Rodolphe Péters maakte zijn inaugurale Californische Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut in piepkleine oplage. Racines is een samenwerking van twee Franse wijnhuizen: Etienne de Montille en Brian Sieve uit Bourgogne en Rodolphe Péters uit Champagne. Dit dreamteam maakt in het koel klimaat van Santa Rita Hills (Californië) een aantal artisanale Pinot Noir en Chardonnay met persoonlijkheid, zuiverheid en finesse. De Racines Grand Reserve Chardonnay is dus een Blanc de Blanc (100% Chardonnay) méthode traditionnelle. De 2018 bevat 15% vin de réserve van 2017, en verenigt drie, diverse terroirs van Sta Rita Hills: Wenzlau Family, Sanford & Benedict en Bentrock. Deze diversiteit in bodemsamenstelling brengt ons elegante en expressieve wijnen met prachtige mineralité en lengte. De druiven werden manueel geplukt in kleine cagettes en zachtjes en traag geperst als vendange entière. De élevage sur latte nam 30 maand in beslag zonder filtratie. Rita Hills to produce, for the first time, limited quantities of my own Sparklings within the Racines project. The 2019 vintage base also includes 25% reserve wines from the 2017 and 2018 harvests. This Grand Reserve Chardonnay made from the cool Sta Rita Hills is crafted with a Champagne pedigree, and it shows. This Blanc de Blancs from across renowned Sta Rita Hills vineyards has undeniable Old World charm and sophistication. The aromatics boast ample toasted biscuit notes and great yeasty complexity from the 30 months on lees. The palate has a fantastic depth of fruit, spiced pear, cardamom, nutmeg and bruised apples. There is a subtlety of savoury biscuits and hints of almond cream. Elegant, yet bold and wildly delicious. Drink 2023 - 2033. 94 Matthew Luczy - robertparker.com (Oktober 2024) Sourced from Wenzlau, La Rinconada, Sanford & Benedict and Bentrock, the NV Grand Reserve Sparkling (2020 Base) was disgorged in February of 2023 with a dosage of four grams per liter, after spending 2.5 years on its lees. The nose is effortlessly fragrant and refined, offering citrus peel, green orchard fruit, nougat and crushed stone aromas. The palate is elegantly chalky and succulent, exuding a refinement of mousse that is so difficult to find in domestic sparkling wines. It finishes with fine, chalky details and an ethereal lift, gracefully attaining its intended mission statement: a high-toned Sta. Rita Hills blanc de blancs made with Champenois intentionality and precision. Drink 2023-2033. In a significant development for the Sta. Rita Hills, Racines combines the expertise of Etienne de Montille, Brian Seave and Rodolphe Péters, representing the first major Burgundian/Champenois outpost in Santa Barbara County. Winemaker Ryan Hannaford completes the quartet responsible for these superb wines that have gradually become more tailored to the region. A singular highlight of the range is the Grand Reserve Sparkling, which exudes a clarity and refinement of mousse that is nearly unparalleled in California, making it one of the best expressions of domestic sparkling wine I have tasted. The Chardonnays are aged in barrel and finished in tank, resulting in chiseled, focused expressions. The Pinot Noirs employ high percentages of whole clusters and judicious new wood, combining a modern polish with confident but refined structures. Vineyard sources remain some of the region's best—including Sanford & Benedict, La Rinconada and Bentrock—and a 23-acre estate vineyard is underway, supplemented by a long-term lease at Wenzlau. 18+/20 Alder Yarrow - jancisrobinson.com (November 2023) A blend of 50% from the 2020 vintage and 50% reserve wines from the 2018 and 2019 vintages. Sourced from Wenzlau Family, Sanford & Benedict, La Rinconada and Bentrock vineyards. Whole-bunch pressed and aged on the lees in bottle for 30 months. No fining, no filtration. Disgorged February 2023. Dosage 4 g/l. 11,032 bottles made. Light yellow-gold with medium bubbles. Aromas of white flowers, lemon pith and sea air. A voluminous mousse delivers wonderfully ethereal flavours of seawater, lemon pith, herbs and wet chalkboard. Flavours of seawater and herbs and a hint of lemon peel and lemon juice linger in the finish. Crystalline and beautiful. There's a silkiness here that is very charming. Drink 2023 - 2033. 94 James Suckling - jamessuckling.com (August 2023) This is really steely and bright, with citrus, apple, and some minerality. It is medium-bodied, racy, and clean, with a long finish. Seashell and nutty notes. Racy acidity. This is the real deal. Pure Chardonnay.
