DE PERS 87-89 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Mei 2021) The 2020 Saintayme is more backward on the nose than expected and demands coaxing from the glass. Eventually it offers tightly wound blackberry, wild hedgerow and black truffle scents, an inviting marine/seaweed scent emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins that frame the sweet black cherry, bilberry and licorice notes. Quite linear toward the finish, it does not fan out like the 2018, although it feels long and persistent. Give this Saint-Émilion 3–4 years in bottle if you can. Drink 2025 – 2036. 92 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Februari 2023) The 2020 Saintayme is bright, punchy and wonderfully vibrant. Sweet perfumed floral notes, red berry fruit, cedar and cinnamon lend terrific aromatic brightness. In 2020, Saintayme is bit nervy and less fleshy than it can be. This is the first vintage made withour microbullage, a technique that was preciously used in some of the tanks here. I expect that will serve it will in the years to come, as the 2020 has an extra level of purity that is strinking. As alwasys, Saintayme is a selection from a 15-hectare property in Saint-Emilion's Saint Etienne de Lisse district, made with a Burgundian approach in while the wine is vinified by the owner and then raised by the Durantou family. Drink 2026-2040. 91-93 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Mei 2021) The 2020 Saintayme is bright, punchy and wonderfully vibrant. Lovely, a lyrical take on St Emilion limestone from the Durantou family, Olivier Gautrat director. The first year with Noemie Durantou as winemaker, having taken over from her late father Denis. Cellar master Olivier Gautrat. 92 Jane Anson – decanter.com (Mei 2021) Deep crimson colour, plenty of deep bilberry fruits, firm tannins and good tension; a lot to like about this wine. Closes in on the finish, pretty serious in feel overall, muscular, but has the deft kick upwards that you find in many limestone-led wines in the vintage. The first year with Constance and Noemie Durantou at the helm, having taken over from their late father Denis (Noemie in particular had also worked alongside him for several years as winemaker, along with cellar master Olivier Gautrat). Drinking Window 2027 – 2042. 90-92 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – robertparker.com (Mei 2021) The 2020 Saintayme is 100% Merlot, harvested between the 28th and the 30th of September. It has an alcohol of 14.5% and is aging in French oak barrels, 30% new. Deep purple-black colored, it needs a little coaxing to unlock scents of tar, forest floor and aniseed, over a core of baked black plums, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherries, plus a touch of dried mint. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with muscular black fruits and loads of earthy accents, framed by firm, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a lingering minty note. 63,000 bottles are expected to be made. Drink 2024 – 2038. 94-95 James Suckling – jamessuckling (April 2021) A gorgeous red with so much black fruit and salty, mineral character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy, polished tannins and a long finish. The precision and fine texture is impressive. One of the best I have had for a while. 16/20 James Lawther MW – jancisrobinson.com (Mei 2021) 100% Merlot. Brand from the Durantou (L’Eglise-Clinet) stable. Cask sample. Zesty and fresh on the nose with berry-fruit aromas. Round and sweet but juicy as well, the tannins light and grainy. Bit of alcohol on the finish but consistent in quality and style. 14.5%. Drink 2024 – 2030. 92-94 lefigaro.fr (Mei 2021) 91-93 Yohan Castaing - anthocyanes.fr (Mei 2021) DurantouDenis Durantou was een geniale wijnmaker en één van de allergrootste in Bordeaux. De kleine productie van zijn Pomerol "extraordinaire" Eglise Clinet is wereldwijd gegeerd.Zijn talent bewees hij bovendien in de betaalbare wijnen die hij daarnaast maakte: van de achterdeur van l’Eglise Clinet zag Denis zijn wijngaarden van Les Cruzelles en La Chenade (Lalande de Pomerol). Verderop vinden we Saintayme (Saint Emilion) en Montlandrie (Castillon). Ze zijn allemaal heerlijk, geloofwaardig en overtuigend. Saintayme is een perceel van 35 jaar oude Merlots op klei en graves in Saint Etienne de Lisse binnen de appellatie Saint Emilion. In Lalande de Pomerol worden Les Cruzelles en La Chenade gemaakt naargelang de bodemsamenstelling en de ouderdom van de wijnstokken. De jonge wijnstokken van La Chenade (gelegen op graves) verleiden terwijl we de oudere wijnstokken van Les Cruzelles op klei en graves bodems kunnen vergelijken we goede Pomerols. Sinds de aankoop in 2000 zette Denis de wijngaard maniacaal naar zijn hand. Montlandrie in Castillon is de recentste aankoop: de 11 hectare klei en kalkgronden zijn beplant met 25 jaar oude wijnstokken (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc of 70%, 25% en 5% Cabernet Sauvignon vanaf 2016). Buiten de erkende appellaties om, behoren deze wijnen tot de beste van Bordeaux. De tweede wijn van Eglise Clinet, La Petite Eglise, is zeldzaam met een jaarlijks productie beperkt tot zo'n 7.000 flesjes. Het levenswerk van Denis Durantou wordt verdergezet door zijn drie dochters. « Je veux continuer à faire honneur au travail de mon père », zegt Noémie die al 4 jaar vinifieert samen met Olivier Gautrat, al 20 jaar maître de chai. « À Pomerol, Je suis chez moi. J’y ai grandi, j’allais à l’école du village, je jouais dans le chai et j’ai le souvenir des odeurs… ». Constance zorgt voor 400 olijfbomen en truffeleiken. Alix volgt vanuit Parijs en is gepassioneerd door kunst en Japanse cultuur. Hun mama, kunstenares Marie Reilhac neemt deel aan de assemblages. Zeventig jaar oude Cabernet Franc wijnstokken gedijen op het perfect gedraineerd terroir van argilo-graveleux. Eglise Clinet is één van de grootste wijnen die er zijn. Hun Les Cruzelles in Lalande-de-Pomerol en Montlandrie in Castillon zijn superwijnen en blijven héél toegankelijk. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
