In 2013 bestond Dominus 30 jaar. Het wijnjaar is 100 Parkerpunten waard en kreeg een etiket van de hand van de befaamde Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar Wiliam Kenteridge.
2013 werd gekenmerkt door een zeer droge lente en warme zomer / vroege herfst. Er werd maar 163cm regen geregistreerd tussen januari en juni, terwijl dit gemiddeld 450cm is. De lage hoeveelheid water beperkte de groei. Terwijl de gemiddelde temperaturen warm bleven doorheen de lente en de zomer, bleef grote hitte uit in juli, augustus en september. De groeicyclus had 18 dagen voorsprong op de norm bij de start van de oogst op 10 september. Sécateurs kwamen tot rust op 26 september. 3500 kisten 2013 Dominus werden gebotteld in juli 2015 en de wijn werd vrijgegeven in december 2016. Een grandioze Dominus...

100 Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate Issue #221 - robertparker.com (Oktober 2015) - The 2013 Dominus is, to my way of thinking, one of the most profound wines Christian Moueix has yet made in his rather brilliant winemaking history, both in France and in Napa Valley. This wine, with very low yields of only 3,500 cases and a final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, offers up notes of cedar wood, forest floor, loamy soil and oodles of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. Very opaque purple in color, super-pure and intense, this wine has low acidity, but ripe, noticeable tannins. This is a 30- to 40-year wine and a profound effort from this famous vineyard in Yountville. Drink it over the next 40+ years. Drink 2015-2055.

Christian Moueix has probably had his two greatest back-to-back vintages to date with the 2012 and 2013. The 2012s, which are just being released, include the unbelievable Dominus, made of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and coming in at 14.3% natural alcohol. I said last year that it reminded me somewhat of the 1991 and the 1994, which are both still very strong efforts and, while fully mature, showed no signs of decline if well-stored.

Fashioned from tiny berries (the smallest Christian Moueix had seen from this vineyard), it possesses a velvety richness and seamlessness as well as profound notes of blueberries, blackberries and crème de cassis intermixed with hints of espresso bean, forest floor and high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco. Full-bodied and opulent as well as exceptionally elegant and pure, fans of this estate will adore this sensational Dominus. Moreover, it should evolve for 25-30 or more years. Drink 2014-2044.

The California outpost of Pomerol and St.-Emilion’s famed proprietor, Christian Moueix has been working at this iconic vineyard, Yountville’s Napanook, for over twenty years. Many decades ago this was the origin of some of the great Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons. The 2012 and 2013 vintages were two of the greatest for Christian Moueix at Dominus in his long and distinguished career. Think of these as more modern day versions of the 1991 and 1994, two extraordinary early vintages at Dominus. Christian Moueix considers 2013 to be the greatest vintage of his illustrious career. Production was tiny for this estate, with only 2,000 cases of the 2013 Napanook produced and 3,500 cases of Dominus. The harvest was extremely early, beginning on September 10 and finishing on September 26. Analytically, the 2013s have the highest levels of extract and tannins ever measured at this estate. Fermentations were easy, and lasted three weeks.

Dominus

De architecten van het befaamde Tate Modern in London en het Olympisch stadion in Beijing, Jacques Herzog en Pierre de Meuron, hadden eerder al het indrukwekkende Dominus Estate gebouwd in Yountville, Napa Valley. De kwaliteit van de geproduceerde wijnen overtreft de nochtans zo grote lof aan dit toonbeeld van hedendaagse architectuur. De bouwheer, Christian Moueix, vertaalt het minimalisme in zijn werkwijze; los van al te modieuze stijlvereisten moet de wijn de essentiële kwaliteit van het fruit weergeven. Dominus is een opvallend karaktervolle en krachtige bewaarwijn. Hij onderscheidt zich door een harmonieus evenwicht tussen finesse, levendig fruit en subtiele tannine.

Christian Moueix richtte Dominus Estate op in Yountville in 1981. De befaamde wijngaard Napanook leverde reeds grote Cabernet Sauvignon sinds de jaren 1940 en 1950 en is de bakermat van de huidige Napa Valley. In 1838 plantte George Yount (vandaar de naam Yountville) er de eerste wijnstokken van de streek.

Moueix

Christian Moueix is net zoals zijn legendarische vader, Jean-Pierre Moueix, vereenzelvigd met Pomerol. Na zijn studies aan UC Davis eind de jaren 1960, vervoegde hij de Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix waarvan hij de leiding nam. Zijn zoon Edouard staat nu aan zijn zijde. Hij bestuurt een indrukwekkend imperium dat ondermeer La Fleur Pétrus, Trotanoy en Hosanna omvat in Pomerol, Bélair Monange in Saint Emilion en Dominus in Napa Valley. In 2008 werd hij “Decanter Man of the Year”.
