Swartland. Chenin Blanc and Palomino on limestone. Volgens Eben Sadie is dit de Mohamed Ali van de line-up: “Fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee”. VOLGENS EBEN SADIE This vineyard has such a signature to it and without fail the salty saline and mineral DNA print of the site is everywhere to be found in this wine. The 2017 vintage also has some slightly riper honey blossom characteristics and the fruit is quite compressed - and a notion of the quince fruit can also be found in the aromatics. The finish on the wine is of great length. Fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee. IN DE PERS 93 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Augustus 2018) The 2017 Skerpioen is an equal blend of Chenin Blanc and Palomino from 80-year-old unirrigated vines on pure limestone soils. It has a crisp, marine-influenced, cockle-shell-scented bouquet, veering toward Chablis in style. The palate is beautifully balanced, with a fine line of acidity, and very saline in the mouth. Walnut and a dab of ginger emerge toward the finish. Excellent. Drink 2019-2032. 93 Christian Eedes - winemag.co.za (November 2018) A Swartland field blend of Chenin Blanc and Palamino planted between 1958 and 1967. The predominant impression on the nose is of white fruit – pear and white peach – but there are also hints of naartjie, hay and herbs. The palate is pure and direct – not too lean or thin but certainly not weighty. Very fresh acidity and a long, pithy finish. Tim James – Platter’s This West Coast chenin-palomino has always been a favourite wine of mine, and the 2017 does have the characteristic saline, mineral quality. It was picked very early to keep a good acid, but it’s actually comparatively easygoing and, I think, for elegant drinking anytime from now for (I’m guessing) five or so years max. There’s less concentration than usual. Gezien de lage opbrengsten is deze wijn voortaan enkel verkrijgbaar bij aankoop van evenveel Palladius of Columella.
