Na reeks mastodonten in de recente « millésimes solaires » charmeert 2021 Bélair Monange met een suave en precieze persoonlijkheid. Het kwaliteitsniveau is weergaloos en vergelijkbaar met Canon. Zijn uiterlijk is verzorgd en de lengte van de proefervaring is opmerkelijk. De 2021 is 99% Merlot met een vleugje Cabernet Franc, geplukt tussen 28 september en 2 oktober. Robijnrood straalt. Sappig en zacht rood fruit overheerst toetsen van bittere cacao. Het palet is zacht en « aérien » met kersenbloesem, viooltjes en succulente haagvruchten omgeven door fijne tannine. De complexiteit is groot en de opbouw is ondersteund in intensiteit. De verfijnde finale is bijblijvend. Op een hoogte van 88 meter op het plateau de calcaire à astéries zijn « fraîcheur et minéralité » gegeven. Met een zuidelijke oriëntatie en terrasses van blauwe klei over kalk is ook diepgang gewaarborgd. Van op de zuidelijke flank met « argile limoneuse » over diepe klei verkrijgt deze Saint Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé bovendien een gul en rond karakter die het geheel tekent. Jean Moueix en Anne-Adèle Monange, een koppel uit de Corrèze, kochten in 1931 Château Fonroque en legden zo de basis van de dynastie Moueix. Drie generaties, in 2008, later kocht Edouard Moueix Château Bélair en herdoopte het tot Bélair Monange. Sindsdien woont hij er met zijn echtgenote Kelley en twee kinderen. IN DE PERS 91 Neal Martin - vinous.com (November 2023) The 2021 Bélair-Monange has a strict and conservative bouquet, denied its usual flair by the challenges of the growing season. Slightly earthy in style with touches of tobacco and clove, it never quite slips out of second gear. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite fresh with a keen line of acidity. I appreciate the smooth, silky texture. Like a few other Right Bank wines, quality seems to cluster on the close, finishing on a high. In retrospect, the nose is the only shortcoming of this Saint-Emilion. Drink 2029-2052. 90-92 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Mei 2022) The 2021 Bélair-Monange was picked September 28 to October 2. It has an atypical ostentatious bouquet for the vintage – kirsch, blue fruit, a touch of violet petals – that needs to muster a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, fine acidity ans good substance, yet it clamps down toward the strict, linear finish. This does not have the persistence of the 2019 or 2020, and tasting the bottle twice (returning later on in the day for a different take), I cannot help but feel this top-ranking Saint-Emilion is struggling to nail down its identity this season. It’s definitely one I wish to revisit in the future to see whether I caught it at an inopportune moment. Drink 2029-2052. 93-95 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Mei 2022) The 2021 Bélair Monange is a very beautiful wine. Fruit forward and punchy, the 2021 makes quite a first impression. Ripeness is naturally less pushed here than in recent vintages – that is the year – but it is a style that works so well, as this site offers plenty of richness on its own. A rush of inky red/purplish fruit fills out the layers nicely. There’s not a ton of nuance or detail yet, but that will likely come in time. This is very nicely done. Drink 2031-2061. 93+ William Kelley – robertparker.com (Februari 2024) The ethereal 2021 Belair Monange shows its limestone terroir front and center in this cooler vintage, unwinding in the glass with notes of sweet cherries, minty red berries, raw cocoa and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, suave and polished palate that's pure, lively and mineral, concluding with a saline finish. Drink 2027-2045. 93-95 William Kelley – robertparker.com (April 2022) Offering up aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, pipe tobacco, loamy soil and spices, the 2021 Belair Monange is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with powdery tannins and a bright spine of acidity, concluding with a long, intensely saline finish. As young vines replanted on the plateau start to dominate the blend, the identity of this cru is becoming more and more marked, delivering wines of precision and sapidity. 96-97 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (Mei 2022) Medium to full body with creamy, velvety tannins. Polished and plush. Pretty spice notes, such as white pepper and cloves to the ripe dark-plum and berry fruit. Some pine cones. Fine, ripe and textured. Concentrated for the vintage. Wonderful length, too. 95 Jane Anson – janeanson.com (April 2022) Lush raspberry and red cherry fruits, stone-strewn limestone salinity on the finish, complex and enjoyable. This has grilled oak smoke and is accomplished and finessed, lovely limestone character, tapers off slowly but surely on the finish. A clear success in the vintage, from an estate that is really flexing its muscles right now, up there with the very best in St Emilion. Harvest September 28 and October 2. 95 William Kelley - robertparker.com (April 2023) The 2020 Belair Monange has also turned out nicely in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of rich cherries, plums, sweet spices, rose petals and creamy new oak. Full-bodied, rich and layered, it remains fresh despite its ripe, sun-kissed profile, and its generous payload of tannin helps to integrate its rather lofty level of alcohol. This is a success in its demonstrative, modern style. Drink 2025-2045. 94-96 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – thewineindependent.com (Mei 2022) Made from 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Belair-Monange is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It slowly unfurls to reveal perfumed waves of black cherries, raspberry coulis, lilacs, and jasmine tea, followed by hints of forest floor, powdered cinnamon, and star anise. The medium-bodied palate is so evocative, with impactfully intense and yet wonderfully restrained red and black fruit layers, supported by miraculously velvety tannins, leading to a long and so very fragrant finish. Just stunning! Drink 2027-2047. 17/20 James Lawther – jancisrobinson.com (Mei 2022) 99% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Open and aromatic but with drive and definition on the palate. Fine tannins and freshness, the fruit and structure in balance. Gentle hand in extraction so more on elegance than power. Generaties terug was Bélair aanzien als de betere van de twee en dit kan weer het geval worden. De nieuwe eigenaar, Edouard Moueix, leverde grote inspanningen sinds de aankoop in de zomer van 2008: de gebouwen werden gerehabiliteerd en een heraanplanting van de wijngaard werd gestart. Om dit mogelijk te maken werden Magdelaine en Bélair samengevoegd in 2012. Bélair werd Bélair Monange in eerbetoon aan de overgrootmoeder van de eigenaar, Mme Adèle Monange (1887-1972). Voortaan prijkt de Engel van Albrecht Dürer in rode inkt op het etiket.
