The 2021 Lynch-Bages has a wonderful bouquet with intense blackberry and bilberry fruit, retaining the estuarine element I remarked upon from barrel. The oak here is seamlessly integrated and gains complexity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, very supple and focused, a little more peppery toward the finish with impressive grip and depth in context of the vintage. This is a superb achievement in a tricky season. Chapeau, Jean-Charles Cazes. Drink 2027-2055.

94-96 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Mei 2022)
The 2021 Lynch-Bages, picked at 34hL/ha and matured in 75% new oak for a planned 18 months, has an outstanding bouquet, beautifully-defined and sensual, a mixture of black and blueberry fruit, very fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, good body and density, quite precise with a tensile finish. This fans out nicely on the finish. A very classy Lynch Bages with echoes of Jean-Michel Cazes' classics from the late eighties. 13.14% alcohol. Drink 2027-2055.

“The growing season started early,” Jean-Charles Cazes told me, the château was a hive of activity in preparation for their winery inauguration the following week. “Spring was wet and then summer was cool and rainy. There was mildew pressure all along. Yields were small for Lynch Bages at 34hL/ha and Les Ormes de Pez just under 40hL/ha. The low yields helped ripen the grapes; if we had had 50hL/ha, this would have made them more vegetal. We started picking on 27 September and finished on 9 October - classic dates compared to recent years. It was a discriminatory year between terroirs. Some decisions during blending were important, for example, whether to use the Merlot. In the new winery, we can work with better precision, and so it was a good year to have that new facility. The wines have evolved after fermentation and gained roundness during élevage.”

94 Antonio Galloni - vinous.com (December 2023)
The 2021 Lynch-Bages is rather somber tday. Black fruit, mocha, licorice and chcolate are all amplified in this decidedly musculare wine from a cool year. This is a distinctly cool-climate Lynch-Bages built on power, with less of the usual flash. Drink 2031-2061.

92-94 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Mei 2022)
The 2021 Lynch Bages is a brooding wine. Black cherry, leather, spice and menthol add to its decidedly somber personality. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 develops during élevage. Today, the 2021 comes across as dark and heavy, with the oak not fully integrated, and less of the suave finesse that is perhaps the key Lynch Bages signature. Drink 2031-2061.

The 2021s at Lynch Bages are pretty potent wines that are still coming together in barrel. "Flowering took place under wet conditions," Jean-Michel Cazes told me. "We saw quite a bit of mildew pressure and of course the same cool, overcast summer as everyone else. Yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to our more typical 45-50."

93+ William Kelley – robertparker.com (Februari 2024)
The 2021 Lynch-Bages is one of the vintage's bigger, broader-shouldered wines, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, plums and spices, framed by a generous application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, dense and chunky, with a velvety attack that segues into a layered core of fruit framed by generously extracted tannins, it concludes with a long, lusty finish. Fully 40 hectares of this estate is now cultivated organically, principally those parcels that adjoin the houses of Pauillac. As is almost invariably the case with this estate, it will repay a bit of patience.

93-95 William Kelley – robertparker.com (April 2022)
The second vintage vinified in the Cazes family's new winery, the 2021 Lynch-Bages unwinds in the glass with aromas of minty cassis, sweet berries, loamy soil, black truffle and cigar wrapper, framed by nicely integrated new oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, it's a serious, layered, powerful, youthfully structured wine that will come together beautifully with maturation in barrel.

96-97 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (Mei 2022)
This is really cool to smell, with lead pencil shavings, iron filings and oyster shells. Blackcurrants, too. Full to medium body with layers of firm tannins, but a dusty and powdery texture, too. Lovely finish. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 3% cabernet franc.

94 Jane Anson – janeanson.com (April 2022)
This is impressive, reduction on the first nose but it clears to show gentle smoked oak, bitter cocoa beans and liqourice, giving balance the the fresh acidities that stud the blackberry and raspberry fruits. This is powerful, with a structure that feels similar to the 2014 or the 2008 - a little subdued and austere, but with ageing potential. A high tannin index of 90IPT. Harvest September 27 Lynch through to October 9. One of the best in Pauillac, finishing up with chewy tannins.

92-94 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – thewineindependent.com (Mei 2022)
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Lynch-Bages rolls out of the glass with effortlessly expressive notes of creme de cassis, black raspberries, and mulberries, giving way to hints of crushed rocks, wild sage, and wood smoke. Light to medium-bodied, the palate has a sturdy frame of firm, grainy tannins and bags of freshness framing the muscular fruit, finishing long and minerally. The blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. This wine is due to be aged for 18 months in oak, 75% new. The wine has a pH of 3.72 and an IPT of 90. Drink 2027-2053.

Lynch Bages

Sindsdien bevestigt Jean-Charles: The best is yet to come...

Cazes
