Wijnen

De briljante Nicolas Glumineau is tot alles in staat. Na een carrière bij Montrose moet hij Pichon Lalande weer op de sporen zetten. Nu de ingrijpende bouwwerken achter de rug zijn, komen de eerste resultaten: in het zwak wijnjaar 2013 bracht hij een felbesproken 100% Cabernet Sauvignon uit. Da's lef. En dit jaar stunt hij opnieuw.

De oogst van 2014 (van 16 september tot 20 oktober) was de langste ooit: vijf weken! Het assemblage bestaat uit 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc en 6% Petit Verdot. Beter kan een Pauillac niet zijn: de vorstelijke neus is geparfumeerd met massa’s rijkelijk fruit (cassis, bosbessen, zwarte kersjes) maar ook grafiet, mineralen, wierook, vanille en viooltoetsen. Het geheel is soepel, volmondig en succulent. Bijzonder fijne tannines onderbouwen de intens fruitige kern. Perfect. Ik besluit direct: Pichon Lalande 2014 is een meesterwerk. Ik kijk rond: de nieuwe cuvier, de wijngaard naast Latour, de oevers van de Gironde... Ik herproef: heb ik het juist? Ja... Legendarische flessen (Margaux 2000, Montrose 2003, Latour 2005, Petrus 2009, enz.) hebben een opmerkelijke eigenschap: ze doen hun ding, alsof het niets inhoudt en niet de minste inspanning heeft gekost... Zomaar. Wat zal er gebeuren als een groot wijnjaar wind in de zeilen van Pichon Lalande blaast? Wow! Deze 2014 is nu al één van de beste Pichon Lalande ooit vervaardigd. Verwacht nog meer vuurwerk in de komende jaren...

The 2014 Pichon Lalande has the edge over Pichon Baron a few months ago. It is a tight race but here Pichon Lalande edges it. It has a wonderful, complex, intense bouquet with blackberry, briary, graphite and mint – just a straight-down-the-line Pauillac with all the aristocratic flair you look for. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, layers of pure black fruit laced with graphite and mint. It is blessed with a satin-like texture, not a hair out of place from start to finish, with a long, persistent aftertaste that completes a fabulous wine for the vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drink 2022-2055.

The 2014 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has an expressive bouquet with lively blackberry, cedar, flint and graphite aromas that are not powerful, yet display admirable precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, the Merlot content lending this Pauillac its trademark fleshiness and roundness, yet there is clearly structure here (not always a trait of this Pauillac growth). It will develop more complexity and personality with bottle age, but at the moment you can sit back and just admire the cohesion and superb length. Winemaker Nicolas Glumineau has overseen a quite wonderful Pichon-Lalande, one with inbuilt longevity. Drink: 2020-2050.

The Château Pichon-Lalande 2014 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot picked over five weeks between 16 September and 20 October. It has a very pure and precise bouquet with a light marine influencing the black cherries and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a tense, graphite-tinged opening, a fine line of acidity (pH 3.72) and a silky smooth finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon is very expressive and dominates the Merlot at the moment, although the Merlot is essentially counterbalancing what might have been a much more austere Pichon-Lalande. Under Nicolas Glumineau, this Pauillac estate is really beginning to "motor" and this is an excellent wine, one within touching distance of the First Growths. Drink: 2019-2040.

One of the highlights in a dark horse vintage for Bordeaux, the 2014 Pichon Lalande is absolutely exquisite. Aromatic and silky on the palate, with bright, finely sculpted fruit and mid-weight structure, the 2014 is a picture-perfect example of the best 2014 has to offer. I have always adored the 2014 Pichon Lalande. This tasting only serves to reinforce that feeling. Ideal conditions in September extended the harvest and yielded perfumed, silky wines.

The 2014 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a huge wine. Rich, powerful and dense, yet remarkably precise, the 2014 boasts extraordinary density and fabulous balance. Scents of black fruits, graphite, smoke, tobacco, grilled herbs and incense meld into a huge core of fruit. Hints of black cherry jam, wild flowers and mint add an attractive aromatic top register on the close. Explosive and virile in style, the 2014 appears to have the pedigree to age well for several decades. It is without question one of the wines of the year. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.

What a joy to feel the ultra-fine tannins in this wine! It really is like touching fine silk. It's full-bodied with integrated drip fruit of tar, blackberries, minerals as well as a compacted and very long finish. Polished texture. Strong elegance. Reminds me of some outstanding wines of the 1980s such as 1986.

Pichon Comtesse

Pichon Lalande is de Amazone onder de wijnen en blijft zeer populair. Ook in Azië spreken hun licht exotische, kruidige karakter, het volmondig fruit en de gepolijste textuur aan. Het zijn elegante wijnen met ambitie. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 5% Petit Verdot.

De percelen van deze mooie wijngaard van 89 hectare dragen mooie namen als Les Ardileys, le Moulin Riche, Longueville, Grand'Plante, la Chapelle, Virginie, Sophie, Marie-Joséphine... De ene ligt nabij de Gironde langs Latour, de andere strekken zich uit over het plateau ten Zuiden van Pauillac en we vinden zelfs 11 hectare aan de overkant van het beekje de "jalle" in Saint Julien.  Zoals bij Palmer in Margaux brengt een relatief hoge proportie Merlot in het assemblage vrij zachte, soepele wijnen.

Pichon Lalande was de bruidschat van Pierre Mazure de Rauzan toen zijn dochter Thérèse huwde met Jacques de Pichon Longueville in 1700. In 1850 werd 3/5 geërfd door de drie zusters van de Baron Pichon en in 1926 samengebracht in Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Vanaf 1978, onder het bewind van "la Générale", de dynamische Madame de Lencquesaign, werd de rivaliteit met overbuur Pichon Baron aangewakkerd. Vandaag beheert Nicolas Glumineau deze Grand Cru Classé namens de eigenaar sinds 2007, het Champagnehuis Louis Roederer. De investeringen zijn groots opgevat; de nieuwe installaties laten voortaan perfecte "vinification parcellaire" toe en werken geheel op zwaartekracht... Maar het uitzicht over Château Latour en de Gironde blijft enig! In de komende wijnjaren verwachten wij zonder meer grandioze wijnen van Pichon Lalande, de legendarische 1982 achterna...
